Any Radiologists in The House?

So, I stubbed my toe (pretty decently) yesterday evening whilst out on a run. It’s tender to touch and purple today( all around the nail, sides of toes and a little on the underside. I can’t put much weight on it.

Got some x-rays done, and they said “no new fracture”. Any qualified second opinions?

    It's lupus

    • Off with the head first then?

      • Real talk I wrecked my big toe pretty badly playing soccer - I went for a ball at the same time as another play and we both basically booted each side of the ball at the same time. I ended up having a kind of chip on the bone where the force of the impact pulled the tendons so hard a bit of bone came off where they attached. Hurt like shit for ages and there was nothing they could do.

That's why I aim for the shin, not the ball.

    Wire brush and detol.

What are the realistic alternatives for treatment whether it's broken or not?

      Euthanasia?

      • Glasses. :p

Won't it be rest either way?

Plenty of ice on the toe to help with the bruising and plenty of ice in your Whisky/Brandy to kill the tenderness.

What are the youth in asia going to do?

Yes. Go to another doctor. Not internet strangers.

    • First doctor is correct.

Second doctor may have Monday scalpel itch.

There is evidence of amputation at the level of the base of the proximal phalanx of the 1st toe. The bony margins appear to be
relatively regular with no evidence of any focal lytic changes to suggest infection. No additional bony fractures or lesions are identified. No associated dislocation is seen.

    Dr Random Internet Expert
    Radiologist

    • Please correlate clinically :P

      • What arkie0 is saying is that the OP needs to amputate his 1st toe. I'd recommend a home job so you don't need to take time out to go hospital or see a doctor again.

  • Radiographer ≠ radiologist

    • Thanks.I knew someone would pick up on that err. Fixed.

  • Change title to radiologist.

  • I can't comment on your experience, but while playing squash years ago I suddenly put all my weight onto the big toe and tripped over. It was sore but I continued the game. Next day the entire big toe was purple, very stiff, sore, and I couldn't put any weight on it. Eventually the colour and swelling went away and everything is normal now, but it did take a long time for my affected toe to bend and move like the other.

If in doubt get a second opinion from a doctor.

    • Thanks. I looked at the imaging and though I could see a fracture. Doesn’t make a difference; at least this way I don’t need a moon boot or cast. (I think these are the suggested options when the large toe is broken).

Chances are it's just really badly bruised. Depending on how hard you've managed to hit it, I'd suggest that it's just going to be pretty sore for a little while. If you can, take weight off of it, and rest.

Of course, it's also worth getting a second opinion if you still feel like it's not getting better, but it's early days to expect it to be less sore than if you'd actually broken it.

  • No fracture (from a pragmatic PoV)

Even if there is (which may only be visible in another angle), no reduction needed.

Or we can open it up placed some fixation rods externally and come back a few weeks later to remove it (the toe because we stuffed it royal).

When I broke a bone my GP looked at the original X-rays and said, "it looks okay to me". I then pointed to the fracture on the other side of the radiograph. What confused me is I thought they just read the radiological findings summary like the rest of us.

  • there is no fracture evident, you can relax !!!

      Says this guy.

    it needs to go

no sharp cracks means no acute #s

not a dr but a rad (non qualified opinion) could be nail injury with the bed of vessels underneath (never broke a toe but nail went black and came off from stubbing toe)

not much to do on broken toe anyway unless displaced

    Harden up princess!

    /opinion.

  • +1

if its unduly swollen, purple and you can't fit your show on etc. I recommend leaches. Will get the swelling down real quick

    • +1

Really? How would a real estate agent reduce the swelling?

(I like that autocorrect chose "dwelling" for "swelling")

  • Didn't notice 2nd and 3rd photo.

    No fractures visible.
