  • Good deal. MSY haven't got the best locations to pick up though - how much is delivery?

    Price beat at OW?

    • +1

yep, OW price beats MSY. Not usre if they beat 3 for $8 though

  • -3

Good price however, not enough USB C devices. So my MacBook Pro is the only device I have wirh a USB c port. All the rest have USB A

    • +2

Can pick up a USB C to A adapter for a buck or 2?

      • Yes that is true but I’ve alreasy got a USB A to USB C adapter as this seems to be then more common application.

    • +2

Can use on mobile phones, almost all mobile phones now use type c.

      • +10

        Not iPhones 😆

        • +2

Next gen iPhones are likely to move to USB-C. iPad Pro already moved to USB-C.

@netsurfer: I’ll most likely be staying with my iPhone 8plus unless apple brings back actual physical home button. I tried the iPhone X and hated it.

                @netsurfer: good for you.

                • +2

@Krazyy: This device exposes an ugly side of an interesting decision from Apple. Despite the width of the device is on the shorter side of USB flash drives, it still occupies a fair amount of space. With Apple putting two USB-C ports close to each other, there is very little room for the USB-C port next to it. Essentially making it impossible to have two of them side by side on a Macbook Pro.

Basically, even if we want to connect all 3 to the same MBP, that cannot be done unless a dock is used because there is just no space there. It is a weird decision from Apple since with only 4 ports, why can't Apple spread them out?

Also, just like a lot of USB-C dongles and accessories, we often purchase most of them for no performance benefit (just like this one), but merely to overcome the all USB-C port setup. It's just dumb that most reasonable priced 4K HDMI or DisplayPort to USB-C dongle cannot do 4K HDR, whereas a simple HDMI 2 cable can easily achieve it.

Have you tried samsung's home button? what do you think of that? not sure what the implementation is on the iphone x.

i was really sceptical about no physical button, but was pleasantly surprised moving to the s9. the haptic feedback is spot on i reckon and it's pressure sensitive too so a hard press feels noticeably different

              • +1

@netsurfer: Actually I kind of agree with you.

Despite overcoming one issue with Type-A that a five year old could have designed their way out - that being it's unclear which way to insert it - Type-C introduces another possibly more annoying issue: Type-C sockets are too loose. Cables fall out of them under their own weight sometimes and the smallest jerk on the cable from moving stuff around accidentally unplugs them.

                Like WTF USB forum?

          • @netsurfer: good luck with that. If they go USB C it will be there own version.

        • +1

Not a fan of iPhone, never used one.

        • Next generation will

Apple is superior and more advanced, will not follow industry standard.

@bonbon: After Steve Jobs, Apple have changed a lot. While in the past, Apple desktops and laptops did use less common ports (i.e. Thunderbolt 2), they were never about cutting ports or having less ports. MBP 2015 and earlier has a good selection of ports (which easily beat most PC laptops at the time).

But now, they are the leader of reducing ports and parts. Removal of headphone jack on phones, home button removal. Laptops - removal of USB-A, HDMI, card reader, MagSafe, and the top row of the keyboard (function keys - replace them with a touchbar. You can no longer tell whether a MBP is fully charged without turning it on and check in the OS. Not only that, even the internals get reduction (internal plugs and pins used to have decent number of ground pins between a high voltage and low voltage pins (for safety), now they removed those pin(s). If there is a voltage spike on the high voltage pin, without that safety ground pin next to it, on a MPB 13 inch, that will zap your CPU (so bye bye CPU).

iPhone X/XR/XS are the only phones that require pressing two buttons to turn it off. Lightning, while it was good when it was introduced, does have a bandwidth limitation (look at the HDMI dongle) - and technically, with less pins than USB-C, you cannot expect more bandwidth out of it. To get USB 3.1 gen 1 speed out of lightning, you need to get a proper USB-C to lightning cable (and to cut cost, Apple's latest 1m version curtail that to USB 2.0 (used to be USB 3) - okay, the price did reduce a bit).

It is difficult for Apple users to switch camp, and Apple know it well.

