Reliable Car $6000-$7000 First Car for Wife to Learn

Hi everyone

Looking at purchasing a reliable second hand car.

Wife will be using for work late so needs to be reliable.

Will be taking her Ls to Ps from international licence.

Her first car
Wanting to spend $6-7000, $8000 at a stretch
KMS would be ideal to less than 100k to have it for 5 years

I know people will say Corolla 2008 or so but I find they are so marked up for a ten year old car at $10000!

Can you all suggest a make and year within the budget. Thanks

  • hyundai getz or yeah corolla

Getz, crashes like crap and understeers to buggery

Honda jazz 2010 onwards. Very reliable car. 6 air bags. Smooth engine. Car will last long if you maintenance it well.

  • Where are u located? In Perth u can pick up an 2008 corolla for 6-7k.10-11k and u can pickup a newer model 2012/13 with slightly higher ks

  • I'm in Melbourne

  • Lancer, you get go wrong with a lancer! They are usually under rated due to lack in tech and long overdue design.

    • -2

      Except they are deathtraps

      • +2

Yeah. I saw five on fire this week and two up the same tree last week. Wouldn’t get a lancer.

        • Weird… could of sworn ANCAP/IIHS had different results for them… probably got petitioned by MMC

Any idea what year OP is looking at?

        • You seen 5 lancers on fire in a week? thats sounds like a lancer epidemic? lol
          and would be on news.
Only burn down lacer on news was stolen.

          • @boomramada: Must be because they are ‘death traps’. Must have forgotten my sarcasm emoji. If they were a death trap (or had Takata airbags) they either wouldn’t be on the roads or would have been subject to many recalls. I can’t say that I’ve seen any mention anywhere of a lancer being anything other than just another small/medium car and no more dangerous than the competitors.

I wonder if kronicmastibator would like to give us some more details on why.

  • I got a 05 Mazda 6 with 120000kms personally, it's been good thus far.

  • Getz, Yaris, or Jazz.

  • Lancer. Reliable and cheap. They're not sort after as the shape hasn't changed in a decade so you'll get a good price.

  • Look harder for a Corolla.

  • +2

What car do you have yourself to use?
It might make more sense for your wife to drive that car when working late (for reliability etc.) and that may change what is acceptable to you as a 2nd car.

  • Swift.

Cheap on fuel, crash very well, easy to find at wreckers, parts are cheap from Korea

I cannot believe how reliable these are, I cannot kill mine!

Failing that I'd hunt a good NHW20 Prius

My wife bought an 2007 Corolla with 92,000km for $8000 last year. Here are some options for you:

    https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/Toyota-Corolla-2008…

The ones for around $9k, you could probably negotiate down closer to $8k. If you want to stay within your $6k budget, you could look for something a little older, but still low mileage. Here's one for $5k:

That said, you're budgeting wrong. How expensive a car is isn't how much you're paying upfront. It's how much you pay upfront minus residual price, i.e. how much you sell it for at the end of ownership. You intend to keep the car for 5 years, so let's say you buy an $8k corolla (2008), look at a Corolla five years older (i.e. 2005) and they're around the $4k - $5k mark. You're spending around $3k. That's cheaper than most other cars.

    • Thanks! I must not be looking hard enough!

    Honda Jazz or Civic.
    Kia Cerrato
    Lancer
    Skoda Fabia or VW Polo

Defensive driving course once she gets licence

Thanks guys! OzBargain is the best community all whilst helping us all make bad life decisions like saving some money to eat poorly at maccas or kfc or buy more video games!

To clarify I drive a Mazda 3 2006 which has been great but it's a manual but she's not inclined to learn (even if it will save us!) So will be looking for an auto.

I will look harder than and leaning to a great Corolla or other options!

    Thanks as always

UM tell her she has 2 choices learn manual or walk

  • +1

No love for the OzB fav, Camry? Probably too big for your wife, even though they're considered a medium size car.

    • Yeah she wants a 'small car's even though I think it won't make a big difference. More size, comfortable but she want a small hatchback type.

Who am I to argue with logic lol

Happy wife happy life they say!

      • Fair enough. Perhaps consider a Yaris as well? Make sure it's a YRS or YRX as both will have the 1.5 litre engine for a little bit more power as opposed to the YR which is a 1.3L. Also, will she be getting a manual licence?

Example YRS manual sedan on carsales here. Or a current shape ZR manual which also has the 1.5L and heaps of bells and whistles here. Both these models will have all safety standard, such as 7 airbags and stability control.

        • She will just be learning in an auto hence why I have to buy the new car

          • @gooner85: Ah, okay. Spotted this YRS auto sedan, but as it's an earlier model, it misses out on all the bags and stability control. Basically dual bags only and ABS.

      • Yeah she wants a 'small car's even though I think it won't make a big difference.

Corolla not that much smaller than a Camry, should actually check the dimensions.

      • Smallness for what purpose? My wagon with enormous windows and parking sensors is a lot easier to park in the tight space in front of my house than my small convertible with its tiny strip of windows

  • Also do people buy more off car sales? Is that safer than say Gumtree?

    • +2

Carsales has a higher entry point that Gumtree as the ads actually cost you money, so you end up with less tyre-kickers and more genuine sellers. If you don't know what you're doing, you can be scammed anywhere. I wouldn't necessarily say that Carsales is "safer" than Gumtree.

  • I would definitely recommend a Mazda 6. A very reliable, safe and functional car that looks great and easily within your budget!!

  • Honda Civic

  • What are her needs?
She's likely to make a few dings (we all do when starting out) so you want to find a car which has plentiful parts/spares:
    Toyota Corolla/Yaris
    Honda Jazz/Civic
    Hyundai i30
    Mazda 3
Stick with Japanese/Korean and you'll be fine

  • Honestly surprised no one has said Ford Fiesta 09+, they are a hell of a fun drive!

  • Have a look at pickles.com.au
Search through the fixed price sales…. currently there is a 2010 mitsubushi outlander there, less than 100k kms, under $10k. A 2012 ford festiva with 90k kms for $8k, a 2014 ford focus with 80k kms for $10k.

Ive bought 2 cars through them before witg no hassles whatever.

  • When it comes to used cars brands dont matter that much.
Yes there might be some brands to avoid such as second hand Europenan cars.
Any used car in good condition with low kms (under 100,000km) and with a reliable service history will do the job.

Mitsubishi Lancers usually present the best value for money
