I've always wondered, how does zzz atelier, koala etc compare to more mainstream brands like Sealy in terms of support / comfort?

    • +1

We have both an ebay mattress and a Lazybed mattress. Both are comfortable, but the Lazybed is definitely superior in terms of comfort and support. We paid $600 for the Queen Lazybed and around $250 for the eBay one.

    • +3

I'm no mattress connoisseur but I purchased this one 20/02/19 and it arrived in QLD 22/02/19.

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/KING-Mattress-5-Zone-Pocket-Spri…

I let it air for a week, just in a spare room with the window open. Smell was all gone at the end of 7 days.

The one I purchased also has the eurotop which does make it a bit warmer to sleep on. We've got aircon so it's not a big deal however it's something to consider if you don't.

Not really a negative, more of me changing my habbits. I sit on the end of the bed to put my shoes on. The mattress I purchased doesn't have reinforced sides so you sink a fair bit.

Firmness is always hard to quantify however the GF said she prefers a mattress on the firmer side. Yet after using the Zzz for 3 nights, she is very happy with it.

      Tldr; it's a 5/7 for the price.

    • +2

I haven't actually slept on mine yet (you will find a ton of people who will be able to chime in on that), but I looked a lot into mattresses before I bought my Zzz Atelier and it looks to be exceptional value for the money. I wouldn't lump the Zzz Atelier with the foam styles like Koala because Zzz Atelier uses pocket springs. This is much more like your "standard" mattress than a foam version. You will also on average pay a lot more for foam, which I saw a lot of people complain that the foam styles were too warm.

I found it difficult to find consistently good reviews for the "mainstream" brands like I could for Zzz Atelier. The price makes this a no-brainer to try, it was delivered very quickly, feels very comfortable, and the only issue I typically see is that the edge support isn't very strong which seems to be the case for all mattresses delivered by box.

    • +3

Sealy etc are expensive for no reason other to make money. Choice did a great review showing that most bedding companies are just a single parent company, and they use these brands to drive up prices. Often cost price is up to 80% of final value. Many $3000 mattresses they reviewed by King/Sealy etc were similar in quality and function as $500 ebay mattresses. Also the Sealy/King mattresses were not quality assured, and some even had rust in the frame on arrival.

Really interesting stuff! If you are actually interested, you should grab latest choice magazine and do some web searching. There are many types of mattresses, and koala for instance is all foam, while zzz atelier is springs and foam, same as Sleeping Duck.

One key thing about all foam mattresses, is their ability to remove partner disturbance when you are moving around. This improved my sleep 100% alone.

    • +3

I cannot compare them .. after all you don't tend to buy a few mattresses all at once. But I love my ZZZ so much that in last week's Melbourne heatwave I elected to sleep in the bedroom rather than joining my family camping in the air-conditioned lounge.

Support is fantastic (I need a lot!)

  • +2

Amazing mattress. I'm bought one of those last year and a mate as well the thing is just amazing.

    • Yes I got one nearly 12 months ago and it's great.

  • Postage to Hobart with ebay plus is $68 :(

  • +1

Anyone tried the bed frames before?

    • +3

I'm curious about this too, looking to buy the ensemble base.

    • I just bought one, I will see how it goes.

    • +1

bought it last sale, pretty good and easy to asemble. just remember to charge you drill for the last part otherwise a bit tedious work to screw it.

    • The basic bed base looks good and meets Zzz Atelier's requirements on slats. I'd be willing to roll the dice on one of the queen size bases in a dark colour but they appear to be out of stock of all the larger frames.

  • +2

I got the king size mattress from these guys and this bed frame from
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/QUEEN-DOUBLE-KING-Size-Bed-Base-…

    No complaints so far

    • +1

Ditto. Bought the same bed frame. Super simple to clip all the sides in :)

  • +1

I've had my zzz atelier mattress for 1.5 years now, and it's starting to lose its firmness. Also, there's no edge support for those who are interested.

