Should update title to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) which is generally considered better than Mitsubishi Electric.

I've had several MHI units (SRK50ZIX) for a few years now, still happy with the choice.

    • +1

I fully concur with ghostknife - MHI has a better reputation than Mitsubishi when it comes to manufacturing air conditioning systems.

    • I heard it’s the other way around? Parts for MHI are a lot more expensive.

    • -2

Funny that, everything I've read has been the opposite. MHI parts are expensive and generally the units are of lower quality. MHI are more for the domestic market and have nicer designs whereas ME are more of a workhorse.

        It's the opposite.

Mitsubishi Electric offers a Signature Series, but these nice design features come at a price. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries seems to have more of a no-nonsense approach to air conditioning with a narrower range of prices.

        • Ah, I stand corrected about the nicer designs. I remembered the nice coloured models to be MHI.

      • The guy that installed our 7kw MHI said that they are the one to go for. He gave them a good wrap.
It has been a great unit. Got it from Bunnings.

  • Only 2.5 star enery rating for cooling. Is that a problem ?

    • You'll always run into lower energy ratings for higher kW. Generally I'd say 2.5 is pretty good for anything over 5kW, but really if you care about energy efficiency – and IMHO you should :) – just make sure you get the smallest unit that will serve your needs.

Good luck getting Bunnings to do their price match gimmick.
They will probably say it’s not identical as their model comes with bonus AA batteries for the remote.

  • It's a shame that installation is almost as much as the product.

    • +1

Yes and no - buy a quality product like this one and it'll easily run for 10 years or more.

      • yeap… but more referring to the install cost.
No issue with the cost of the unit.

        • Yeah it is a bit of a sting. When I bought my Fujitsu recently I had about 4 quotes from installers. It was surprising the variation in quotes given, especially when they were offering the same thing - ie wall mounted, separate circuit, etc.

          • @placard: How much did the quotes vary from the max and min?

            • @RocketSwitch: I had amounts from $680 to $900.

In the end went for one high $700s - middle of the road, and just got a good feel from the guy when he came to quote. ie one of the cheapest ones, the guy's attention to hygiene was lacking, might be silly of me, but made me wonder what his workmanship is like.

In the end got a very neat and tidy job, am happy. You don't want to skimp too much on install, if they do a bad job, it can affect the performance of the A/C.

              • @placard: Thanks for the info, and you're right. I would gladly pay more for the job you got done. It's rare to find. Keep the number!!

    • Anyone tried using a platform such as airtasker to get competitive rates on air conditioner installs? I feel like I would be comfortable choosing a cheaper quote if they had a strong positive rating in a reputation management system (ala eBay).

  • Decent price but too big for me. My bedroom 3.5 KW split just died so need to replace with something of similar capacity

      $917 + $50 card
I'm looking for the same thing and that seems to be the cheapest 3.5kW split around (that is a decent brand).

      • Ive seen Kelvinators for $700 odd. Might wait for an ebay 20% off promo at bing lee or good guys

        • +1

They're not as good/reputable as they once were. But would probably be fine for a small room.

Just bought a 7 kw Rinnai unit from Good guys for $1033 (is on sale for $1089 but they did better when asked). HN have for $1089 atm too. Its 3 star…

    • I've been eyeing off this unit too. Looks like good kw/$.

    • It also has the same R32 refrigerant, too.

    • Hi MadKaw,

Whats your review on the Rinnai 7.0kW unit, assuming you've got it installed and operational.

      Thanks in advance.

      • Getting installed on Monday so can't comment atm. Been told they are a good unit, 5 year warranty and the 3 stars sealed it, most others are 2 - 2.5..

  • In a different league I'm sure. But Aldi have splits for $299 at the moment. Not sure what gas they use. I hear the gas can be more than the units themselves?

  • Anyone able to recommend an installer in Sydney? So far I haven't found one that would install a unit not bought through them.

    • Where abouts,? I'm in the Hawkesbury, quotes range from $450 to $600. Mine is a replacement not a new install.

  • Any deals for 2.5kw?

  • Pulled the trigger on the 8Kw and 5Kw system, price beat by 10% with TED successfully. The 5Kw they had in store, floor stock, the 8Kw was a special order. Amazing price really, seeing as TED's were already discounted considerably. OzBargain, you are why I love the internet. And of course, all you lot. Thanks for the post Ballajura! Happy days.

    • I am happy that people still benefit from this post.
