  • Can no longer add 4 and 2 free to cart (GU10 downlight). Changes from 4 paid plus 2 free to 5 paid. Anybody else having this issue?

    • Same here mate

    • Wait for a couple of hours, I was facing the same issue but they came back into stock and I was able to buy with a discount.

  • LIFX or Yeelight .. hmmmm

    • I don't see xiaomi going out of business in any foreseeable future but as a tech startup, LIFX certainly has better features and supports.

      • Ok pulled the trigger; purchased 6x A19 White

      • Xiaomi will never be out of business, particularly if you're talking worldwide; even without Smart Lights, they are the inventor of almost everything … i.e. Smart Umbrella etc

    • Is the Yeelight controlled using Xiaomi Mi Home app? I'm not a fan of the app. I'd pay extra for LIFX for convenience and reliability.

      • Nothing wrong with Mi App

      • The YeeLight app and bulb is more reliable than Lifx.

  • Even though I have 10 lifx globes at home, if I was to buy today I would look at alternatives like yeelight. Lifx prices are too steep. I paid something like $30 or $40 a globe for the original and 2nd gen lifx colours back in the day.

    • If I was to buy today (and I did), just because for the Bayonet cap; tired of having Edison to Bayonet adapter sticking out from my batten and also been reading (and heard) that having light adapter is a non compliance and as such, any damage caused by it, will not be covered by any insurer underwriters in Australia.

      • Yeah thats true. I've been thinking of swapping out my B22 sockets for E27 sockets, but they're like $6 at Bunnings so yeah need to factor that cost and convenience.

BTW before people reply, I'm aware I need an electrician for this.

Yeelights themselves don't have the Australian compliance certifications. However I'm not too worried about this for insurance purposes and I work in the industry.

        • Will the Insurance use this as a reason to not cover? or to make the claiming process difficult ?

          • @tempura: It's in their rights to do so. Depends if they can directly prove that the said device was 100% responsible for whatever your claiming for.

Personally I'm not worried about failure in a B22 to E27 adaptor. There's no circuitry in them, it's just metal contacts. You can test with a multimeter if your worried about shorts, etc.

I'm glad that, despite being a geek, home automation does not interest me. I just don't find it annoys me to live without it.

  • 100mm Downlights are back in stock

  • Thanks OP. Bought 6 downlights for my alfresco.

bought 24 downlights… now to get a sparkie

want to buy 24 too .. still deciding

    • You, sir, are the LIFX King.

      • +1

        I just bought 36 lol.

        • +1

Down lights add up fast when you consider 4 per room

        • +1

          well done sir

          • +1

@tempura: $54 each after discount for 100mm 13w downlight kit is pretty good considering bunnings prices for 9 to 11watt led kits that are not color changing or wifi

  • Do the BR30 night vision ones work in a standard external security sensor light fitting?

My wish would be for them to turn on as needed when the existing sensor unit detects motion and have the IR on at night to improve visibility of my security cameras.

    TIA

    • +1

You should have paid $1943.784 . It seems to calculate 24/12 as 26/10 .. I would contact support and get that fixed asap

Btw can I have your discount code please.

Wow each to their own but some of you are spending a lot of money on lighting.

    • It's all about the bargain, kee it's the value we all crave for.

Anyone buying bulk downlights should consider buying a Z-wave hub (Fibaro, Homey, Vera Plus) and Aeotec Dimmer modules.

    Hub cost average $600

Dimmer modules $99 per group of downlights (usually 4 / 6 per circuit)

Good quality dimmable downlights can be purchased for $20 a light. Aeotec work on leading / trailing edge.

Offers full customisable scenes, as well as working with other devices. Meshes together. No extra lag on wifi. Can be set in scene with other z-wave devices (blinds, lamps, plugged in appliances)

Benefit is you get current state switching on the switch plate and via voice or app unlike these bulbs which require the switch to be left on

At scale the cost is significantly cheaper.

Good quality dimmable downlights can be purchased for $20 a light.

Are they colour changing at that price

    • I'd argue that at the current price the LIFX ones still work out better and cheaper as:

      • They don't require an expensive hub (I hate having different hubs for different devices)
      • The colors can be changed
      • Don't require multiple dimmer switches setup if you have a voice assistant/ automation rules setup

The only con is the lack of current state switching.

      • The final two points are ones I’m fairly sure can be covered easily enough with Zwave setups if you want. The hub is needed but even that has much cheaper options than the $600 quoted. I think you could get away for as little as around $45 for a Zwave stick plugged into an always on PC or a raspberry Pi. Would require a bit of know how though.

  • May just wait for a deal on Philips Hue and have them on a couple of floor lamps. Don't really see the point of having colour changing bulbs all around the house.

  • Thanks, bought 18 :)

Make sure you download lightbulb updates 🧐
    www.limitedresults.com/2019/01/pwn-the-lifx-mini-white/

  • +2

    Absolutely not.

    Discarded LIFX smart lightbulbs reveal:
    - Wifi credentials (stored in plaintext)
    - Root certificate & RSA private key
    - That the device is basically completely open (no secure boot, no debug interface disabled, no flash encryption)

    https://limitedresults.com/2019/01/pwn-the-lifx-mini-white/

And they had eight months to fix ithese issues before this months public disclosure, and did nothing.

Their devices, at least until they sort this out, belong in a growing pile of devices that are part of the Internet of Shit.

  • 20% off code they sent me unsure if it can be used more than once

  • Anyone want to split a 6 pack of 100mm downlights. I only need 3 of them.

    • +1

      sent you a pm

    • Location ?

      • I already purchased with kche3572. Thanks anyhow.

  • The GU10s are not on special - just the regular A19s. At least now, anyway.

Been eyeing these downlights for a while but grabbed this deal for the A19s with the 10% code (I didn't want to gamble the 20% code would come through by midnight tonight). I've hesitated because of the price but also as I know downlights come in different cutout sizes and was a bit nervous these may not fit the apartment I'll be moving into. Hopefully if the cutouts are the wrong size it's not too much of a fuss to widen!

I had a look at the Hue offerings too and while I do like the idea of having more bulbs that would bring the price down, I didn't think the potentially lower power consumption would offset the significant price saving of this deal ($53.80 a bulb, for the 6 bulbs). Hopefully LifX (and specifically, their app support) won't go out of business anytime soon! Thanks @so3n for the maths and the smart meter data!
