I’ve never got the appeal of these. The audio is so muddy and flat. Yet people rave about its ‘great sound’. Excellent price nonetheless

It's good for a BT speaker. It's an excellent toilet speaker.

      • -1

It's really not though. My 3 or so year old Bose SoundLink Mini blows it out of the water. UE sounds terrible in comparison.

I'd only buy this if the waterproofing and rugged construction were my most important factor.

        • +4

Yes, and what 3 times the price?

        • +18

Well you're comparing it with a products costs 2-3 times the price. You'd hope the Bose sounds better.

These UE Booms are great - the sound is perfectly fine for a BT speaker and they're impossible to break (I've dropped mine a bunch of times - once off a roof) and you can take them anywhere without worry (good for beach, pool, etc). Probably wouldn't risk doing any of that with a Bose.

If you're just using it for indoor use, get a real speaker.

        • +2

A single speaker might be a little underwhelming, but the real strength of these is when you get a pair running in stereo more. They're able to fill a room far better than most other speakers and will provide great separation.

        • I love my Soundlink Mini, but it is absolutely just an indoor speaker.

    • +2

      Good for outdoors.

I'm not sure what the latest models are like, but 4 or so years ago, comparing the JBL Charge 2 to the UE Boom 1, the JBL takes the cake on SQ and price any day. Loudness, the UE Boom wins, but you also get a lot of distortion towards max volume.

To be honest though, you don't really buy BT speakers to snob over sound quality. You buy them because they're small and portable, which doesn't really go in hand with good sound. You buy them because they allow you to listen to music in situations where the alternative is nothing. At the beach, in the bush - where ever.

      • I've had two JBL Flip 3s (Similar price point to UE Boom). One died after about 18mnths of fairly light use after purchase. That was a bit of a turnoff, I gotta say. A workmate has the UE Boom and it goes like a Trojan. Great sound (for what it is) and hasn't missed a beat after years of doof-doof. UE wins in my book.

        • Charge 3’s sound is worse than 2’s, and it’s bigger than UE Boom. UEs also seem to pair easier and the app is way better.

Charge can charge, however - a function I used up to 10 times over 2 years only bc I was too lazy to get up and grab a charger.

    • The Megaboom is probably the best, not that muddy in that tbh. The boom series isn't that good and the new Megaboom is a bit of a step down from the original Megaboom.

Also it's Waterproof, probably moreso than the JBL ones too. I bought one for my sister and i was pleasantly surprised.

    • Muddy and flat???? Wow u out of ur mind

  • +2

    Not megaboom = no deal.

  • +3

yeh very underwhelmed by my try at JB-HIFI

  • +5

Why didn't theearth post the deal?

    • +1

didn't he crack the shits and go start his own bargain page? He was an emotional guy. Glad to see he is still buddies with scotty.
what is his bargain page again?
edit: i think his page was buckscoop.com.au ?
and here was his farewell - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/126054
He was back and posting deals well after that though.

Does that big plus and minus look like a Jesus cross in person too?

    • +5

In person Jesus is actually on it.

  • Just curious why it is always the "Night Black" color that gets discounted? Is it because this is the color least liked by most perhaps??

    • +12

      Black ue booms matter

  • this or the megaboom? feel like i wouldn't mind paying $37 extra for the megaboom but unsure if i'll see it at that price anytime soon

    • +2

I had the mega, yes its louder but its too big if you want an easily portable speaker + the extra noise is not needed for most situations

      • +1

Thank you, I purchased this one :)

  • +3

My version 1 is still going strong!

    • Mine too! I somehow like the oldest ones better. This one is too light and feels less premium for some reason… It could just be me!

      Edit: spelling

  • +3

I have both UE Boom 3 and megaboom 3. The difference in my opinion is not worth it, especially for having to carry around a much larger speaker.
The boom 3 is also a lot better than the original boom. If you want a Boom get a boom, if you want a megaboom get the JBL Xtreme 2 it is much much better sounding.

    • I was thinking of getting Megaboom 3 but then again, I want a more flexible option where I can hook up my PC monitor which have audio jack output. So I ended up getting JBL BoomBox instead!

      • The JBL Boombox is 3 times the price though?

    • Doesn’t JBL Extreme require a bigger, dedicated charger and is bassy af?

      • I believe so.

I have the same gripes about my UE Boombox (model just before the original UE Boom). The basiness can often be EQ'd out at the source, but the 12V charger can be a major PITA. I'm tempted to get this Boom to replace my Boombox purely for USB charging.

I believe the JBL is 15VDC so even worse because you can't charge from a car.

  • The only reason that's keeping off this speaker is the lack of headphone jack

    • People use headphone jacks on Bluetooth speakers? Why not insert the headphone jack on the source device? 🤔

      • +2

The aux port is for connecting the speaker directly to the phone's headphone jack, instead of playing over bluetooth.

        • +1

O! I see. I thought people were connecting headphones to the speaker to listen to music. lol

      • I travelled the world for the last year, and during my downtime I’d connect my boom to my MacBook via aux to save battery/charge faster.

        • Got it. I misunderstood the whole thing. Thought hieucd97 meant connecting headphones to the speaker.

  • This or Bose Soundlink Colour II for $134? I read some scary reviews on the Bose die after a short while.

  • This or Flip 4?

  • OOS?

  • JB has the Sony XB31 for 139 down from 250 apparently in store,

    not a bad option possibly?

  • The Sony XB21/31 is a better deal in terms of price and sound quality imo. I have the XB20's and they are great!

  • This deal appears to be back on, btw. Price went up to $135, but is back down to $110 again.

  • Missed the boat
