Cheap-ish flights to Seoul during the Easter Break. Easter holidays this year are aligned well with an ANZAC day holiday coming up as well.
There are some good China Eastern fares available via SkyScanner search with 3 to 4 hour layovers which is a lot better than 30 hour layovers on cheap flights generally. China Eastern allows 2 x 23kg pieces of checked baggage for Economy passengers.

Sample search:
Departing 19 Apr 2019 (Good Friday) from SYD to ICN (Seoul) via PVG (Shanghai Pu Dong) [Layover 3hrs 50mins]
Returning 27 Apr 2019 (Saturday) from ICN (Seoul) to SYD via PVG (Shanghai Pu Dong) [Layover 3hrs 45mins]
Fare: $643 onwards (depending on whichever company you choose to book with)

There are cheaper fares available if you played around with the dates and wanted a few more days of holiday. Although, layover times might get longer which might give you an opportunity to potentially explore Shanghai for a day!

PS: Direct flights from SYD to ICN return range from $1100-$1400 with Asiana generally being the cheaper of the two airlines that fly direct Sydney to Seoul during the Easter break dates.

PPS: Fares available/true at the time of posting

  • This is a great price for going to Seoul.

    • Cheers! I thought it was good as return to Shanghai would generally cost that much. So the Shanghai to Seoul leg is almost for free; especially during the easter holiday dates.

      • Never flown China Eastern as we always fly Korean Air but the 2x 23kg is certainly very appealing for our next trip.

        • Reviews are mixed about China Eastern and you wouldn't expect Korean Air standards when paying about half the cost :) But in saying that, it is not a budget airline and is a member of the Sky Team alliance

    This is Seoul good

I plan to do some Seoul searching there; and soju; and kimchi

  • I have a trip to Korea & Japan in May - June, Qantas + JAL came out to $910 PP.

    • Not school holidays

    • Have you checked how much it would cost to cancel it?

  • Need to find a deal for pollution masks :D

    • made in china

  • Anyone know if you are able to check-through bags for this flight? Previous experience is that flights via Shanghai require you to collect your luggage and recheck it in at the airport which is a massive pain…

Never flown with them myself yet. But I found this on their US website. If you type PVG select Shanghai and then click inquire, it shows you in what scenarios you are required to re-check in baggage at Shanghai:

  • Oh God China Eastern airline and Shanghai Pu Dong are just terrible…

Flew with them recently on my return from Canada…

China Eastern Airlines, struggle to select seats online, calling them took ages so I gave up, ended up booking seats after talking to them via Facebook. Gave me shitty seats but lucked out and managed to select better seats at the airport checking in. Their check in staff at PVG are just rude, checking their phones and chatting online while serving us.
After walking through the gate, hopped on bus to board plane. Plane was cramped and looked like it was from the 90s.

Shanghai Pu Dong airport, most stressful airport experience of my life. Luckily I had 4 hours before transit as it took me 2.5 hours to go through customs to get a temporary visa, get my luggage, recheck in my luggage, walk to other terminal, go through pre security, then actual security.
Noone there seems to speak any English for some reason, strange given it's an international airport.
Was chatting to a couple behind me and the wife had a moon boot, was forced to walk everywhere, despite asking multiple airport staff for a wheelchair.

Buyer beware. Cheap flights but shitty flight and airport experience.

Again, with that much of air pollution, why would anyone want to visit Korea or anywhere near Beijing.

That's a funny perspective! One could say, why visit AU with so much UV radiation or why visit US when there are so many guns; any random person would have a gun and can shoot you.
I guess you're only there for a short travel, so it's not a big deal. You'd still take precautions of course but it is not something that would stop me from exploring a new country/culture/food.
