  • A similar product, I'll just put it here for comparison, this week Costco Adelaide has merino long sleeve shirts for $30. Comparable to the $59.95 Icebreaker https://au.icebreaker.com/en/mens-baselayers/oasis-long-slee…

I've never worn the Costco shirt but my Icebreaker shirt is quite nice and long wearing.

  • I have many IB pieces bought from many years ago. Boy the prices have risen. Anyone know how the outlet prices compare to this?

    • +1

Certainly worth going to the outlet at the right time of year. I was there just after Christmas and everything was 60% off retail (plus some stuff even more) - brings it back to a price that is not unreasonable.

Icebreaker seems to be following the same model as all outdoor stores (Macpac, Kathmandu etc) of being horribly over-priced, and then discounting.

I have found in the past the thinner garments deteriorate too fast with holes forming. As if my merino wool was being slowly sheared away along with my precious money. Maybe it's only an issue with thinner 100% Merino, so I tend to get a blend nowadays, but haven't tried Icebreaker for a while.

My 100% merino always gets those moth holes in them. Would love to know if have a 2% blend makes a big difference to that.

      • +1

Yeah that's the exact issue, though not caused by moths as far as I'm aware. I don't know about 2% blend, but haven't had any issues with the blended merino from Kathmandu and Mountain Designs.

        • Ah… I thought it was like a moth eating the wool. Always get tiny holes.

@sitdowndisco: It's both. Sadly silverfish and moths (profanity) love merino, I've lost several shirts to them including a few I hadn't even worn yet.

But also wearing them a lot, they suffer UV damage and will wear out on shoulders/waist from backpacks rubbing it.

I've tried the lycra blended IB shirts but find they lose shape too easily. i just buy whatever is on special and wear them until they wear out.

IB is amazing, thanks for the post. Love my gear. The thin stuff does deteriorate quicker than cotton, but I wear my tops day in, day out, and for all the performance I am happy to have that hit on durability. They breathe and wick and are so much lighter. That's the trade off for technical gear.

    • You should try the $5 workout shirts from Kmart. I was amazed at how well they actually work. If you're feeling lush you can splash out for the $10 shirt for formal workout occasions.

      • Merino $5 workshirts? Link?

I used to love Icebreaker, but they are getting a bit too expensive and their designs are pretty ugly.

    • some ppl may not notice but the cuts of the tshirts are different from years ago. I have about 6 icebreaker tshirts and have retired another 6.. and the new cut (within last 2-3 years) is much tighter under the armpit than it was previously. bit annoying.
