    This is truly tablet week!

    • This tab has been out since end of last year. It was a good buy back then, now, not so much.

      • come on tegra 2? Dual Core!

Stumo you don't like iPad either do you then?
Which tablet are you waiting for for? All new ones are also oming out with Tegra to AFAIK

        • +1

CPU is fine, its the crap screen and crap screen res mainly, followed by low ram.

Asus transformer is my 10" pick, but there seems to be some controversy about pricing now. It was supposedly $399 usd.

        • Yeah Transformer is the boss right now..I'm leaning towards Flyer(7")(as a student)

1024 x 600 res is alright(better than the phones out right now) Viewing angles factor is as much as the Rez.
512MB is ok-ok but yes not enough for a tablet.

But I see what you're getting at and considering other tablets in the same price range, I would rather get the Galaxy tab or iPad.

    No 3G and GPS?

    • No there isn't, but I've never seen these as essential. To me (especially in Australia) a 3G tablet seems rather pointless given you can only get decent data on a plan and I already pay enough for my phone plan and data on that. I couldn't ever double up and would rather just tether to phone.

GPS is a different issue, but once again I've got a dedicated device for that… so I'd never use it. I believe you can use phones as GPS between android devices now?

I know its the Apple excuse ("I'd never use it"), but here I think its acceptable enough.

      • +1

There's also an app to tether your tablet to your phone and use it's GPS:

A tablet without 3G is about as useful as a pen and paper.

There are decent data rates available if you look. I pay 10 cents per MB pre-paid with Crazy Johns (Ok, yes it via is Vodafone which frequently results in the my tablet being as useful a pen and paper)

        • 10c per MB?? I pay $1 for 200MB(TPG)

  • Very interesting offer.

So what on earth determines what will and won't ship internationally? Also any idea about warranties, given Viewsonic is fairly big over here. That Engadget article also says its $280 on Amazon… is that a different product?

EDIT: It's also only $297 AUD if you change the currency to USD and let your bank convert it (I've got one of those zero foreign transaction fee accounts). So it makes it less than a Galaxy Tab!

    • thought amazon doesnt ship electronic devices to australia? thought they only shipped dvds/books?

      • I think they changed their policies now.

      • -1

        Kindle shipped within 5 days!

      • Some stuff ships to Australia, some stuff doesn't >.<

  • get a galaxy tab from Telstra for $299!

    • This one is a much better device physically. It's 10 inch (as opposed to 7), much faster and you don't have to give any of your money to Tel$tra (Do have to give them credit for their competitiveness on this one though).

It's been said in pretty much every review that the touch interface and the Adnroid customisations on the Viewsonic are friggin' awful though. I think it's a resisitive screen too.

It'd be better as, say, a video entertainment tab.

I think the Galaxy would be better as an app/internet/work/phone/GPS tab.

        • +3

The Amazon website saids its "crisp and vibrant 10.1-inch capacitive touch screen display" so I don't think it is resistive.

        • My bad. Capacitive screen it is. I probably should have checked.

        • Okay, first of all… there is absolutely nothing wrong with resistive: In fact it is a superior technology. It's just their is bad Chinese resistive screens… same as there is bad capacitive screens. My N900 is resistive and thanks to being able to that it's actually useful as I can use a stylus/pen/banana's to touch it makes it FAR more accurate.

          That said…. it's capacitive.

Your also probably reading reviews for when the device was released. Viewsonic released an update in December which enables you to be able to use a more default Android launcher… which solves basically all the software issues.

This tablet basically wins in everything except 3G and GPS spec wise.

Why all the neg votes on this dude for this comment? Nothing at all wrong with this comment.

        • +1

I'm starting to think their are as many Samsung fanboys as their is Apple. Hell I somehow became a ended up owning a bunch of Samsung devices without even knowing (Printer, monitor, TV, laptop).

        • +1

That's how it goes with OzB nowadays, you express an opinion that differs from the mob; irrespective of how reasonable it may be; and you get negged!

Half the time the idiots doing it don't comprehend the point or even properly read the comment, they just see what they wanna see. The disadvantages of anon negs on comments! :p

Hell, I just got negged in another thread for thanking the OP for the heads-up on a deal! You've gotta laugh sometimes, just ignore it, when it comes to comments my advice is just say your piece & move on! ;)

        • +1

Because the general public as a whole have proven time and time again they have NFI.

