Tip to Avoid Talking to Retention Departments When Cancelling Credit Card (for Churning)

Hi Everyone,
Thought I would offer a quick tip to those who wish to avoid talking to retention departments (or in any way wasting time) while trying to cancel a credit card.
When they ask for a reason as to why you are cancelling, just tell them you are applying for a home loan.
They won't be able to get you off the phone fast enough, so you can guarantee that you are spending the minimum amount of time possible in the cancellation process.

Apologies if that was obvious to you, but it wasn't to me initially.

Enjoy!

    You can now cancel online.

    • A far superior tip!

    • Only forcards issued after 1/1/19

Or you can just cancel and insist you are not interested any further promotions…

  • Royal commission most likely to recommend credit card companies to offer online card account closures and/or no passing to retention teams

    • but saying you'll cancel and getting passed to a retention team is often one of the best ways to get what you want

When cancelling things like internet, power, cards, subscriptions, I just tell them I'm moving back to Ukraine.

Most of these companies do not have affiliates or roaming in Ukraine. PayPal doesn't even work there.

Just tell them you're going to prison for murdering a call centre worker

      • I'm using this one next.

Unless I'm cancelling my subscription to Call Center Hate Club Weekly.

  • Best way is to cancel in writing by sending a snail mail letter along with the cut up credit card itself. The letter can say something like "I direct you to close the account 1234 in accordance with clause x.xx of our contract."

It's the best way because they don't have you in a captive position on the phone to palm you off to customer retention, they have a clear directive in writing so they have to act, you're pointing out the exact contract term they are on the hook for, they have the card itself so they have all of their "property" back and can't use that as an excuse to keep the account/contract going and you're not having to make up silly excuses or lies.

  • How come I have never been put to the retention Department when I have churned cards…?

      You're just a pleb I'm afraid.

      • That’s a shame. I’ve always managed to get 10k qantas points when I have been put through. But it hasn’t happened for some time.

Maybe they have caught onto my scam.

  • I always ask them what they can offer you to stay, when they offer something tell them it's not good enough. They might you something better.
