  • worth buying for the missus?
she has an S5 currently and wants a better camera
    cheers

    • +2

Well it will be a massive step up. Pixel is always known for the best camera.

S8 would be the other option, not as good camera, not as good software but a nicer more modern look and feel IMO.

      • -2

Software is a moot point on Android, you can boot whatever you'd like.

        • +1

          I'd imagine the missus doesn't wanna modify a phone…. esp when she's using an S5 now….

The Pixel would be the best Android regardless outta the box software wise for the simple fact it's not loaded with clutter.

      • +2

In this case for the price, the Pixel 2 wins. Just need to be prepared with a spare phone incase any of many issues arise and you need to send it back to Hong Kong for repairs.

    • +1

Definitely. She will be able to use the phone smooth for at least 2 more years and get pretty much all the upcoming Android updates released by Google since the software is pure and raw.

Don't forget, no 3.5mm headphone jack without an adaptor and also no expandable storage. Unfortunate deal breakers for many

      • no 3.5mm headphone jack without an adaptor

I don't get why this is such an issue lol. You are putting an extra few cm of wire on your wired earphones/headphones..

As for no expandable storage - 64GB is enough for me considering you get free unlimited photos + videos storage.

    • After all those recommendations, you should go for it mate!

    • If you're somewhat technical or can easily follow steps why don't you upgrade the S5 to Lineage OS 16 (Android Pie) and you can always use a different camera app, like Footej or Camera FV-5, both great camera apps. There are plenty of guides around, here is the one provided by the guys over at LineageOS.

Look into it, you might be able to get some use of it yet.

  • Is it legal to only offer a 6 month warranty?

    • +3

These are refurb so don't think same warranty period would apply if buying new.

    • for second hand items, yes.

    • +1

You can give an express warranty of 5 seconds.
It doesn't change your statutory warranty.

  • +2

Have these been repaired with inferior after-market displays?

    • +2

      "repaired"
Yeah, I have experienced a couple phones with the screen and battery switched out. Its a pretty common scam.
No idea about these guys 'though.

Guys and girls, pls refer to to their previous post before buying refurb products from them - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/438636?page=1#comment.

I am currently waiting on my Sony phone which has been sent for repair.

    • Wow..seems like lot of pain for saving some money..

    • that's the risk you take. depending on your luck, if you pay half price for a phone with lesser warranty, you're better off if you get 2 out of 3 working fine or not breaking even for 1 out of 2, or worse.

    • You're comparing Sony with Google.
I bought a refurbished pixel 1 off FB market. Turned out I couldn't make/receive phone calls.
Called Google without even having a tax invoice and they organised a replacement. Took a week from pick up to receiving the new phone. Brilliant.

Any deals on the S9 or S9+?

    • +1

      x2 please :)

    • Can't promise anything at this point, but would be posting another deal this week. Keep following!

      • +2

I wont be buying from you after reading this
It's not OK to ignore customer emails and sell phones cobbled together from other phones and tell people they are under warranty.
Take responsibility for what you are selling, which is beginning to look like returned lemons and dodgy repair jobs.

Yeah I got a refurb S7 from these guys, and it had issues with the 4g reception that weren't immediately obvious. I was getting a new S8 on my contract in a few months anyway so never bothered about returning it as I needed a phone to tide me over. I was planning to keep the S7 a s a spare. But now that it is out of "warranty" the screen has totally died. I won't be buying another refurb, not from here.

Lucky I didn't pull a trigger on one last time, always thought it was weird when it was advertised as being change of mind returns, yet only had 6 months warranty left. Seller probably knows manufacturer won't touch the damn thing to begin with.