I have seen awesome informative posts and comments battered and negged just because people dont understand. And then you get people with nothing better to do than follow you around and neg your comments no matter what you say or do- I find it amusing!

Ignore them and carry on is what I say…..

        • +1

unfortunately, people vote for different reasons, which means at the end of the day it's really just a popularity contest, so i just say what i want to say and don't bother if i get negged, once you start 'pandering' or pulling punches i think you've missed the whole point of OZbargain

great price for dual cpu and can overclock to 1.4ghz but screen resoluton is poor.

    • Screen viewing angles are rubbish too.

    • Resolution is 120 dpi - Is that so shabby?

  • +1

Apart from the screen size, here are some cons & pros compared to galaxy tab:

    Cons:
Same resolution but on a bigger screen
    Poor viewing angles
    Heavier
    No 3g
    No gps
Terrible out-of-box experience (will fly if you flash a custom rom though)
Doesn't play high profile h264 files. (forget about chucking all those mp4 & mkv files without converting)

    Pros:
Faster tegra 2 chip (and the cheapest one you can find)
    Alot of developer support

It's up to you folks to decide for yourself :)

    • -2

already answered . must learn to read ahead .

  • Does the custom Rom supports mkv?

    • +1

Custom roms won't make a difference. Hardware acceleration is needed to playback 720p & 1080p h264 files at acceptable framerates.

The hardware acceleration of the tegra 2 is very restricted; i.e. it doesn't support all h264 files (high profile). So some of your mkv files might play, but i'd say most won't.

EDIT: Here's the relevant xda developers thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=968640

Hahaha anyone who buys this rubbish will wish they just bought an out of the box fully functional Ipad

      Neg all you want losers…..

    • -3

Of course strand would have a personal attack on an apple user… every second post is anti apple and pro android. Get over it, Apple has won the war 2 years ago (And I dont even like apple, but its better than these rubbish gimmick devices that they cant even give away)

  • cyanogen 7 is available for this tab. also yesterday someone at XDA oveclocked it to 1.6Ghz! its now a DEV supported device… ive heard of the viewing angle thing but I've not seen it personally. at that price its for consideration if you can get them to deliver. - trouble is you need an ipad too. if i could walk nto JB and get it at that price I would.

    • Why do you need an ipad too?

  • Oh the deal is SO HOT, it's making the tablet melt at 101 degrees *celcius. XD

    • Come on people, it was a satirical joke. Be happy!

  • oh dear, not another Tab deal.. so many gadgets and so little money.

  • +1

I JUST BOUGHT IT! After reading countless reviews and the PROS if flashing it with a better rom.
First time I bought anything from Amazon, also the 1st time I got a Tablet….
    Better be good… can't wait.

    • I think this G-Tablet is better value than the Galaxy Tab.

    • .

  • When I have seen it for the first time here: http://www.woot.com/Forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=4394837
I was like 'wow, I want it in OZ for similar price' but I havent realised that is has no 3G. Maybe with Ideos and this app http://www.appbrain.com/app/tethergps/com.comptonsoft.tgps it could work fine, but that is extra effort to have both of them together and recharged. Very good but I need to think about it.

  • if they had this in a 7 or 8 inch this would be a great tablet but a worry for me is if it'll be any good under direct sunlight.

  • I was almost hyperventilating at this deal. My early Xmas album for myself. Was praying Viewsonic would bring this model to Australia. Can't wait for it to arrive. Hope Google release the source code for Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich by mid year.

    • Why wait? U can get it via Amazon like us. If you were to flash the ROM, warranty would be void anyways. I doubt this would come to Australia, seems to me that they are clearing stocks.

      • You can always flash original rom back, and still get warranty. So warranty is important.

        • Very hard to flash back to the original rom if it's dead.

        • RedDogInCan. Android ROM flashing is a bit different to say flashing firmware on a DVD writer or a router.

Normally, you (1) backup your current ROM onto a SD card and (2) you need flash the ROM from the recovery console.

However, so far, based on my experience (limited), the custom ROMs tend to be less stable than the stock ROM. They do over better features.

      • I did ordered it yesterday. Got an email to notify me that it has been shipped. Looks like I'm going with Vegan rom. Looks really impressive. It might be a little less fun now having to keep both my phone and this table up to date.

  • even you can tether, you'll still need a gps program with offline map;
    tether gps means you'll use bith device's battery;
so i'd rather use the gps on my phone directly for the gps part
