  • Oh… via Singapore

  • I went there in November. I took my dad with me.

Staying there is not cheap. It's the most expensive part of Thailand.

And then my dad died there at sea. :(

And it cost 18.7k to repatriate his body which we have not yet got insurance approval for yet (they will also pay a max of 15k).

I want to go back to Thailand some day. It's a beautiful country, and the people there are super nice, but the place is connected to some very painful memories for me.

If I was to rate a person's service out of 10, with 10 being the maximum I would expect to receive, the Thai people get a 15. Incredibly kind and generous to us in our difficult time. They go above and well beyond for you.

    • +1

I'm really sorry for your loss

      • +1

        Thanks.

    • Was there any temptation to OzBargain a cheaper repatriation solution?

      • +1

        a'la Weekend at Bernies?

      • Don't know if that was intended as a joke, but I've yet to see repatriation deals on Ozb.

        • It wasn't meant as a joke. If the current plane fares are in the $275 ballpark, the cost is clearly not weight based. There is nothing glamorous about the expensive repatriation option. A fridge in freight is still a fridge in freight. Maybe by ship is significantly cheaper. Call me cheap, but cremation would save a bundle. My mum fell deathly sick overseas and only just squeezed in to fit for flying regulations. I'm interested. An Australian criminal jumped a rental yacht in Thailand and sailed back to Australia. It probably can be done for under $20k, obviously a lot of effort.

          • @[Deactivated]: We did cremate him.

Repatriarion involves more than just the cost of a flight.

There is medical expenses, hospital and ambulance fees, treatment, storage in morgue, embalming, autopsy if requested, a casket to ship the body in, which you're going to want to pay for a good one because then it can be used at the funeral instead of buying another one.

Sending a body back does not cost the same as a passenger flight. It needs to go into a special storage on the deck somewhere and requires extra handling (it's heavy and takes up a lot of space).

If a person is dead, they won't let you just take them on board and have a seat next to someone. Your mother was deathly sick but not dead, thankfully because if she was, the cost would go up and it would lead to a ton of complications.

We had to see a lot of police and government officials, several times each. That's a lot of transport which isn't cheap either in Phuket. We also needed to visit the embassy. BTW, the embassy doesn't open on weekends or public holidays and Thailand has 30 of them in a year. Person dies on Friday night? See you Monday.

We were very lucky the Thai people we were with were very generous and kind and helped us through this spending days working for us.

            • @lostn: Interesting and thank you. :)

In my Mum's case, she got dizzy in Barcelona and it was terminal secondary brain cancer. She and my father had the choice of spending her last days in her scandinavian childhood home country or try to get treatment back in Australia. They chose coming back here and never had a useful hour in the following few months. She lived a bit longer but not one good memory and no benefit to her. In retrospect less treatment, shorter travel and a different destination for a few good memories would probably have been a better choice.

sorry for your loss. does the insurance have a death policy ? you can do a separate claim for that to pay in to his estate .

      • +1

It does. But they are combing everything over every detail with a fine toothed comb, doing all they can to avoid paying.

Sorry guys, I didn't mean to derail the deal post.

Phuket is a great place, and the people working in the tourism industry will treat you extremely well. This is also a very cheap flight.

The one way flight I took home, admittedly on short notice, going from Phuket-Sydney-Melb cost $1700, not including baggage and meals.

The accomodation there cost us almost $200 a night which included a busy season surcharge. Right now should not be the busy season though, so you should be able to avoid the surcharge. This would not be considered expensive by western country standards, but SE Asia standards, I was surprised.

  • I personally love Phuket. I have been 3 times. Phi phi island is great to visit. Very beautiful place.
It's probably one of my favourite places I have visited.

It's a bit more expensive then bali however fake electronics like fake jbl speakers ect are very cheap there but their clothing is more expensive then bali and at times, clothing can be the same price as a lot of electronics

Make sure you get accommodation within walking distance from where you want to be because the taxi mafia charge more than Australian taxi prices for short trips (as they cannot pick up in other territories and so their charges include the cost of them driving back to their hammock). so you can really rack up expenses if your hotel is a little out of the way and you want to take short trips throughout the day.

    • That's true. Their taxi fares are ridiculous. But they charge that because they can. The place is inhabited predominantly by tourists, and people serving the tourists. Taking advantage of tourists wealth is not new.

Went I went on day tours, the tours themselves were not expensive but they included pick up at hotel and drop off, and also meals.

  • Lets face it, Aussies dont go to Phuket for the beach. Australia has better beaches than anywhere in Asia. You go for a cheap holiday which in my experience you are unlikely to get in Patong. Ping pong balls, razor blades yes. Cheap dinner and drinks no.

I like Thailand (I will be in Bangkok next week) but I dont like Phuket.
