Are these any good for a technodyslexic older person? Simple to use?

    • +2

Maybe steer clear. I found the cheaper nokia 3310 phone an absolute pain. My wife (who needs a simpler phone) refused to engage with it but I didn't blame her at all. It was just a horrible and confusing interface and button latout. I very gladly smashed it with a hammer, it was that bad. If you're a geek, no problem..
For a technophobe the Alcatel flip phone I got next (after a price drop to $50 at target) turned out to be an absolutely fantastic "dumb phone"…
Probably designed as a "senior's phone" but really fits the bill for anyone needing supreme ease of use for calls only.

      • Hi, Was the flip phone locked to vodafone? And if so did you unlock it easy?

Sorry to hear about your broken hammer!

        Did the phone survive?

You asked the wrong question. Did the hammer survive?

    • My dad has been using the Telstra Easycall 2 for awhile now. Here is a review of the latest version

See my reviews of Nokia 3310/8110: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/433511

In short, 3310 no because call quality is shit, 8110 perhaps but the software on it is poop.

    • screen and keypad might be too small. it's intuitive enough to use but navigating app menus and settings might be tedious. i love my 8110 but i think for seniors, a mid-range smartphone would be easier to use.

    • +1

You may still want to look at smartphones for the screen sizes.

Samsung has a "easy mode", found in settings -> display -> easy mode.
Here's a video of it on the s8
      https://youtu.be/Zysn5x08yac
Enlarged fonts, gave more space for bigger icons, a contacts page on the home screen.

Huawei's "simple mode" can be found in settings -> system -> simple mode.
(Curse them for making it hard to find a user guide. I'm looking at the global site 2019 Y9's manual, so instructions may be different)
Looking at videos showing it, I wish they copied windows phones more.

New in Auspost's catalogue is the Opel Easysmart for $149. But it's 3G only and I can't find information on the storage online.

But in the end, apps behave the way they're made for Android, so that may still be an issue.

“with up to 25 days of battery standby time from a single full charge”
Those were the good ol’ days!

    • +3

lol, my 5110 used to show full battery for a week but itd only last 5 minutes when actually used for a phone call. luckily optus prepaid was so expensive i used to try to make my calls end in 30 second blocks. if they were too slow to say bye at 28 second mark then too bad for them hahah.

    • i'm getting 7 days battery life when i just have it on and don't do much with it.

Seems like it doesn't have Whatsapp support yet?

The original was my first phone, loved it, im tempted to get this just for fun. I wonder if it can do internet hotspoting…

    • JioPhone (KaiOS) already has it. Nokia seems to be sitting tight on their asses.

Dual sim? asking for a friend.

    • Single.

    • even if it did have dual sim, only one of them will be 4g, while the other languishes on the now dead 2g.
(my grey import 8110 is uselessly dual sim)

good if you're going overseas where they still run the 2g network.

Check the reviews before buying. Not good.

  • It's been this price for a few months now at Harvey's.

  • why do the buttons need a cover?

Back when I had a phone with a number pad, you just lock the keypad by pressing menu then *.

    • +3

Because back in the day, the 8110 was considered too small, the cover was more of an excuse to extend the mic so it's closer to the mouth to be more like the traditional land line phones. This was bucking the trend of clam shell phones.

As mic technology improved, there was no longer the need for the mic to be so close to the mouth.

      • So the mic is on the sliding flap and not the bottom of the phone? I thought it was just a flat sheet of plastic.

My first phone was an 8310 and there was no flap. Body itself is about the same as this or smaller.

        • +1

I don't know about these updated models, but the original 8110, the mic was on the cover. If you looked on the underside of the cover, you would see 2 exposed metal ribbons for + and -.

The 8110 came out way before the 8310, and as mentioned, the mic technology improved greatly since the release of the 8110.

Just looked it up, there was a 5 yrs gap between the 8110(1996) and the 8310(2001)
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nokia_products#Nokia_8xxx_%E2%80%93_Premium_series_(1996%E2%80%932007)

          • @Broke-Ken: I see.

Nokia was known to not make a ton of sense with their numbering, so it's hard to tell at a glance which phone is newer/better from the numbers alone.

    • +1

Back in the day many guys (including myself) liked to put the phone in the back pocket (the banana shape of the phone fits the butt contour nicely). It was easier to slide the cover back after use (didn't even have to press End Call) to prevent butt dialing than to press menu then *.

      • +1

Did not realize butt dialing was a thing. That is umm.. informative.

Back in those days there was an obsession with making phones smaller and smaller. If you told someone back then that some day the trend would be
"bigger and bigger", they'd think you're crazy.

But if it lasts 25 days, you can get a full day use from 7.2 minutes of charging. That sh!ts on quickcharge 3

      • -2

Yeah but if it's still only charging a small battery I think it's a valid criticism.

  • -3

Wow. No Wi-Fi… that's surprising. Get that in $30 phones these days. Battery life must be insanely good.

    • +4

      It's got WiFi
