  • Bloody hell!! Perfect laptop for me.. except the god damn fricken resolution.. why is it so hard to find a sandy bridge 13" laptop with a higher resolution!!!

    • -1

      because its 13"

      • Someone always says that.. and that's bs. Last generation vaio-z and even 13" macbooks produced high resolution screens, just I need a PC for work and the Z is old and too expensive still anyway..

Just because you don't need a higher resolution on your laptop doesn't mean there aren't a stack of us who do.

Bloody hell, my 10" xoom tablet has a better resolution then this thing.

          "vaio-z and even 13" macbooks"

So, you're comparing over-priced items to a regular netbook? I'm sure I can find a 1080p 10" screen is you're willing to fork out for it…

Fact is, the screen size and resolution provided is the most suitable for the majority of customers. If you don't fit that, then you'll have to pay more or investigate further.

        • This isn't a netbook… and we're talking about resolution here.. heaps of "regular laptops" in the 14" & 15" space come with higher resolutions.

          You've got me curious, Guni.

What 13" notebooks under $1,500 have a higher resolution? Or even 14" ones?

        • Tantryl: New Sony vaio c series and Lenovo T420's… off the top of my head.. i think Toshiba have some as well, but can't remember the model and haven't even looked at Dells yet..

        • The C series is 15.5". Did you mean something else? Or am I missing a sub-model of these?

The T420S isn't out in Aus yet, but getting it shipped from the US would cost around $1400-1500ish all up. Not a bad deal though, a high res sure is a nice option.

        • Looks like the new Sony 'C' series hasn't been released yet in Aus yet either:

Forgive my poor wording, but I'd consider a 13" a 'netbook'. Either way, my points are still valid.

Bringing 14", and even 15", screens into a comparison of resolutions is worse than mine… Of course a larger screen will offer better 'standard' resolutions. Having a hi-res, but small screen, is expensive, hence you will only see it available on higher-end options.

        • Forgive my poor wording, but I'd consider a 13" a 'netbook'. Either way, my points are still > valid."

That's ridiculous.. Netbooks are short for Internet notebooks.. slow processors because they were originally intended to be used primarily for surfing the web. They are almost always coupled with an intel atom chip.

Bringing 14", and even 15", screens into a comparison of resolutions is worse than mine… Of > course a larger screen will offer better 'standard' resolutions. Having a hi-res, but small > screen, is expensive, hence you will only see it available on higher-end options."
          True, but it's not ridiculously hard to produce. We're comparing a 14" to a 13"… we're talking 1 INCH!!!

As i said my $600 xoom 10" has a better resolution then this and you can get even cheaper tablets still. LCD's have come down a lot in pricing, but companies are still insisting on using 1366 x 768 on most laptops. I find it annoying.

You may not and that's your choice and I'm not claiming to be in the majority here either, but I would very much like to see at least some options here.

        • @ ryang
You forget that 13" LAPTOPS have been around well before the 7" then 10.1" netbooks came into existance

          Xoom's resolution is 1280 x 800

          This one is 1366 x 768.

Therefore Xoom's VERTICAL resolution is better but it loses out to the Asus on the HORIZONTAL resolution.

MacBooks (up tll now) have also been 1280 x 800.

          1280x800 = 1,024,000 pixels
          1366 x 768 = 1,049,088 pixels

Therefore the Asus has MORE pixels than either the Xoom or the MacBook.

Don't think this is much of a bargain unless it's a new release model without the Sandy Bridge SATA failure problem. (Intel mentioned 5% failure rate over 3 years)

If it's a new release model why are we stuck in the past with USB2.0 & Bluetooth 2.1! I know we don't use webcams much but a 0.3MP camera seems pretty cheap. Everything else looks alright but a $1000 is a bit steep.

Less on the spec side but similar deal

Also MLN seem to have some better deals, check out their list.

    • centercom sucks and digital star sells it $1100 and not $1200

Harvey Norman had the ASUS N53SV (i7 Sandy Bridge) for $996

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/43892

This isnt a good deal, should be around $800 for it to be a good deal.

    • It's also significantly larger and heavier with a much shorter battery life.

Do a reasonable comparison and I'll remove my positive, but that comparison is just silly.

      • -4

I don't see how 900gm, couple inches more and couple hours more of battery life would be worth $100 more for performance thats probably 70% of the N53SV but each to their own.

        • +1

          your kidding right?… right?

        • 900 grams and hours of battery lifes?? That's basically some laptops right there…

        • "but each to their own"

That's it, pretty much. You can't see a personal use for you for this model. It's not useful to me either. But the majority of the stuff on ozBargain isn't of any use to me - that doesn't factor in to whether or not it's good value though.

        • This machine has an entirely dfferent purpose to the N53SV.

In fact, your post highlights exactly what the differences are SUPPOSED to be.

Although this is a bit overpowered for a 13.3" imho.

On another note, the N53SV was an incredible bargain, and I doubt very many people got one. I wouldn't be using it as a comparison any longer, it's not fair. You can't go get it any more.

A general comment about the resolution: It's what you'd expect. 768 res is always limiting on any machine, even for basic desktop usage, vertical res affects productivity a lot. 900 vertical res should really be a minimum on any laptop, not that we're likely to see that in the near future.

    • I tend to think horizontal is more important, because scrolling sideways sucks.. at least vertically you have a mouse wheel :p

But either way I agree… it needs to increase and it's becoming annoying that companies are sticking with this stupid 1366 x 768 res. Phones are nearly surpassing that res.

  • Hi rep, can you do any ASUS U36JC with 4GB memory for less than $1000? :)
I can get it from bhphotovideo.com for US$1020 delivered.