Great for an inexpensive mattress, but I think I will be changing within the next 2 years or so.

    • +4

15 year guarantee though. Why not follow that up?

      • From post description:
15-Year manufacturer limited warranty. *Please read manufacturer warranty information (available on Zzz Atelier website) for terms and conditions of warranty.

      • Exactly what Gaggy said.

        • Gaggy said limited warranty, what is the limited warranty that bad that it doesn't include a defective product?

          • @onlinepred: It's not defective, mattress firmness is not included in the cover.

            This warranty does not cover:

Wear and tear of mattress fabric or stitching.
Handles (where fitted) - these should be used only to position the mattress and should not be used to support the full weight of the mattress.
Border wires, which run along the perimeter of the mattress (innerspring) and foundation, bent due to moving or folding the sleep set.
            Bedding sold 'As Is'
            Comfort layer and materials
            Bed Height.
            Mattress firmness
            Mattress noise
Mattress damage due to an inappropriate foundation or bed frame.
Minor manufacturing anomalies that do not impact the performance of the bed (eg. mis-stitching on quilting).
Damage due to misuse, abuse or neglect negligence including folding, bending, standing on or jumping on the mattress or base.
Conditions arising from normal wear and tear including mattress cover compression, foam compression or discolouration of components.
A mattress or base that, on inspection by Zzz Atelier is found to be stained or in an unsanitary condition.
Bent or broken castors or legs, loose T-nuts inside the base, caused by castor legs not having been kept sufficiently tight or other broken fittings caused by poor maintenance.

            • +1

@7am: Oh man that's terrible. No wonder it's cheap.

    • out of curiosity, after having zzz atelier, would you pay $1000+ for a better one that may last maybe 10yr? or you would prefer to pay 4 * 250 = $1000 for zzz atelier and change it every 3-4 yrs, so you get 12-16 yrs and new mattresses periodically (also possibly newer better design)?

      • Prior to my zzz atelier mattress, I had a $1000~ mattress for more than 8 years that served me well. I've only had this zzz atelier mattress for 1.5 years and its losing support, giving me back pain and the edge support is lacking. Great to start off with, but quickly declined after a year.

Personally, I would spend the $1000 and get something that would last longer as I don't want the hassle of changing every 2 years or so. That's my thought though.

  • Bought one last week for $233 or something like that.

So far so good. Would recommend.

    Nice and firm.

  • No doubles :(

    • They always relist stock throughout the day, so you shouldn't have to wait long to order.

  • I bought one a few weeks ago.

    So far, reasonably good.

The regular mattress is, in my opinion, on the firm side of things.

There is some sag on the very corners of the mattress, but the edges are perfectly fine.

  • Good mattress, I bought a Koala before and found it gave me a sore back. Changed to this and it's gone.

  • How do these compare to the ones from Ozplaza Living?

  • Ordered the slat bed from them on 22/2 ten days ago and still waiting for delivery!!!!

The estimated delivery was 27/2 to 28/2, but was only picked up from them by driver on 1/3 FTW???.

The product may be good but if you need it in a hurry try and pick it up from their depot yourself.

I picked up the matress from North Sunshine tbe next day but it's sitting on the floor waiting for the bed.

  • been using a King size for the last week so far so good. As others have mentioned not much support on the edges which doesn't bother me

  • Amazing bed, I got the ultra firm one a few weeks ago. Replaced my Ecosa one which gives me back pain.

  • +1

I've had a $3k mattress (lasted several tears) and a $1k one, both King. Not great… But I can't get myself to get one this cheap, surely you get what you pay for… I'm not suggesting in anyway to get a $7k Sealy or something stupid but it freaks me out a little if it's toooo cheap.

