    • Telstra?

  • Signed up for this same deal in January, can now stream some games on optus sports

FYI I did chat with Telstra today as an existing customer and got the $49 60GB after escalating to a supervisor claiming it’s unfair for loyal customers.

    • Did they restart the contract term? ie another 12 months, or carrying from your current contract?

      • I did this in the past.
        They restart the 12 months.

      • Yes reset another 12 months. But i was only 1 month in anyway.

    • I was able to do the same, however, they would not do it over the phone for me, I was able to get it done with Live Chat

I just used the loyal customer line too

      Cheers

I have discussed with this my supervisor and convinced my supervisor to give you same deal.
I will change your plan to $49.00 per month with 60 Gb data per month and unlimited calls and texts with international calling to 15 eligible 15 countries.

      • +2

Yeah clearly they will do it if you escalate.

I also gave them some friendly 'feedback' that Telstra is on a path to nowhere by alienating existing customers from the same deals as new customers, it's a bad look and seriously diminishes any good will with long time customers.

Anyone have experience with speeds on Telstra after you have gone through your data cap with Peace of Mind? It says up to 1.5Mbps.

Can one still use Skype/Google Maps/etc?

    • +1

These apps are OK. But youtube or netflix will very slow.

      • -1

I stream 720p netflix with optus free Netflix quota @ 1.5Mbps and haven't had an issue on a 40inch screen

  • Pablo Escobar needs free calls to Colombia

  • I got to the end of the form and it says 'what you pay after discounts' = $59 per month and only 30GB data, ehh!?

EDIT: New services only. okie dokie. I had entered my existing Optus number for transfer across = not eligible

  • I re-contracted for 12 months at JB yesterday for the $45 50gb plan. Is there a possibility to upgrade to this plan, given it’s been less than a day?

    • There shouldn't be an early termination.
      From the Telstra website:

      Increasing your plan inclusions
If you change to a higher plan in the same plan family, for example, from a $95 Go Mobile plan to a $135 Go Mobile plan, there are no additional costs.

      • Cheers! I managed to get this $49 60gb via chat for an existing customer. I was told the discount is no longer valid after 12 months, but I can re-contract just before it expires, if I choose to remain with telstra etc.. Good deal imo if you’re already with telstra.

        • That's odd, that the discount is only for 12 months. Usually it's for the full term, ie, until you cancel or recontract. That's usually the same with the extra data etc

          • @Spending2Much: Yeah, I was told the same thing when 1.5 years ago, but kept rolling over. Who knows, I’ll confirm closer to the end of the 12m. I’m happy with it now and sure we can negotiate something online when the day comes.

  • Funnily I was sitting in the Telstra shop about to port my number across to this plan for $59/m then I saw the Online Only special for $49! Perfect timing!

    $69/m 30GB
    +30GB bonus
    -$10 New Service Special
    -$10 Online Special

    Total:
    $49/m for 60GB

I just went into my local JB. They are still offering $45 /month with 50GB data and $200 gift card for port ins.

I asked when it ends and they told me it's pretty much an ongoing thing. The Huawei P20 24 month contract was also available.

    • are they offering the same deal as telstra + gift card ?

      • The $49 $60GB plan? Nope.

They said Telstra have been doing this for a while and it's not new. It looks like Telstra just takes the deal away and brings it back, on and off. So I wouldn't be too hopeful of them updating their deals to match in the near future either.

  • how long do i need to port out of telstra to get this deal.

PS: This is stupid i even have to do this…but, they make us game them

  • Hey guys - any real world experiences on using a connection like this as your primary internet connection at home? (for a single person with a housemate)

I pay $59pm for my 10Mbit ADSL2 connection and will be getting NBN soon (50Mbps for $79pm).

    I currently pay $40pm on Boost pre-paid.

Figured for $49pm I could combine both, although I imagine I'd need to constantly turn on my personal hotspot on/off (or at least connect to it manually from my Apple TV and PS4).

Main devices used at home are my iPad, laptop, TV (Netflix), PS4, Apple TV).

Seems like I could get a big speed boost!!

    • +1

There are a few things to consider here.

Your ping will most likely likely be higher, which will affect gaming. However, when I do a speedtest at home, my Telstra 4G has a ~20ms ping which shouldn't be a problem to game on. In contrast, my Optus NBN has a ping of ~10ms.

Data usage is another concern. There is no possible way I'd get by on 60GB for all home use + mobile. I'd advise you look into how much you use per month. If you don't do a lot of downloading and you don't use a lot of data, then ask yourself what will the extra speed/bandwidth will do for you? I regularly get 90-100Mbps on Optus NBN, but there are very few use cases that actually utilise the full bandwidth. Utilising a full 100Mbps download speed will use up 60GB in about 1.5 hours.

Also, you need to keep in mind that your phone will have a limited amount of devices it can hotspot to, and those devices will not have the full 4G speed anyway. They will be limited to the wifi capabilities of your phone/the device itself.

      • Thanks for the response!! Good question. I have tried to check with TPG however all I get is 'Usage not collected for the period 2019-02-28 to 2019-03-27'.

