  • Is RAM upgradable?

  • +9

No 4K resolution, 16GB RAM or 512GB SSD. Literally unusable. /s

  • What's the advantage over the XPS 15" over something like the G5 Gaming, presuming same RAM/STORAGE/GTX1050 options?

    • +4

Small, thin, loud coil whine so you dont lose it, throttles every 5 min

      better screen too

      • +3

Been hearing a lot of people mention the coil whine issue; we have 15+ Xps13 and 4 Xps15 at work and none of them have the coil whine issue.

        • Its really the luck of the draw, my 9560 has no coil whine but my last two XPS 13s had it bad.

          • @WhiskeyBurn: What causes coil whine? Bad design/engineering, bad components or a bit of both?

        • +1

You would have to have a major fault to hear it in a normal office.
Its more the kind of thing you hear if you have the laptop next to your head going to sleep at night.

    • Definitely the weight as well

    • this particular xps 15 has the 97whr battery too whereas the newer G5 gaming laptops have only the 60whr battery. Can get a full day of work done on this provided I dont use anything intensive aka CAD programs.

      Although you can get a g5 with a 2060 and 8750H for $1600.

      • Where do you see a g5 with 2060 and 8750h for 1600?

      • +1

A 2060 for $1600? That would be awesome - link?

        • exactly, i woudl totally get that as well with 8750h!

          • @zt38: my bad lads, I was somehow rerouted to the American website.

Aussie dell site lists the 2060 model at $2600.

    • Don't know bout this version but I bought the newest one back in 2017 and then returned it due to experiencing throttling.

      • my i5-8300h model also throttled until I repasted

    • +1

XPS is a ultrabook which is thin and portable. G5 is a heavy and thick to carry everywhere.

  • New 2019 model coming ~June. Will definitely have a better screen. Rumors are that Dell are sourcing the newly announced Samsung OLED.

    • Pretty sure Dell confirmed the 9580 will have OLED and will be released in April 2019

      • +3

Then you can complain about burn in as well as coil whine.

        • Could be an issue but don't think burn in was an problem for the X1 Yoga OLED that's been around since 2017

  • XPS 15 vs MS surface book 2. Which one is the better one?

    • +1

Surface Book 2 every day of the week, but it's hard to compare when a similar Surface Book will cost around $3000+.

  • My only complaint is that it only has 8GB ram.

  • 4K only in the 2-in-1s, which are…I mean…the only way to describe their prices is as an error, or maybe a joke?

  • Has anyone got any better suggestions of a laptop with 2 x USB C ports that is still high performance and looks great, (screen clarity is important) and still affordable? I was looking at the 2 in1 1 15 XPS but I think even with the discounts it's overpriced.

    • If you can get away with the Nvidia MX150 graphics card, I'd be looking at the Huawei Matebook X Pro personally. The screen is stunning. There's a refresh coming soon with an MX250 graphics card as well, but may not be worth the wait as it's an incremental update.

any suggestions for a laptop under $1000….. with touch screen option? just fro everyday use. nothing fancy. thanks

  • 2x2 wireless isn't fast

  • +1

any other comparable laptops with a 1060 or 2060 ultrabook build and battery life?

  • +1

Hmmmmmmm…. reckon it is worth cancelling my order for a G3 and swapping over to one of these? Link for specs

    • If the top comment is to be believed, the G3 has a 210 nit screen….. that's incredibly dim compared to the XPS at 410 or any laptop I know of. That alone would make me avoid it.

  • +1

yep i have cancelled my order for the G3 and changed to the XPS15. thanks ozbargain :)

How do experts think this compares to the other deal which to a layman seems to have better specs in general for almost $500 less . Thanks in advance!

You are paying more for xps model and good looks. If you are happy to use Inspiron, then go for it. This i5 is 2018 release and i7 is not necessarily always better, it depends on individual benchmark.

      • +1

Thanks wolfpack - ended up getting the i5 to save some money. Yeah I do like the looks of the XPS and bigger battery size!

  • Is anyone experience long estimated shipping times? Even though it is based in Sydney? My estimated delivery dates goes up to early April :(

Was wondering if anyone else had the same experience?
