  • Good stuff, does it can be used on other laptops like macbook pro or ASUS ROG?

    • Yes.

Charger might not work at full speed on the Asus if it takes more than 100W.

    • As long as it has Thunberbolt 3, yes.

To use this on a Macbook Pro it is necessary to modify a .kext file that controls the whitelist for Thunderbolt devices on OS X. You can use this utility https://github.com/rgov/Thunderbolt3Unblocker

      • Huh, that's really dumb.

It's just a dock not a eGPU or anything, so why wouldn't it work…

For a device that is 2 years old. So very pricey

    • +1

But I doubt you can find a thunderbolt docking station cheaper than this tho

      • One that supports a few 4k monitors, shame it only has a 20cm USB-C cable

        • I think you mean 20in cable. A longer cable would cut down the Thunderbot theoretical transfer rate. At 0.5m its max speed is 40GB/s at 1m its 20GB/s.
The cable can come out and a 1m cable added Dell just doesnt recommend it

          • @damong: no, the cable is TINY and placed on the left side of the dock, the same side the USB-C plug is on the XPS so you cant have the XPS next to the dock

            • @porsche804: My TB16 just arrived. I'm unpacking it now. The cable is 46cm long which I agree is still tiny. You really need the dock on the left side of your XPS or behind. I've seen people mount the TB16 using a Dell bracket onto an arm holding up the XPS. So far so good :)

              • @damong: I bought the WD15 dock because of the cost and the cable length is 80cm and it mounts to the Dell Dock Mounting Bracket Kit.

  • Got one. Thanks OP!

  • Make sure that you read reviews. I've learned the hard way that many of the Dell docks released in the last couple of years have had problems of one sort or another. I'm not sure if the issues included this specific model though.

damn, we got so many of these lying around at work, didn't realize they where so pricey…(not that that really matters…)

If you are happy to buy refurb.. $135 here..

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-TB16-K16A-3GMVT-Thunderbolt…

    Lots of issues with these..

lots of firmware and drive updates required..

Mines working.. but not a plug and play and you would want… must attached and turn on devices.. in a particular order

    • Could you please provide more information on what you went through to get this to work,
Was the updates on the device itself or the pc, was it windows or osx etc.

Would realy like to buy one, price is good and im ok with refurbished as long as it works ok.

      • Update drivers on laptop. Unfortunately Dell update app doesn't automatically pull the latest dock drivers.

Occasionally you might get a day or two without any problems. Otherwise, just be prepared to turn all of your connected devices off and on again every few hours due to something stopping working, whether it is a USB device stops responding, bsod on laptop, displays stop working etc. Most of the time simply restarting the laptop and power cycling the dock is enough.

I use mine at home, so just use the restarts as a reminder to go and grab a drink or a snack.

    • I bought mine refurb from this seller. First one arrived with a dud PSU but it was soon replaced with everything working so I'm happy. The seller was really helpful and communicative.

The dock itself is not bad. Just make sure you install all the necessary driver and firmware updates first (go directly to the website).

I've never had issues like bsod/USB not responding but I have had my external monitors flicker periodically. Unplugging and replugging the connection to the laptop usually fixes it 🤷‍♂️. For the refurb price it's great especially for dell (xps 15). For retail it's insane

I've tried Dell thunderbolt and use-c docks and had terrible problems with USB ports stopping working, HDMI display ports not waking up if a laptop goes to sleep while attached and lagging on USB wireless mouse/keyboard if plugged into dock instead of directly into laptop. Both replaced under warranty (I'd bought direct from Dell) and now working (mostly). as Kelvin says, these aren't plug and play.

Stay away from these, these are troublesome.
At work, we ave so many issues with these, so many odd issues with these.

      • USB ports stop working on the dock, you need to reboot the laptop for them to work, undock the laptop and when you dock again and the USB ports may stop working.
      • Undocking laptops blue screening.
      • Weird display issues. All sort of random issues.
We probably have about 10 duds out of about 30 that I do not trust and will not use.

      Use the non thunderbolt ones.

    • TL;DR - Don't buy

      Long term review ahead!
We have about 30 of these at work.

      • Not plug and play.
      • Display Adapter(s) do not auto wake.
      • Display Adapter(s) have a tendency to to randomly drop a screen (requiring you to unplug and re-plug the Thunderbolt/Type-C connector).
      • Thunderbolt/Type-C connector's plastic shroud breaks under normal usage within a short period of time (We had employees needing a replacement connector as early as 6 months, using the dock).
      • The Thunderbolt/Type-C connector is (active) and has a chipset in it. These cables cost $25 (ex) per piece.

If you really want a Type-C, I've had good experience with the Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Dock (Part Code: 40AC0135AU).

PS: If you have been caught out with the dodgy connectors that come with this Dell dock, the part number is: CPA3V37X - CBL,USB,TBT,130W,0.5M,TRINITYT

  • Anyone know if this unit works with a HP spectre x360 I7 7thgen cpu ? or just HP convertibles in general ?
