Batteries are much cheaper in Costco…

    • How much cheaper? Example?

      • As far as I remember, the battery for Kluger is around $150.

      • I paid $80 at costco (when they had their 25% off exide batteries deal), when at SCA at 30% off century batteries it would be $140 for my car.

      • Picked up a Exide X55D23CMF (Red Top) for ~$109.

  • This is probably a silly question, but I know nothing about cars.
Should I go for a Century or bosch car battery?

Edit: or Costco as stated above being much cheaper?

      Optima last much longer.

      • That price though…

      • Are they still good though?
I have one of the newish ‘Made in Mexico’ yellow tops and am skeptical how long it will last me

        • Got receipt and warranty? Don't worry…

Mexico has been making car parts for decades for the US. I wouldn't be too concerned.

  • I’m feeling the lash of those Century Battery prices.

Century batteries have a very good reputation and are generally reliable. They also tend to have a longer warranty than the cheaper brands, but you'll be paying more for them.

Having said that, 2 weeks ago I was going to head into SCA get an to SCA brand battery, because I didn't want to pay $50 more for a Century. On the way I decided to stop at a local tyre shop and ask on the off chance they sold batteries. Turns out they did. They only sold Century and what I was after was only $10 more than and SCA branded one. Bought it on the spot because everywhere else sold the exact same thing for $40-50 more. That was their normal price too apparently

So ask your local tyre shop or mechanic too

  • how long can you store a battery ? I believe shops don't sell battery's older than 3 months, but that must be over-precautious

I got a Century battery sitting in an eski in the garage. Bought it in November, my car sometimes misfires, but most of the times it's fine, so I don't want to replace the existing one yet…

    • You can keep large lead-acid batteries indefinitely, as long as you keep them charged.

Older telephone exchange buildings have lead-acid batteries, so the old (non-NBN) phone system keeps working through power outages. They often have diesel generator backup too, for extended outages. I have heard that many of those batteries are 50+ years old.

I have a stand-alone solar power system at my house that uses two car-size lead-acid batteries to store the power. Has been running continuously since 2012, supplying power for all that time, and the batteries are still good.

For your battery in an Esky, I recommend you set a repeating alert in Google calendar or similar, to remind you to charge the battery every three months.
