Saw these in for 10 bucks the other day and just knew there was no way they'd stay that price. Nice packaging too but no idea on taste. Will definitely grab these to try

Ten dollars?! Tell 'em they're dreaming.

1L gelato tub varieties are about this much without sale

    • +10

Where ya getting a litre of gelato for $5 not on sale? Nonsense.

      • -5

        woolies sells regular gelato

    • +8

I can see why Messina is popular. With hipster locations in Surry Hills, Darlinghurst and Bondi - It was more often than not, the desert before the real desert on a Saturday night when I was dating a few years ago…..if ya know what I mean ;)

      • +33

        Name checks out

        • +5

          Want a salted caramel gelato?

      • +1

I think I know what you mean, 'desert' wise. More camels than people.

        • +1

Nothing like a nice hump after gelato Messina ;)

      • +11

Your way with words obviously made her as dry as the Sahara 🌵

        • savage.

        • possibility…i guess we'll just take it one hump at a time….

      • +1

You mean you had Messina then went home and had OzBargain's favourite dessert an M&Ms block of chocolate?

Wow what a lucky person you were!

  • +2

Vanilla and peanut one might be worth a look in at $5, but $10 for drumsticks not happening pete.

  • New meta ice-cream?

  • +12

    Murray River Salted Coconut sorbet

I lived near the Murray for 20 odd years in SA, I have NO CLUE why you'd want anything out of that in your food.

    • +2

I wonder what they would say if you complained it tasted like yarra river salt instead of nurray3 river salt

      • They would say, want some salt with it?

      • +8

You can't get yarra river salt anymore, too contaminated by OBikes.

      • +2

Has anyone lived long enough to describe the taste of Yarra River salt?

    • What about Brisbane River Salt Caramel Sorbet? Doesn't that sound great?

It's interesting how they come up with these titles, when we see it, they knew someone would try it and then they cut the lines.

      • +1

Parramatta River Salty Foot gelato. Nom nom.

      • Indian Ocean salt?

    • +1

Who doesn't love the aroma of millions of rotting fish in their icecreams?

    • Maybe it's the runoff from cotton growing?

    • A region known for it's coconuts.

  • +3

Been wanting to check these out. The packaging doesn't even have a photo of what the ice cream looks like so you're going in blind. I hate when they do that. No way I was going to put down $10 to find out.

  • I bought the mango one recently and it was so damn good. Definitely worth picking some up at half price.

    • +1

Can confirm the hazelnut one is delicious! Not as good as the real Messina but much better than the standard drumstick.
At $10 for 4 ($2.50), it's not too bad compared to the $4.80 single scoop price point at Messina (although the drumstick is much smaller), but definitely worth picking up some for $5 a box!

  • -1

I enjoyed the mango one but the salted caramel was nothing special. Will pick up the last two with this deal to try!

    • can you upload a photo next time you open one? With no photos on the box, you're plonking down $10 blind.

      • +4

Can you also please provide an MS Paint picture which would better serve OZBers

        • -5

MS paint isn't a format. Any photo will do.

    • Which one is the salted caramel one?

  • -3

Wait.. are they all Gelato? I don't like Gelato.

    • Ice cream

      • -2

At least two of them are gelato or sorbet with no mention of ice cream.

        • Incorrect. There's only one flavour in this range with a gelato base. The rest are ice cream or sorbet.

          • @[Deactivated]: So basically exactly as I said.

At least two of them are gelato or sorbet with no mention of ice cream.

            (I don't like sorbet either)

      • The OP post literally has a description.

  • +5

hahaha, what a way to sell out Messina, and to Peter's (R&R).

F**K the punters! Chase that sweet sweet money… Greed baby all the way!!!!

    • -1

      ok..

    • +2

Honestly, I kinda agree. They're everywhere now. They're on Tim Tams and now Peter's. I remember the days when they only had one store (Kings cross).

But that said, it does sound like they are committed to putting out a high quality product (in their stores, i.e. their main product). I won't elaborate in case I sound like hailcorporate but they detail this on their website.

I would try this for $5 though.

      • +1

        Next will be RivaReno.

        • I actually tried them for the first time ever - but in Italy lol. It was really good… Fior di latte was so good. Hazelnut good. I have yet to try them here in Sydney but I might be a convert…

They only have 2 stores for now :) They're quite expensive though but I think they're a bit better than Messina.

          • @ippy: They can do better with their flavours though. A lot of their flavours are plain and simple though rich. I love their pistachios and mango flavours.

    • They're filling the Adriano Zumbo gap after he went broke.

      • +3

They're filling the Adriano Zumbo gap after he went broke failed to pay employees.

        FTFY

  • Tried Mango&Salted Coconout the other day, tastes great, but not worth $10, but for $5 it's great bargain.

    • You mean it's worth $7 or so.

    • Sounds like $5 is the sweet spot.

  • Perfect. Was waiting for this.

  • For $5 this is a good deal. But for those thinking this is anywhere close to the Ice Cream they sell in Messina stores then you will be disappointed. This is a drumstick with some minimal improvements at best.

  • I like the Ice cream from IKEA :-)

  • Saw these for $10 at my local Woolworths (Gladstone Park VIC) today for $10. There was about 100 boxes, and nobody had touched them. These will be $4 within the month IMO.

  • +2

Messina ice cream is absolutely sub par. Ordered a five flavour tub and 4 out of the 5 tasted bad. Choc mint tasted horrid -used like peppermint tea in it or something. The lemon was so bitter. How you get choc fudge wrong was beyond me. Way below standard. I wish gelato massi was still open.

  • Messina is so over rated. Tastes nothing like real Italian gelato. The couple of times I've tried it I've ended up throwing my cup in the bin.

    • Certainly hope so…..otherwise would have to call you a tosser!

    • Yeah, good Italian gelato is dense and COLD. Messina is neither unfortunately. Salted caramel used to be my favourite but I think they fu cked with it. Sad.

  • Nice deal. Wonder if they have any dairy-free variety.

  • The ice cream in the vanilla bean and peanut praline is beautiful, creamy and smooth, nothing like the stuff in regular Drumsticks. But didn't taste any praline at all. Definitely not worth $10 and $5 is still pricey IMO for what you get, but it's not bad, better than most packaged ice creams.

  • $5 is a good deal to try those flavours thanks! Inside the collaboration: https://gelatomessina.com/blog/petersdrumstickmessinacollab

  • I have a self imposed $1 per ice cream rule so only willing to pay $4 for a pack of 4.

I usually stock up when the offers are on so drop your price Woolies and I might try some.

  • Got three boxes for this deal and just having the mango and coconut now.

    It tastes great!!

  • I just tried the Duche de Leche and it was pretty average tbh. The biscuit pieces aren't crunchy at all… A bit disappointed with Messina. Hopefully the coconut and mango one is better.
Still, decent value at half price.

  • munching on one of these i could only think of how very disappointing and cheapy flavourless it was . the connoisseur hazelnut sticks are waaaaaaaaaay better. eg. milk chocolate over compount chocolate. and more hazlnuts. and creamier flavourful ice cream.

    • I know, I got a box just to see and my god, what a disappointment. Check out the ingredients, it's a race to the bottom in terms of quality. Compound chocolate, FFS!. I suspect it was made by an accountant and a some guy in a lab coat.

It's not just average, its bad, empty calories!

This Messina/Peters is terrible compared to the Connoisseur range.
