1080p screen and well under a grand, nice!

    • +4

1080p should be in all laptops 13'' and above IMO. It's actually insane that they are still using 1336x768 at all in laptops that are 13-17 inch.

  • Is the Radeon GC worse than the integrated Intel hd620 in the cpu setup?

    • +5

The video card is based on very old architecture, it's GCN 1.0 so it's definitely very dated in terms of capabilities and performance.

The Radeon 520 is a dedicated entry-level graphics card for laptops that was released in 2017. AMD reveals that the chip features five compute units based on the GCN architecture and 2 GB GDDR5 64-bit graphics memory. The new chip is not based on the Polaris architecture from 2016, but the old one that was introduced with the Radeon R5 M230 in 2014 and later used in the M330 and M430 / M440 / M445.

It probably could do without the Radeon GPU, would reduce the production cost and improve battery consumption.

      • good lord.

    • +4

Basically the same. Zero benefit. Just there for people that will blindly buy dedicated GPU but no idea about its capability.

Nice price for a solid Vostro!

If this had Thunderbolt 3 Id grab one

Would of been better they dump the DVD drive for a thinner unit

    • Agree!! I would remove it and put in something ghetto with SSD / HDD

    • +1

I think of it as the more features the better.
Not all features are good but I would rather a DVD drive any day of the week than the laptop being thinner.
Even smartphones, I would rather have a headphone jack if it meant the phone being slightly larger to accommodate it.

For the frequency that most people use an optical drive, they'd be better served by an external one (which are only $20 on ebay).

I replaced the optical on my old work laptop with an SSD - it was much better.

      • +4

Who uses DVD anymore, would of been ok if it was a blu ray

      • +1

I think of it as the more features the better.

Not if those features are rarely used and other features such as form factor are sacrificed in the process.

    • +3

There are Optibay kits on feebay for around $10~15 a pop that lets you replace the (perhaps unnecessary) optical drive for a empty SATA slot for a 2.5" HDD/SSD.

      • how hard is this to do and really how worthwhile is it to say waiting for something that doesnt have an optical drive but with similar specs?

everything about this laptop is great except this useless (for the majority) optical drive.

        • +1

The only real difficult part is removing the rear of the laptop. Though based on pics I don't think this one will be real difficult.

After that it's a case of inserting the drive and securing it in place. Some will have screw holes or other times double sided tape will suffice.

    • Still got the space which is handy for a myriad of other things like SSD/HDD caddies.

meanwhile, I personally use DVD's all the time as I use them for clients to read and burn. Prefer it over USB sometimes.

Processor Label Intel ®CPU label for Core™ i5 KBL Included in price

  • What kind of SSD is included here? the price is the best i've seen.

    • +1

Get the Ryzen+Vega APU instead, Lenovo's and Dell's often go on sale to ~$700. This has trash tier gpu from 5 years ago.

  • Wouldnt this be a better option if you dont want the optical drive, and a slightly better graphics card and 14" screen

    https://www.dell.com/en-au/work/shop/business-laptops-ultrab…

    • Yes if it wasn't $300 more expensive.

      • very true !

      • 14" screen and smaller form factor is considered an upgrade in today's world of technology.

OP, can you do any deal similar to these at Microsoft recently: https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/p/dell-inspiron-14-5000-2-in…

I would still buy it even if it is price at $850.

    • That looked like a really good deal

    • -1

That's a inspirion it is like a consumer product Vostro is more like a business one. Better quality and even better support. Also this one doesn't have the graphic card.

      • The Vostros are usually based off of the Inspiron products, usually with a slightly nicer casing and a slightly nicer base warranty with the ability to upgrade to ProSupport.

Based on the photos I'd say this is a cousin of the Inspiron 3567.

        • -1

They are the entry lvl business. Trusty me they are way better than inspirion models.

      • The intel is 620 integrated graphic card is just as good if not better than the graphic card in the laptop in this deal. Just because it have a dedicated graphic card doesn't mean that it is good. The graphic card in this laptop will just end up using more power for the same performance as an uhd620.

The Vostro in this deal is bulky and heavy, no touch screen, no IPS display, no backlit keyboard. I don't really need "PRO" IT support so the Inspiron will work just fine for me.

        • I'm not too sure if a integrated graphics card can be stranger in applications like Autocad or Sony Vegas pro, than a dedicated graphics. Also been without touch screen is a blessing since it has antiglare with who really work, not play browse games and YouTube, it is a better option. So for a wor propose this deal is amazing. Also you can get 3 year warranty or even on site warranty if chat if Dell.

          • @Femelo: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-UHD-Graphics-620…

The dedicate graphic card in this laptop is dog pop, just accept it.

            • @highdealer: Fair enough looks like from the user benchmark the Intel gpu is better. But I still thinking the problem could be driver recognition since some of softwares do not recognise the dedicate graphics cards this play a huge difference. But anyway in my case was a pretty good deal even with this "dog poop" graphic card. Also I'm pretty sure you can disable the dedicated one and just use the Intel.

  • Was this a business order that fell thru which is why only 70 available

    • it's probably to entice the ozbargainer to buy - fast!

    • If an order fell through I'd think it'd go straight to the Dell Outlet

  • I just placed an order but it shows delivery date as 12 March 2019. Called customer care and they said it's a build to order and they don't have any in stock at the moment.

  • Is there an option for IPS display?

  • Anyone have this and know if it supports Linux?

    • if it has a cpu and hdd then its supports linux :-)

  • The 520 graphics card is ddr3 or ddr5? 2gb?
    Thx

    • it's ddr6 of course. why you even asking silly questions
