  • christmas 2019?

    • Erk! Thanks, I've just updated that :)

We're located in Albury, so the postage times to regional NSW / VIC is usually <4 days with slightly faster times to Melb / Syd. Qld is usually at the 4-5 day mark.

The price to the link shows $349 with the 20% off applied coming to $279.
At that price i would go for the Merlin MT100EVO (available also from the same store).
It has a piece belt rail rather than a 3 piece belt rail so i figured it would be a little more sturdy and easier to mount.
I installed my merlin myself about 2 years ago and i took my time and it took about half a day.
    Couldnt be happier.

Hi mate, the issue with the Merlin openers is that Merlin doesn't like them being self-installed. You might notice on their website this fun little notice. Warranty with Merlin also requires the powerhead to be sent back to them so they can inspect and repair the unit which can take up to several weeks. Speaking from experience, several weeks is a generous estimate when speaking about warranty times with the major manufacturers.

With this particular unit, we get a lot more power over the warranty ourselves and can send a replacement powerhead to you directly. This means you'll only be without a door for the postage time of a new unit.

In regards to the knockdown rail (3-piece rail), the oldest unit I directly dealt with that had one was the MT800 from Merlin. I have vivid memories of taping the rail to the top of the boxes in the factory here! I've never actually heard of a knock-down rail failing, but I have heard about courier drivers bending the one piece rails we send :(

      • +1

Still comes up as $279.20 not $239.20 as title shows.

        • Gotcha! Should be ok now :)

      • I just remember when my old unit was on the way out i was looking through the openers in the bin at a local garage door installer place. Always saw what seemed like relativity new no name (similar to this one) units in the bin. Never did i see a merlin in there. So at almost the same price i would rather a merlin.
I also kept in mind that the merlin for the DIYer comes with a much smaller warranty (where as the Chamberlain which is the same unit sold at bunnings comes with a 5 year warranty) comes with a 5 year warranty. Also if you read the warranty details it must be serviced by a professional, or else you dont get 7 years either.
If you actually read the warranty details on this unit its only 2 years with back to base also.. From the manafactures website -

'Auto Openers™ offers a 2 year standard back to base warranty, covering you from manufacturer fault. Depending on budget warranty can be extended to either a 3 year or 5 Year Return/Replace warranty.'

Auto Openers has been out for about 3-4 years, if I recall correctly. You're also absolutely correct, the new no-name brands are almost always trash. We've been on eBay for almost 12 years and our local area for around 25 years. I've seen every possible version of Chinese special, whether that be the Happy Song Dragon Brand, or more recently, a "DingDing" gate controller board.

We make a point of only selling products we think are reliable. This usually means a revolving door of openers and remotes on our relatives and friends doors, as well as in house stress testing. For example, when the GDO6 was first released we put it on our factory door (20m²+) that was over the size rating (16.5m²) in order to know what happens when they fail, what the lead up to that looks like, etc. After the first year, we decided to not service it in order to speed up the process of it failing.

That was 15 years ago. It still lives on, lifting a door that hasn't been serviced in 15 years that nearly 5m² over its size rating. That's actually the unit the Roller Opener is based upon, also made by Auto Openers. I can get you a photo if you'd like :)

There's no point us plugging a motor to have a horde of grumpy folks on our backs when they bite the dust, all over a quick cash grab. One of the main reasons we recommend this unit over any other is the warranty. It sucks for you when a motor fails, but it's pretty awful for us trying to poke and prod manufacturers to speed up the process as well. The longest warranty repair I had was nearly 3 months and that was just last year!

As for the warranty itself, that might have been on their older units. I've just grabbed a brochure and it's definitely got 5 years on this one.

Let me know if you have any other concerns mate, I'd love to address them for you! :)

  • Any deals on roller door openers? Thanks

    • Hey mate, we have the Roller Opener by Auto Openers up for $239.20 delivered. I'm planning on posting this one tomorrow! It'll do doors up to 16.5m² and also has three remote controls. As for installation, you can either arrange for professional installation or DIY it. Depending on your location I can recommend a company I know.

The Roller Opener remotes will also work on the Panel Opener, so if you need to update multiple motors that's a bonus :)

      • Just a couple of q's:
Would that roller opener be suitable for outdoor use (a roller door that is at the back fence of a property, not in a garage)?

And would that company you recommend for installation be able to do the electrical work required to get power to the back fence?

        Cheers

        • Hey mate, the units not rated for weather resistance at all. If you were to install it outside, you'd want a pretty nifty alcove that would prevent water from hitting the unit at all, as the warranty does not cover failure due to water damage. You could look at a GDO8 by ATA - It's a little underpowered at a size rating of 15m² but it'll handle the job.

As for the electrical work, I'm sure we could sort something out mate. What's the rough area you're looking for an installer? Normally if they are unable to get the work done, they know a reliable sparky due to doing enough jobs with them over the years.

Don't need an opener myself but you get a +1 for being active and helpful in the comments.

    • +2

      Cheers! :D

I'll be around all day (more than likely tomorrow as well) answering garage-y questions.

