    • Linda Blair returned with interest.

Are there ever any cool deals one way to the USA? (We're going in August but not coming back for at least a year…)

    • +1

Best solution is to buy FF points, which should come out about 500-600 including taxes.

One option to try might be to have a look at Jetstar to Hawaii and then try Domestic US to the mainland. If I'm not mistaken Southwest (IMO the best American carrier) recently launched flights to Hawaii.

Got into a very similar deal last year, just remember to checkout the exorbitant hotel prices before booking the flight.

Be prepared to see nothing under $350/night.

San Francisco is the has the dearest average hotel price/night, worldwide.

Note nothing against the OP, great flight prices!

true that, however there are heaps of decent Airbnb all over the Bay. We've stayed 3 nights in a boat — anchored. Quite the experience tbh

    Few things from memory:
Yes hotels are expensive, Hostels are the best for solo travelers.

If you are taking big bus - do google search you find a promo code for 10-20% off.

Alcatraz guided tours gets book well in advanced. only self guided tours available for same day or next day.

  • Would recommend looking at The Urban for accommodation - close to most things, close to public transport and <$250AUD/night (even less if you're happy with a shared bathroom). I know it's not for everyone but it's clean and cheap.

Didn't Qantas ordered a lot of Boeing new models…

    • +2

No need to worry. Qantas has no 737 MAX. However, Virgin has ordered some. But none are in service yet in Aus.

      • I appreciate the info.

      • plus the B737MAX dont have the legs to fly nonstop from Sydney to San Francisco for example.

  • Good night sweet AUD

Worst flight to USA using Qantas…would never use Qantas for long flight like this.

    • Why?

      • +4

old airplane, headphone jack doesn't work properly so you can't enjoy watching the entertainment, small leg space, old and rude flight attendants, bad food and many other reasons.

All above are there if you fly economic class though.

        • B787 flights from Melbourne. Only a matter of time before the B744s on the Sydney leg are replaced too

    • +2

      United is even worst!
I think Virgin is the best flight to US.

    • +2

When do the 787's start servicing this route?
      Looks like September for MEL-SFO

  • Good Cheap flights, It is a shame about the hotel prices, some want more per night than what the flight is worth.

What plane does Qantas use?? Not really a bargain if they use the new 737

    • +2

I didn't realise Boeing had turned the 737 into a long haul aircraft.

      • B744 on flights from Sydney and B787 on flights from Melbourne.

  • Any reason the September - October period isnt included? is it holidays then or some other event?

    • School holidays in the eastern states late September/early October

      • Really? I thought schools only just returned from the long summer break

  • Can I upgrade these seats using my Qantas FF points?

    • These are discount economy tickets, so wont be able to.
