  • Self installable?

    • -5

      Self research

    • +10

      No, needs connection to mains

    • +4

nope requires an electrician to install

    • +5

      if you're an electrician

      • If not, you'll soon be a bright spark

    • -2

      Maybe.

In WA no license is required "to the affixing of a plug, electrical appliance plug or
cord extension socket to a flexible cord used or intended to be used to connect an electrical appliance, portable sub-distribution board or residual current device to a plug socket outlet through which electricity is supplied or to be supplied at a nominal pressure not exceeding 1 000 volts alternating current or 1 500 volts direct current".

If you have a suitable socket already installed by a licensed electrician, you may be able to use this charger without calling the electrician out again. Different states have different rules, some might require to hard-wire equipment like this.

      • +1

It doesn’t have a flexible cord to affix a plug to, so even in WA it wouldn’t be legal.

      • Rather not electrocute myself or have my house burn down

        • Says the sparky … :-|

    • Ninja joke? Thought it was funny. If it was intended - virtual high 5!

    • yep if you are a trained electrician you can install it yourself. its either that or you get electrocuted for trying.

    • +4

      Find out yourself

      • -6

        How?

    • Could be, I've got one and it's not that big a unit.

    • +6

      Yes, its free delivery.

  • Can I take it off when I move house?

    • +2

Better off buying a umc portable charger

      • -7

        🤣

    • +2

You could but you'll probably need a sparky to disconnect safely. They're usually installed with a local isolator though, but if you did remove the charger, it would also need to be safely "capped" so if the isolator was switched back on, there's no risk of electrocution due to exposed ends.

    • +1

I got my sparky to install a 32a industrial socket and a plug+lead on the charger. Not cheap though

    • +1

This would almost certainly be considered a fixture of the house, therefore is part of the house. You'd specifically need to exclude it as part of the sale. It also wouldn't be worth it pay to have to de-fit, as you might as well just buy a new one.

  • +8

I was weighing this up..ended up being an OZB tightass and buying a 15A plug + $220 sparky install. car does 25km an hour charging instead of 50km range an hour.

    Can't justify 1.3k for a charger + installed

    • +5

I'm getting 32A socket installed. Will use umc with custom tail

    • +1

is 25km/hr enough for your use case? What car you have btw, thanks.

      • +5

MG4 51, car was at 22% last night, 8hrs of charging gets it back up to 80% (showing 310km) plenty for 99% out there imo, costs about $2.50 with off peak electricity plan too!

        • +1

cries in unleaded (at least it's not $2 anymore)

        • I have wall charger and it cheaper to charge during the day, not overnight. Might work in your use case.

        • +1

Ahh wondered why the cable was so thick, if it’s rated 15a that makes sense, I might do the same. Still using the granny, never had to drive more than. 300km over consecutive days, so granny has been fine.

          • +3

@UltimateAI: The only drama we've found with granny charging is when you do a one off back to back day or two of long distance….at 10km/hr charge rate its slow to get it back up to full. I still use the gran charger though.

          • @UltimateAI: My granny looks to be 8A only so not just a plug. :(

    • +1

Wouldn't Tesla UMC have been much cheaper and much more flexible than getting a 15A plug put on one of these?

    • +1

Where did you buy the 15A plug?

  • +1

Does it work with single phase power house? Anyone know how fast it charges?

    • -2

      11kw

      • +2

Found it "Note: Gen 3 Wall Connector is compatible with both Single and Three Phase power"

    • +6

7kW with single phase, 22kW with three phase. But your car may only accept 11kW max (Model 3 & Y)

    • 7360kw for single phase

      • +2

        You mean 7360W or 7.36kW

        Single Phase: 230V x 32A = 7360W = 7.36kW, charging for 1 hour tops up 7.36kWh

        3-Phase: 230V x 16A x 3 = 11040W = 11.04kW, charging for 1 hour tops up 11.04kWh

        • +1

          minus losses around 400W

    • Yes, 7kw.

  • +7

where did you bring it from

    • He said if right from the get go: Brought this from Bunnings

Guess he didn't want it delivered.

  • +14

    evchargingaus.com is a SCAM. don't buy from them. https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/ev-charging-austra…

    • +6

Yeah reviews seem very bad. Negging this deal for awareness.

      • This is old mate. Wonder why he's not locked up yet.

    • +3

      evchargingaus.com is a SCAM

evchargingaus.com is just for price match

      • How can you price match when Bunnings is aware of it?

BE WARNED THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM' Placed order in April, and still havent heard anything about delivery. Spoke to a guy at Bunnings about this website and even they said Bunnings know they are scammers.

        • +4

They don't care - I have brought one and they happily price matched.

    • +1

100% a scam website. Take your money and no product. I have filed a police report on them.

      • +14

like how my lancer was $90 a week on petrol, now $4 a week on electricity? one service every 4 years is nice. Handy saving 4-5k a year just on fuel.

        Like that?

          • +9

@Frozensage: We're on ozbargain mate, $5,000 a year savings is nothing to joke about. Cars have one job. Drive…

If i need to get it serviced every 10,000km etc thats probs another $500 a year minimum plus the hassles of taking time off work etc.

Dont worry about that anymore. Can't deny EV's aren't awesome in that instance. super low maintenance.

          • +10

@Frozensage: This is not the forum to be dissing tightasses on

          • @Frozensage: I negged you for spelling like a teenager.

        • +3

I believe it. Lancers are thirsty!

  • +4

Can I use this on a BYD

    • +1

When I researched this a few weeks ago, the answer was yes for BYD. But using all the features on it means installing the Tesla app.