  • I bought the wrong garage door sealer from you guys (right rail shape, just not wide enough to cover gaps when the door is closed), I needed B&D Garage Roller Door WeatherSeal SERIES 2 Industrial Style Seal. One of your consultants said you don't stock/unable to order that one… is that right?

    I bought 5.5m, I cant return 3m left can I xD

    • +2

G'Day RtN, I've just checked with my team and whilst it's not something we normally stock, I've sent a few guys out to see if they can find anything in the factory.

As for the return, I'll see what I can do. Chuck me a PM and we'll start getting this organized!

      • +3

        LOOK AT THIS SERVICE!

  • OP, any installation videos of products that are similar to yours? I'm not that great a handyman, so it would be nice to see the scope of the job.

    • +2

How about a video for the Panel Opener itself? :)

Let me know if you need anything else!

  • Which installer would you recommend in the Perth metro area?

    • +1

Try Andy from A-Remote Garage Doors on 0422 763 343. He's based just outside Perth but he's confirmed for me that he does do Perth Metro!
Just let him know that National Garage has referred you on and he'll look after you.

      • Thanks
Do you have any remotes which is compatible with my Merlin M802?
        How much is it shipped?
I am looking at 3 units.

        • +1

Hey mate, we have the M802 remote control itself! You're up for $34.40 per remote with the POOLTIME code. It'll come with free tracking if you're getting three as well :)

We used to stock aftermarket remotes for the M802, but we had a lot of issues with the case cracking when opened by customers. We tried a new case for the unit but started having issues with dead on arrival boards in the remotes. This is the same case that a lot of sellers on eBay have at the moment.

A helpful local rep for an Aussie company with competitive pricing. Take my +

    • +1

Thanks for the + mate! Whilst we're 100% in Australia, I wouldn't mind being somewhere more chilly and less heatwave-y about now…

had to log on to + the seller, very nice to see the level of commitment. takes a lot of love!

  • I've been meaning to get an opener for my garage door. Place was built in '93, single panel lift door. Trouble is the other units I have tried didn't install well as the garage ceiling and roof beams are too low. Is this unit suitable for this sort of scenario? Thanks

    • Hey mate! On paper it sounds like it'll work. The single piece doors need a little grunt to lift, which is what this unit can provide. However, the low roof and beams might be an issue.

When the door is open, can you measure the space between the door and the ceiling? If you can measure around the 3-3.2m mark back from the door, that'll be where the opener sits. The Panel Opener's rail is pretty small and only needs 57mm (60mm to be safe) of headroom to be installed.

      • Thanks! I'll measure it up when I get home tonight. The door is this type and not in the best of conditions: http://www.novaindustries.com.au/instructions/garage-doors/B…

There is sufficient space between the top of the door when fully open and the tin roof but the old wooden joists (I incorrectly called them beams earlier) are in the way. The first joist is almost directly behind the fully open door, and the bottom of the joist sits lower than the door. Short of doing something similar to this (http://www.ashireporter.org/photos/thumbnails/2014_03/Garage…) I'm not sure what options I have.

        • Maybe take a few photos as well mate and shoot them through to me - I'll have a chat with the installers here and I'll see what they come up with. There's all sorted of solutions, it's just what works the best. The location of that beam might make this a job for a garage door dealer to possibly install the unit suspended from the ceiling on perforated angle, for example.

  • I am interested about the B&D Smart Phone Control Kit. My Garage has B&D Roller Door Opener CAD PD Diamond (Model RDO 1 V4 PD). If possible could you please let me know whether it is compatible with smartphone kit or not?
Also, if compatible could I install the kit (DIY)?

    Thanks

    • +1

Hey Enayet, the B&D smartphone control kit is compatible with any Series 2 ATA motor, and any B&D motor sold after October, 2016. I've had a hunt around to confirm this (hence the delayed reply) but it looks like the RDO1v3 was PRE Smartphone and the RDO1v3 is POST smartphone :)

You should be ok to get the kit!

      • Thanks. Is there any video available for DIY?

        • I believe that the instruction manual with the Smartphone kit has a few QR codes on it, that take you through to unlisted YouTube videos :)

          • @GrecDeFreckle: Thanks, OP. I brought one.

            • @enayet: Great to hear! It'll be going out today for you mate. If you pm me your name, I'll find you in the system and let you know the tracking number when we generate it this afternoon :)

  • Hi,

Do you sell automatic garage door openers for garage carriage doors?

    • Hi mate, short answer: no. We don't stock a unit designed for those doors at all.

The team and I had a chat about the possibility of mounting a gate opener to the door, which would be largely dependant on having the side room available due to the sideways mounting of the opener. There would also be a risk of damaging the opener on windy days, however, as the garage doors are solid (Compared to the holes in a gate). If wind catches the door, it would cause internal strain to the unit with the possibility of warping the arms or shattering the sprocket.

I'm going to get a guy here to chase up a manufacturer to see if can work something out! We should have an answer (hopefully) by tomorrow. If you're willing, PM me your number and we'll be able to sort this out!

  • Thanks OP. I brought one. Hopefully I can DIY and replace my old GliermaticGTS with this new one. But just in case I run into trouble and have to give up and need someone to help me to install it. Do you have anyone you can suggest? I live in the Ryde area in Sydney.
