@EnforcerOfJustice: Thanks greatly EOJ for that reply. I'm in a similar situation so I might give it a crack just in case. Cheers :)

              • @Fexofenadine: Please let me know if you make any progress! If it helps with the troubleshooting process I attempted this in Firefox with my Platinum Edge, which is my only Amex card

If I tap using Amex card and wife taps using her iPhone wallet (same Amex card), would I get double cash back? I believe both taps (device and card) would be considered as separate so should get double cash back.

    • very good point.

    • I am curious to know as well..

    • Update: It worked :) got two emails, one for each tap (device/card).

      • Thanks for letting us know. Can I know if the travel can be concurrent or need to be one after the other ?

Does it have the Opal Transfer Discount?

Adult Opal card holders get a $2 discount for every transfer between modes (train, ferry, bus or light rail) as part of one journey within 60 minutes from the last tap off.

Child/Youth, Gold Senior/Pensioner and Concession Opal card holders get a $1 discount for every transfer between modes.

Once you reach the Weekly Travel Reward of half-price travel, the Opal Transfer Discount is also reduced by 50%.

Note that the Opal Transfer Discount doesn’t apply when transferring between light rail and Sydney Ferries.

Does it have the Opal Transfer Discount(opal.com.au)?

      Unfortunately not (not yet?)

Opal benefits such as Weekly Travel Rewards, Transfer Discounts, off-peak train fares, Opal Trip Advantage and free access to Park&Ride carparks are not available with contactless payments.
      https://transportnsw.info/contactless

    • +2

      No

Each contactless payment is valid for one unbroken trip on one mode of transport. If you tap off and transfer to another service or mode of transport you are starting a new trip, which you will be charged separately for. Transport for NSW does not offer contactless payments on any bus, coach or private ferry service.

  • Then probably not a deal for me. But thanks anyway.

  • If I use Apple Pay from my watch or phone, can the transit officer check my transaction when they're doing their random ticket checks?

    • Yes (so make sure you present the same device/card you used - if you tapped on with your watch, don't present your phone or plastic card, present your watch)

      • +2

What happens if your phone battery goes flat halfway through your journey?

        • +1

how would you tap out when you exit then?

Depending of your luck, you might get away with a default fare or a fine (at the descretion of the transit officer)?!

    • +1

i used my amex card and was checked by a transit officer

he wasn't able to read my card on the reader so gave me a little card that talks about paying for fares (or something like that - can't remember as i didn't bother reading it and threw it out).

told me to make sure i tap off and then left it at that.

      • You should make a complaint. They can't have a system where they start accusing and threatening law abiding passengers that have done everything that they've us to do.

  • Your Card or device can only be used to pay for one fare per trip, and the fare your Card will be charged is the same as a standard peak Adult Opal fare for the same trip. Opal daily, weekly and Sunday travel caps are also applied, however other Opal benefits (including, but not limited to, off-peak train fare discounts and weekly travel rewards) are not available with contactless payments.

Does it mean they will always charge full fare even if you are eligible for discount fare in off-peak hours? Too bad if true.

The up to $25 cashback kills it for me. If this was ongoing (and worked on buses) I'd sign up to AMEX.

  • I tapped on and off using Amex card last night and looks like it only charged me $1 instead of the $4.x ? Anyone else in the same boat, transaction is still under pending tho.

    • -1

$1 wow. You should post it as a deal

      😉😯😯

      • Sorry for the incorrect info, didnt know about the authorisation …

    • +2

      it's a pending authorisation

    • +2

Credit cards have 2 ways to Bill.

One is what we normally see - use the card, it appears on our statement.

The other is an authorisation which can be used in two ways. A hotel will obtain an authorisation at check in for a certain amount, say $1000. The credit company authorises the transaction and reduces the credit limit by that amount, but the customer is not yet billed. They later charge on the authorisation the actual amount, e.g. Final accommodation and room charges. This can also be used to test the card works with a $1 authorisation for example, the bill is put through later and the original authorisation lapses.

I don't know how they are doing it with Opal, but the $1 you are seeing is possibly only an authorisation and the bill will appear later or separately.

    • Same, except I got 2 $1.00 transactions. Not sure why it would come up twice.. once for tap on and once for tap off?

      • should be only 1. You sure didn't tap off using difference card/device?

        • Nope, only a lowly Ozbargainer with one Amex card! So can't get them mixed up

      • Yes there would be a $1 pre-auth for every trip

      • May I please ask whether you got charged for two trips in this case? Happened to me tonight (I used my phone to tap on and tap off); been using it for about a week and a half with no problems until now.

        • +1

Sorry, only just saw this. Took a few days, but both $1 debits ended up being one single trip debit and the Amex credit. So it did work out. Should be the same for you now I reckon

          • @aragornelessar: One trip has been finalised with credit applied, but the second $1 charge is still at pending …

Transit officers need more training in regards to mobile wallets being used; I had my ticket checked twice while this was running and both were baffled at first when I presented my phone in lieu of my Opal card or credit card …

            • +1

@kerfuffle: Mate, took them long enough just to get customer service training not to act thug-like!

  • Didn't get it on my Westpack Black Amex nor Platinum CHarge. Oh well

    • i got it on my Westpack Black Amex

  • I used this on my Amex yesterday on the way home. Tapped on and off fine. Went to use it again today on the way home and my card wouldn't tap on. Had to use my Opal card instead and pay full price. This happen to anyone else?
