  • Is a bridge required?
Or is that just for full capability?
    Thanks.

    • Whats bridge requirements?

      • A hue bridge.

        • Yes a bridge is required for Hue Bulbs, they use Zigbee to communicate with the Hub. Once you are going more than a few bulbs best to go the hub way, otherwise you will have to many wifi devices slowing down your network.

@landroverz7: Weeellll…. kinda. These IOT things tend not to flood networks with data except when sending credit card and password details to our friends in China. ;-)

Thing to keep in mind is zigbee operates in the same 2.4ghz range as old school wifi, so can cause issues if you're not aware of that and can change the channels to avoid interference. Obviously no issue if you've moved over to 5ghz.

          • @landroverz7: where's the proof of that? i have 50 devices on my router and don't see any issue with it

            • @lgacb08: My wife’s parents POS router can’t cope without having home devices and struggles with a few mobile devices and smart TVs. We’ve had to stay there while moving house and frequwnrly we have to turn off one wifi device because their routers maxed out it’s connected device limit so that we can connect something else.

Clearly a crap router but it does show these sorts of issues exist.

  • Ordered. Also got $5 off "MasterCard promotion" (I didn't do or enter anything it just appeared in the final purchase price summary).

    • So “MasterCard promotion” appear only after you placed the order? Not on the final place your order page?

      • It did appeared in the order summary -> before committing to buy.

        • Hm…got up to "Place your order" but still did not see the discount. Did you buy anything else? Maybe is offered by your card issuer. Thanks for the reply anyway.

          • @Omnibane: OK. I received the email below from amazon today. The $5 off must have been the the automatically applied 'promotional certificate' (and nothing to do with MasterCard - I'll know for sure on my next Amazon purchase)

            Hello,

We're contacting you about your order #251-9562583-1472659. We recently discovered an error that caused the following item(s) to be displayed at an incorrect price:

Sharpie Clear View Highlighter, Pink 12-pack.

In this case, we're unable to offer these items for the incorrectly posted price. Therefore, we've cancelled your order(s) for these items, and you haven't been charged.

At any given time, despite our best efforts, a small number of the millions of items on our site may be priced incorrectly. We're very sorry for any disappointment this may cause.

To help make up for the inconvenience caused, we've applied a $5 Amazon.com.au promotional certificate to your account. This amount has been applied to your account and will be automatically applied to your next order containing item(s) shipped and sold from Amazon AU.

  • Bought one, thanks OP

  • This will work alone without the Hue right? I mean still control it with just WIFI?

    • needs the bridge or one of the Philips dimmer switch

    • No it uses ZigBee not wifi.
The hub connects via LAN cable and talks via ZigBee to the devices. If you have an alternative ZigBee hub you can do it that way but I suggest the Phillips hue hub is the best scenario to utilise they software environment.
or as mentioned above direct with the dimmer switch

No. The post is arguably wrong to call this a WiFi bulb as the bulbs themselves do not use wifi but zigbee. WiFi control is via the necessary hub.