Saw this in their email deals this morning, I thought maybe the get 2 free was a mistake.

  • Anyone found any deal on a 128gb?

  • +6

Although it's a good deal however not looking forward to walk into the Kensington/Kingsford NSW store and deal with the chinese dude which looks for all the excuses in the world to not working or searching for the items you asked for.

More than once he will just say "Last one sold earlier this morning".

The golden moment was I rock up the store around 10:30am and ask for a 20m LAN cable the specific model. He just told me "Oh a guy came here earlier and bought all the 10 meters and above LAN cable in the store, try Ultimo".

This particular shop has the most ridiculous inventory management system I have ever seen in retails. He just look for the canton boxes here and there to look for the item you asked for if it is on a good day

Ah now I can see the shopkeeper himself goes online and neg me!

Bought the 64GB version of this from a past deal. The biggest concern is that it heats up on a laptop quite quickly and is easily the hottest USB flash drive I own (hot in terms of temperature). I tried it on a Macbook Pro (I called mine Donglebook), and another person tried it on his Dell XPS.

On mobile phones however, the temperature is more reasonable.

Performance, it is within Sandisk Ultra range. It doesn't come close to my old Sandisk Extreme one (USB-A) and that Sandisk Extreme is quite cool. Also, with the USB-C ports close to each other on a Macbook Pro, I found that I was only able to connect the Apple USB-C to USB-C charging cable next to one of these (and there is virtually no gap between the two). The heat on this flash drive appears to affect the USB-C charging cable.

In short, it does not have the USB-C performance advantage (it is merely USB 3.1 gen 1, and being Sandisk Ultra, it doesn't even max out USB 3.1 gen 1) and it does have the usual cons of USB-C. Price is good though, but no surprise they are doing this buy 1 get 2 free to clear the stock. No issue for mobiles though, plugged it to an phone, detected and ready to use right away (and not too warm).

  • Good deal however I dont have use for usb type C…I still need the old school type

  • +1

Ah, USB 3.1, free upgrade to USB 3.2!

    • Nice

  • +1

Just to point out, MSY shows the same model 32GB at 8$. Price match that at OW ($29!!) And you can get the equivalent of 2x1

    • +1

      3*16 = 48 not 32.

      • True, but basically, if you use the MSY 32GB @ $8, this is essentially buy 2 (16*2) get 1 free.

        • Confused ($8 for 48GB compared to $8 for 32GB) but agree single 32Gb is more useful and a great find!

    • Thanks for the find! I'd much rather have a single 32GB stick than 3 16GB sticks since I'd only really use one at a time.

  • The top says 'No Limitation' but the fine print says '2 per customer'? Was i wrong in assuming 'No Limitation' meant you could buy as many as you want?

    • obviously yes, otherwise they would be gone to 1 broden

      • You'd think they wouldn't make such a simply error though? Isn't that part of marketing 101?

        • amazon sends me emails for $150 10tb hard drive routinely - of course I cant buy it because its not really 150 dollars. Which do you reckon is worst?

          • @petry: If that is Amazon AU, either one would be up for false advertising if you were to follow it through. If it's Amazon US, I don't know where the jurisdiction is but they will likely get away with saying they are not directed at an Australian audience, unlike MSY is doing.

    • +1

I think no limitations means there is no limitations for the promotion, e.g. some websites do promotion of first 100 pieces.

  • Can you just buy one?

  • +1

Officeworks on Elizabeth st said they can't match promotions like buy one get x free

    Still bought one for $8

  • OOS - went in store and they told me they had sold out by 11am today!

  • Anyone seen these types of things with a metal keyring attachment & casing? My keyring gets abused a fair bit, so a more rugged version would be better…

  • Amazon…not there yet for 32GB one:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/SanDisk-Ultra-Type-C-Flash-Drive/d…

    $15.

  • Ordering online is popping up as $24 + delivery… I thought it was available online as well

  • Can you plug one of these into an Android phone that has a USB-C port and it just works? Or do you need the usual "OTG" hardware/cable and plug the USB stick into that?