    • +2

we bought this mattress (during last round of sales) for the guest's room to replace our 5.5 years old mattress from the box (which sagged a bit with time and some moving with us from one place to another), this (ZZZ) looks and feels like a really good quality mattress, we even slept on it for a couple of weeks to see how it performs. So, it is not firm, in my opinion, and definitely soft on edges when you sit on it, but it is really comfortable to sleep on. I much more prefer our main mattress, as it much firmer and have firm edges, but that one we choose after laying in all mattresses in retails shops (we bought ours in Furniture Outlet, Dandenong) and it cost a bit over $1k (i.e. 4 times more), so it will be weird to compare it to ZZZ, as nobody compares different classes, as it would be silly, to compare Toyota Camry to Audi A6 (in comfort and features)… To sum up, this is a really nice product, especially considering its cost :)

      • +1

I don't think you can make an accurate review until you've slept on it and used it for months, and even then it needs to last atleast a few years.

Im sure it's great value, but unfortunately time is the only real test to these. As a spare… Awesome.

        • sure, it will be great to sleep on it at least a couple of years, but I doubt there are many people with this experience here, but the same is with any other mattress :)

          • @Ametric: Don't get me wrong Im not questioning what you wrote, just a hard thing to know or understand unless you've had it. Each to their own with these sorta things. I'd wanna try it before I buy it.

            • @scuderiarmani: Absolutely agree, that why I mentioned that we bought it for our spare room (hence didn't bother with all the tests), but reading plenty of positive reviews was feeling quite confident, and after sleeping on it a couple of weeks, can confirm those people didn't lie :)

  • No queen size either :(

    • +1

      Back in stock :)

  • Do they do a extra firm in the queen size i had a look on there ebay site but could not see any.

    • I messaged them last time they were out of stock (queen size firm) and they put more stock on ebay.

  • It was $204 (double )few months ago and free delivery but for around $250 ley you have a queen base and mattress you dont have any choose really

  • Ah man I bought on Sunday for $323.10 for the king mattress :( Same mattress is $287.20 now with that coupon.

Did eBay have a price protection policy of sorts? I'm an eBay Plus member if that counts for anything.

  • Do they have any recommended models that have the edge supports?

  • I got the Queen Eurotop a while ago, it is an alright mattress but eventually I started to get really achy after sleeping on it. My wife said it was fine though.

I just couldn't deal with it anymore and went and got a much firmer Sealy. The Zzz is now the spare room mattress.

IMHO for the price it is worth trying out. It may work better for you, I am over 100kgs so maybe that is why it does not work for me.

  • As it has a latex top, does getting too warm become a problem with these?

    • I bought a Coolmax mattress protector due to heat issues with latex and with that, I have found it to be fine, haven't tried it without though.

  • Was interested in getting this until i read all the comments saying how warm it becomes due to the foam

I am a very light sleeper and dont sleep well in the heat, are there any mattress brands/types out there that are specially designed to stay cool?

  • anyone know if i can try these out in a store in sydney?

    • When I contacted them directly few years ago, they allowed me to access their storage site (Sydney West) to take a look at one that was already open and out. Not sure if they've moved since or would allow this anymore

      • thanks

  • This or the aldi mattress coming up?

    • +7

      These are backed by ozbargain

      • Officially or just the flavor of the month. Many comments on long term seem to say they sag.

    • +1

Aldi mattresses won't be as comfortable as these (less cushioning).

  • I bought an OzMattress Grandmaster, never looked back.

These eBay mattress look decent for the price, but I wouldn't personally risk it. I've already got lower back issues, and a bad mattress can make things worse.

Unfortunately, no idea who makes quality mattresses anymore.

Ergo-Plex I believe looked decent last time I checked, however they're around 1k

  • I am looking for extra firm. Is there anything different from the one in below link when compared the the posted ones here besides firmness ?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/142043158305?ul_noapp=true

    • +3

You lose the eurotop that's found on the regular, medium firm "black label". The eurotop adds a bit of softness and give to an already somewhat firm mattress.

If you are indeed after an extra firm mattress I don't think you will be disappointed in the extra firm/super firm version, although it is definitely not for everyone.

  • Are there any side sleepers lurking in comments, who would happily buy this bed again?

