Google Home Mini + Tile Mate Bluetooth Tracker $75 @ JB Hi-Fi

130

My first post after years of benefitting from the OZ wisdom so take it easy on me guys.

I walked into JB Hifi, Southland to buy Red Dead Redemption II and spotted the counter deal for a free Tile Mate with every Google Home Mini purchase. I was toying with getting 1 each for the kids' bedroom and the Tile was going to be a bonus as I am always leaving things behind.

The special price for both was $75 so bought 2.

With or without a tile, google knows where you are.

Got a Google Home Mini for $30 last year, is the tile mate worth $45 ?

tile mate is around $20 on sale, and $25-$50 when not.

The newest ones have replaceable batteries, so they're not disposable after a few years.

If it's the 2018 version, it's $40 or so, but you can get imported versions, it is bluetooth after all. There's around 7 or 8 types of Tile trackers, with similar names (slim, pro, sport, style, mate, mate 2018, gen 1 and gen 2)

I think it's $25-$29 at TGG now, probably cheaper elsewhere.

  • Looks like the one with the replaceable battery

  • with the whole tile thing, it requires other ppl to buy into the eco system so they can help you find it ? is that right? there's no actual gps on the device.

    • Yep, correct. GPS on a device requires a range of things:

      • Processor
      • Network interface
      • Two way GPS if no network
      • Lots more power / power consumption than is feasible for a coin battery

None of the devices actually have GPS chips in them, using crowd-sourced GPS locations.

Trackr and Tile are the two major players, others in the market as well of course.

  • Just confirming that it is the new Tile Mate with replaceable battery.

I bought a 4 pack of tiles 6 months ago. I share the same account with the wife so I can detect missing keys in her vacinity when I'm away from home. This is useful on the odd occasions when I forget to put my keys in my work bag I can at least confirm they're at home.

Also useful if I'm running late for work and I can find my wallet. Save me from huntinyin the house.

As for Google Assistant Integration it works well when you have one tile, but when you have 4 tiles like I do the GA Tile action can't seem to figure out which tile I'm asking for no matter what I try. Very annoying cause asking "ok google, find my car keys" results in an endless loop with Tile unable to figure out what I'm asking for.