I used to use a lot but these days it's just streaming YouTube (mainly) and iTunes Movies / Netflix (2-3 per month).

It's the updates that kills me - it's very common for a PS4 game to have an 8GB patch just to play, which is annoying when you sit down to play something that evening but then can't.

Actually - you just reminded me - I downloaded 'For Honor' PS4 game the other day on PS Plus - I think that was 60GB or something ridiculous… I played it for an hour and probably won't play it again.

The other concern I thought of was prematurely using my phones battery if it was a constant hotspot. I know on Optus you can get an extra SIM and share the data (and use a pocket Wifi device) but I'm unsure if you can with Telstra.

        • +2

To be honest, I don't see this as being a good option.

My advice would be to get a cheaper plan for your phone, with less data. And put the savings towards your NBN connection.

You should also shop around for a better NBN deal. I managed to get Optus to give a free speedpack and an addition $35/month discount on top when they switched us over to NBN. I had been a customer for over 10 years though - and their cable service that I was previously on had severely degraded as they began to rollout NBN.

I think in the end, if you shop around a bit your savings aren't going to be all that significant - because the NBN cost will be shared with your housemate too. You might save $10 or so per month, but for a far worse experience.

Like you said, you downloaded a game on the PS4 and that was 60GB alone. Even when you buy a game on a disk these days, you are likely required to download a very large update before you can play. You will be constantly finding yourself in situations where you have to say "Can't update this game until next month" or "No more Netflix this month". Plus, you have your phone's batter life and degradation to consider.

Data share sims are possible on Telstra, but they're not free. You pay I believe $5 a month for the extra sim.

          • @Harold Halfprice: Thanks again.

I raised a service request with TPG and got my monthly usage….220GB - 250GB per month!!!

Wowsers. So much for my 'light usage', esp on my slow 10Mbit connection. I'm with you - I think I'll stick with separate connections.

Best I could get with a no-contract 50Mpbs unlimited NBN deal was Aussie Broadband, $79pm with $20 discount for the first 6 months (i.e. $59pm x 6 months, then I'll have to see what else is out there at that point). TPG 50Mbit unlimited was $69pm but with an 18 month contract (or +$99 without).

We're renters so the no contract was important.

I would stay with TPG if they'd give us $59 ongoing, maybe I should ask - have been a customer for 15+ years.

    • There’s no way two people will use less than 60Gb per month, especially with all those devices.

      • I'd have my housemate use his own (I'd recommend this or the $45 JB 50GB plan). He'd also save $30 on our home connection and perhaps pay $10 more per month on his mobile plan.

Also - our apartment is a very solid old build and the WiFi doesn't reach the bedrooms well (where we use mobile data sometimes).

        • +1

If you think you could keep under 60GB, it's extremely viable as a home internet connection assuming you have a good phone that has a strong wifi hotspot signal and you can keep under 60GB per month.

Only you can tell how much data you're using, but 60GB seems too low for someone using 'iPad, laptop, TV (Netflix), PS4, Apple TV).'

    • I'm currently considering your idea of using mobile data as the primary internet service at home. Found this following on Whirlpool which may be of interest to you: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2648294

You'll see that there's someone with a TP-LInk 3G/4G Wireless Router + Optus Huawei USB modem setup. If you went down this route, you can do away with using your phone as a hotspot. The post is nearly 2 years old so there may be advances in modems/routers which can take a SIM card. Can anyone comment on this setup?

  • so I get 60gb a month unlimited calls and text with Telstra for $59 a month.. contract goes for another 6 months.. any way to get this? extra $10 a month is ludacris

    • Some of the messages above answer this.

  • I'm paying $39 for a $49 plan with 30GB. I didn't want to pay more than that, and they weren't willing (even after escalation to a supervisor) to give me the new 60GB plan for $39. They did, however, offer me another $5 on my existing plan, without altering my existing contract.

So now I've got 35GB for $39. I only really use a few gigs a month, so that's a decent deal for me.

  • For anyone interested in this plan, it is pretty easy to get an extra 5GB per month by asking via Online Chat.

  • The terms & conditions state:

"If you have an $89 plan, your Plan includes the International Roaming allowances described above. If you have a $49 or $69 plan you have an International Day Pass activated, which for an 𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙜𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙧 𝙙𝙖𝙮 lets you make and receive unlimited standard voice calls and text and includes 200MB data for use each day (AEST) when travelling in Eligible Roaming Destinations. If you use more than your included data allowance on your International Day Pass, we will automatically add extra data to your service in blocks of 500MB for $10."

Does anyone know what the additional charge is?

    • $10 per day. It is called the International Day Pass.

  • Stupid question perhaps, but is there anyway to link this type of plan to something that’ll also cover a phone via monthly repayment? Getting $100pm phone allowance in next job & struggling to find a good match to help me finally move on from my faithful SE.

    • Yes you can. You can ask Telstra to add a device plan to it.

  • Good plan. Currently I get 30GB, unlimited call/text all for only $21/month