    Side/edge support concerns me

    • +2

Yep, I sleep on the edge of the bed in my 30cm allocation (wife gets the rest) and I sleep well on the mattress. The edge doesn't sag. Will be buying a few more for the rest of the family as they prefer our mattress :)

      Mine is Queen.

    • I also sleep on my side and love this mattress. The softer edges are only a problem when you sit on it.

  • How do they deliver these? Are they a courier company who calls to plan a delivery time when you will be home, or just a luck based get or collect from a depot scenario?

    • +1

Mine was delivered by a courier company and they just turned up. Don't remember if I was informed of the delivery date via tracking.

  • Hey guys,

How come I can't see the price drop for queen size at $228.65 as posted ? I am seeing $269 instead ?

    • You need to enter the voucher code PLUSMORE on checkout.

  • +3

Great mattress. My main mattress is $3k and this rivals it (although much firmer). No point buying a more expensive mattress unless you want super plush

  • Singles are no longer in stock.

  • +2

I bought one of the about 18 months ago and it has already started to lose its firmness. Maybe it will last another 12 months and then I will need to replace with something built for greater longevity. If you don’t care for the environment and don’t care about excess waste going to landfill then by all means go and get yourself one of these mattresses. IMO not such a bargain if it only lasts 2 years.

I looked up the 15 year warranty exclusions and it basically covers nothing. There is effectively no warranty on this product. When I contacted them they had little interest and I quickly gave up.

    • This can sometimes be caused by the base. Have you put it on the floor to see how it performs on a solid base.

  • +1

I got this bed delivered yesterday (ordered on the weekend) even though it was scheduled for Thursday delivery. Anyway it looks great in person, looks like a far more premium mattress and it's pretty firm. Had my first sleep on it and I have zero complaints, it's super comfortable and for $300 it's insanely good value. I honestly think I'd be needing to spend $1500+ to get anything better and the improvements would only be marginal. I have no idea how it would compare to a koala mattress or those types but they are also 1k more.

Couldn't be happier with the purchase. I read a lot about weak "edge" support but I still don't know wtf that means. I can sleep right up to the edge and I feel fine and I'm a big heavy guy.

I did get the "5 zone" version.

    • +1

      what does 5 zone mean?
Both versions are described as '5 zone'

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/QUEEN-Mattress-5-Zone-Pocket-Spr…
Seems to have the same specs, but more expensive …..

      • +2

It means the bed/springs is split into zones so different parts of your body have different support.

I don't know if it's better or worse than the non-5 zone version but I got the 5 zone and I've had it for 3 nights now and absolutely love it.

  • Not an option any more anyway since all but King Single sold out, but was wondering if anyone could compare these to the Aldi Mattress in a box coming this weekend?

  • All sizes are now back in stock.

  • Does anyone know if you can get an ebay plus free trial if you have already had one on that account?

    • +1

Just open a new ebay account

  • Ordered on Tuesday, mine arrived today! I'm still yet to open it since I've got to set up my space, but so far so good.

  • +3

My king size mattress arrived after two day of purchasing(ebay 6/3). However, the courier Hunter Express delivered the uncompressed mattress in a box with a tear on the box the also tore through the mattress. I have messaged the company through ebay but it will. Be a few hours until they reply. The courier placed the box on the ground such the massive rip. Was visible at first.

For those interested, it wasn't a signed parcel.

  • Can a Zzz Atelier associate please indicate when/if the basic bed frame will be back in stock in the larger sizes?
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Queen-Double-King-Single-Ens…

  • +1

Thanks OP bought one! Any suggestion for a bed frame not too low and a quilt plus cover & sheets? :)

    • +2

Read above there is a recommendation for a base. You could even do a word search. I have the Target 500 thread count sheets ($35 for king) and they fit well in King. I like them better than the 1000 count ones. I got my Quilt covers from the Sheridan outlet they have good sales regularly, $25 voucher on your birthday and 10% off for Uni students.

  • Could anyone explain why there are items listed which have exactly the same specs but have different pricing?
