Autopilot $2000 | Full Self-Driving $3000 (Prices Rising to $4000 & $7000 Respectively from 18/3) @ Tesla

2681

Those that purchased a Tesla Model S in the recent deal may want to consider upgrading the Autopilot and Full Self-Driving functionalities before they go back to their original price ($4000 and $7000 respectively) on Monday 18/3.

Tesla is also canceling the discounts on Autopilot and Full Self Driving when the new prices go into effect on Monday, March 18th. All of this forces an ultimatum onto owners.

Before the pricing change, the combined Autopilot and Full Self Driving solution was $8,000 if purchased with the vehicle or $11,000 if acquired after purchase. The reduced pricing allowed owners to buy Autopilot for half price ($2,000) and Full Self-Driving for $3,000. That represents a sweet discount on packages that have only gone up in price in recent months as Tesla continued to fine tune the pricing.

The lucrative offer is clearly convincing owners to pull the trigger on the upgrade, with the hard cutoff date on Monday making the decision even more urgent, as evidenced by numerous anecdotal stories from forums around the web and social media.

@subboy: I hear you get a lot of overtime :0

              • @subboy: Not what I hear at all, I hear you all scam the system to get reduiculous OT pay and we all pay for it in the most expensive public transport costs in the world.

                • +1

@pistachio1: I will agree the price is ridiculous, but thats translink, not QR. as for scamming the system.. that is not happening at all (although a certain QR hater in the courier mail would love people to believe this).
There is some OT to be had, however that comes from a certain party putting a hold on training and removing trainers from their positions, even though the kippa line was in sight with no plan for the extra drivers and trains we would need for that alone .. just went down hill from there.
in recent times more people have become qualified drivers (that is at least 12 months per person in training) .. at the same time we are losing drivers for many reasons (eg retirement).
But it is not all OT and glamour.. we are meant to have an annual leave quota at 15% on any 1 day, QR continue to keep it at 10% which means most of us are finding it hard to get leave (which is not healthy), and as extra services, events and so on, well, the OT again is there at times.. we are certainly not always getting OT (individually). but at the moment OT is needed to keep all the services running, and with that said rather than looking from the outside as that being a negative, look at the reality that people are giving up their days off with family and friends to help QR and its customers.
                  Things are slowly getting better.
But again no scamming (although if there was a way, let me know haha)

          No he would not.

If he gave away all of their schematics for all their cars/rockets/etc, other companies would build clones for a lot cheaper since they will have paid nothing for R+D. Tesla/SpaceX/etc would go fold, and then there would be no scientific progression.

That's debatable - there's plenty of open source success stories, but yeah, it's a different business model to how car manufacturers operate at the moment.

            • @salmon123: If Tesla released the exact designs for their new car, China would have a clone out within the month. LOL. God bless you china.

They might - but it probably wouldn't hurt telsa's sales one bit. Telsa markets itself as a luxury product. People want and pay for the original. It's in the same category as iPhones and LV handbags, plenty of Chinese knockoffs available.

Heck, you don't even need a schematic of an LV handbag, a photo is enough to start producing them.

You don't understand who pays for research. Generally speaking, it isn't big business. It's the Government and higher educational institutions such as universities that the public gets ripped off that pay for research while corporations such as Tesla take the profits.

That's not to say Tesla isn't taking large risks but research is not one of them.

            • +2

Possibly true in Australia (and other countries where the majorities of universities are publicly funded), but then the research output in Australia is pretty low to begin with.

I tend to think big business does to a fair amount of research in the US.

            • +2

@Diji1: I agree that universities do do a large amount of research, but I think you will find that big corporations are paying for that research. I'm sure a fair amount comes from the government, but certainly not all.

And there is a big difference between general scientific research, say building a new type of rocket propulsion in a lab environment, and building for a real world application.

        • Not replying to anyone specifically… but I remember going to a presentation where the speaker (from UK industry I believe) was explaining that historically when government funded research was reduced private sector research increased. I can't recall if it just increased or actually increased to a level higher than the public funded research.

As others have mentioned, there is a difference between pure and applied research and also between research and product development. People often suggest that the private sector wouldn't do pure research. Of course, hard to say because currently it is government funded (so free to corps) but there are some large companies that do pure research.

There's open source work being done on other cars which is "about on par with Tesla Autopilot and GM Super Cruise, and better than all other manufacturers". This person (not me) has been using it in Australia with great success.

      • +2

Yep - works with Holden Astra as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHFx5NM7gkY&t=

      • +5

Definitely not on par with autopilot. Autopilot is next level, 8 cameras, radar, ultrasonics and super advanced object recognition. Autopilot is constantly evolving and the latest iteration is miles ahead of other manufacturers.

    • -7

No you still need a Tesla car.

No point buying this unless you have a Tesla car.

      • +4

        So you’re saying I don’t need a Tesla car?

      • +17

So what you’re saying is I need to buy a Tesla car and only then I can use this with my Toyota Corolla?

Wondering if anyone did purchased a Tesla through that post 😆

Damn it I want to buy it but I don’t even have the car yet!!

  • +1

    Nah I'm good

  • Just a dumb question from me, if there is a lot of traffic on the road, does the autopilot system helps to filter lanes to arrive destinations faster? thanks….

    • I can only talk to autopilot but it will change lanes only after you hit the indicator. Self-driving is pretty far away based on my experience with autopilot. However, for long drives on segregated highways it's tough to beat.

      • -1

Nope, on Navigate on Autopilot, in the latest update, it will change lanes by itself, after you've put the destination into the nav. No need for driver input, on ramp to offramp. This isn't available in Australia yet, but the ability for the car to change lanes with no prompting has been rolling out in the USA since last week.

    • -1

No, it's just like Google Assistant. You can get it to turn off your oven you've preheated because of traffic.
"Ok Google, charge my Tesla" and it drives over to the charging port.
      (/s)

    • Only if fitted to a motorcycle.

    • Once you have autopilot you don't feel the need to keep changing lanes