    • +2

In general yes, but the charger can be configured to only work with Tesla, so obviously don't enable that setting when you install it.

  • +1

Consider the Victron EV charger. Cheaper and also integrates better into home automation (via modbus) than Tesla

    • No OCPP support?

      • +2

No OCPP but can integrate well with evcc.io (self hosted charging controller to use excess solar, no subscription needed). Has been working perfectly for over a month now

  • -2

Got the cheapest eBay charger for $300 and it's worked fine for 3 years on my BMW iX3.

    • +4

You can afford BMW but can't afford quality charger

      • -1

There is no difference in quality between these chargers. There is nothing taking place within the wallbox. It all happens in the car. I am an electrical engineer.

        • +3

Electrical and physical termination is only one part of the equation. Handshake is important too, and zappi priced more than double tesla charger couldn’t get it right

          • -1

@jmel: Exactly. Price =/= Efficacy in this instance.

        • +1

Your a shit electrical engineer then. There is a great deal of differences in quality between the different boxes. The biggest to start with is the quality of the lead and plug. Then you have the quality of the circuit and especially the protection systems. Many cheap ones have caused issues and even fired and electrocutions around the world. Lots of good articles, reviews and research out there. The cheap Chinese ones have s horrendous record.

          • +2

@Rally Dave: Calling someone a shit electrical engineer whilst you can't differentiate between your and you're is crazy work. Instant credibility loss.

    • so by your logic, spend $100k to purchase a BMW, then save a massive $500 by purchasing a sketchy charger to power your $100k vehicle?

      • -2

Yes precisely. Because I know how these chargers work. There is no difference between the cheapest one on eBay and a $5000 one.

        • There is no difference from a qualified mechanic and a dealership mechanic, but if I am purchasing a $100k car I like to go to the dealership, so if there are issues with the car there is no fobbing me off blaming cheap chargers or independent mechanics. But you do you.

          • @pwnd: (I didn't read the backstory) dealerships will probably give you the one finger salute anyway :((

          • -3

@pwnd: I am doing me… you are the one that started this dialogue…

          • -1

            @pwnd:

There is no difference from a qualified mechanic and a dealership mechanic

            Not true.

Most regular mechanics will only do general mechanical work and only have the generic set of tools and experience. If you need specialist work, you need a specialist. eg try asking your local mechanic to replace a control unit on a Mercedes transmission. Very few mechanics can do it because it's all custom fasteners needing specific Mercedes tools and require a Mercedes computer to reset the programming.

Having said that, there are alternatives to dealers for specialist work, but there aren't many. Certainly not 'any qualified mechanic'

but if I am purchasing a $100k car I like to go to the dealership

The dealership is mostly a rort. Find yourself a quality mechanic that specialises in your marque with a good reputation.

  • I opted to get Zj Beny EV charger with a solar dlb box. Now I use excess solar to charge the car. It was $1.5k installed

  • +4

Thanks OP, bought one. Now I need to buy EV

  • Been happily type 1 trickle-charging my EV since I got it 8 weeks ago. Haven't paid a cent charging during the day with the solar. Done over 2,000km already, has only dropped below 50% once or twice.

Doesn't it cost a bit to charge your vehicle at 7-11kW?

    • +1

Depends - Summers, I agree the plug in charger would be good enough, but for winters, solar would hardly generate anything - so you end you getting power from grid. The 11 kW is good to charge overnight (EV plan) and does 10-100% in about 6 hours (depending on EV)

      • +2

Yeah I understand for people who have their EV out during the day, we are lucky in that regard. If I can keep it charged by only charging at 1.5kW then I will continue to do so. I also swapped to Momentum for the $100 Evie card so I can top up there if needed.

    • Doesn't it cost a bit to charge your vehicle at 7-11kW?

How long is a piece of string?

There is a public charger up the road from me that charges 35c/kWh so it costs me about $17-$18 to go from 20% to 80%.

  • +3

Be very cautious, a friend ordered took ages to get her money back after they failed to ship her order.

  • +1

Happy with the price error Ocular EV chargers from Bunnings, but that 'deal' will likely not repeat.

  • Do you have to price match in store?

    • Online or in store

  • +2

Supposed advantage of a wall charger is more stable charging speed or current.

I have single phase 32a 5 pin socket with umc which does 7kw/hr charging which is same as wallbox ahd completely stable

$1,000 sparky cost and flexibility of umc instead of a wall box.

    • I have the same setup. The installation cost is the same as the fixed charger but the portable charger is cheaper and it can also be used when camping etc.

    • Username checks out. The advantage of a wall charging station over portable would be a tidier set up, i.e. no box laying around.
Where do you get this "more stable" from?

Wall charging stations "in general" will support higher power charging, e.g. 11 kW or more, providing the vehicle onboard charger supports it and you have 3 phase power.
I too also recommend installing a 32 A 5 pin socket outlet, for the reason you mention and also allows a future change of charging station.
You can still use a wall charging station, fit a plug and hang it on the wall and get similar benefits.

$1000 install does not mean much without details of the work done, sounds expensive for a simple install but could be reasonable for a complicated install.

No such thing as "7kw/hr", you mean 7 kW. Another minor point, the charger is in the car, the external equipment is an EVSE, charging station is also acceptable.

  • Aww, was posted here hours prior since it listed 9 available only, but looks like they opened it up to backorders..

  • +5

see previous OzBargain post. consistent horror stories where orders were not delivered and refunds not given.

pls pay attention to OP's note that this is only for price matching at Bunnings and not for you to actually buy from this seller.

  • I'm shocked bunnings didn't put a sticker on it and call it a different SKU.
