    not drinking is cheaper

      Prevention vs Cure

      • +3

Prevention is better than cure :)

    • +2

crazy to me how normalised drinking alcohol is.

  • +58

Drinking as much tap water as possible before going to bed.

    • +6

That could be dangerous for the individual and bedding involved.

    • This + some food before bed and get some decent sleep.

Oh and a cold shower in the morning

      Always works for me.

    • I found that worked best for me too.

    • -1

OP asked for cure on a budget…

    • -7

      Is this even real.

Like boooo hooo are you suffering from a hangover so bad that a glass of water would have fixed it?

      • +3

I thought dehydration was the main cause of a hangover. No?

        • -2

That and poorly produced alcohol. Most alcohol both just fermented and distilled has a small percentage of methanol. The liver processes methanol after ethanol and gives you a hangover. This is why a 'hair of the dog' can work as it supplies more ethanol for the liver to work on but it just delays the hangover. My son in law distills his own spirit and it is very 'clean' and I've never had a hangover from it.
B******** rum is notorious for sending some people very violent and I put this down to impurities.

          • +10

@Solarlux: Interesting about ethanol and methanol. The Bundy thing could also be the typical drinker of it, and how much they choose to indulge in…

          • +2

@Solarlux: Isn't methanol poisonous? Even a small amount can make you go blind. When liquor is made they remove the methanol from the ethanol.

E.g Methlyated spirits is mostly ethanol with a bit of methanol so people don't drink it.

          • @Solarlux: Bum rum is a culprit I suspect.

        • Same here, I very rarely drink but when I do I come home and basically force feed myself as much water is I can fit in my stomach as a precautionary measure.

          Minimal - no hangover.

      • Try it… you're welcome.

Issue is.. you always forget to do it when you're majorly hammered.

      • +3

it actually works really well. get smashed and then drink like 5 cups of water or as much as you can before bed. youll (hopefully) wake up to piss during the night but the next day is never as severe

hangovers are caused by dehydration so you just hydrate and things are good

        • This. Plus in my experience having an additional glass of water everytime you do wake up in the night to piss eliminates the remaining 50% of the hangover. For me this makes the difference between still feeling a bit hung over and feeling totally fine.

      • Lmao what a hilarious comment. Water is the ONLY thing that cures a hangover, the only other possible thing that would help is anti-nausea medication.

    • Chicken Stock, 1/2 - 1 litre.
Prepare it before you leave the house, put it next to the bedside table ( Together with the pan ), preferably in a thermos to keep it warm
When you get home, and don't forget, throw up, when done, drink water and throw up again.
Now drink the ( preferably warm ) chicken stock. It should rehydrate and give you a nice warm stomach.
Eventually next day, if still not well, take a Alca-Zelzer ( if you can keep stuff down ).
When feeling better drink Coke ( with sugar ). The caffeine wakes you up and the sugar gives you strength.

    • My wife introduced this to me when we were younger and I swear by it now - take 2 paracetamols BEFORE going to bed along with as much tap water as you can. No headache when you wake up and takes the edge off in the morning for sure. My standard go to solution if I know I need to be up relatively fresh after a few drinks.

Of course be careful about mixing medication with alcohol blah blah understand your limits and risks etc

If you've finished a bottle of tequila on your own I probably wouldn't do this and I doubt anything in the world will help you.

  • +11

    Coke.

    (Technically correct answer).

    • +2

      beat me! haha

      • +2

I'm all about speed (not the drug).

    • +1

Is … that affordable on a budget?

      • Budget of a drug lord. Sure

    • I was told it also works a treat for an upset stomach.

    • Too racist.

  • +7

What's the best hangover cure on a budget?

The cheapest cure is drinking lots of water and resting.

There is a slightly more expensive cure that involves a few lines… haha

  • +3

Couple of panadol, big drink of water and a swim in the ocean.

    • +8

Don't take panadol. Your liver doesn't like it

      • +28

Pretty sure your liver is already not liking the fact you poisoned it with alcohol.

        • +6

Probably why it's a bad idea to then take Panadol!

          • +2

@callum9999: My hangover cure is a bottle of water and exercise. Followed by 8 panadol.

      • -1

Panadol when you're hungover is a bad idea. Ibuprofen is the better choice.

        • +6

Alcohol is actually theoretically protective for the liver as you deplete the cytochrome that converts paracetamol into its active metabolite. (There's more to it than this see https://www.nps.org.au/australian-prescriber/articles/alcoho…)

Ibuprofen is probably not a great / worse idea with alcohol as one irritates the lining of the stomach (and can cause atrophic gastritis) and the other weakens gastric mucosa.

          • @Dsquall: Yes, alcoholics have long believed they could pickle their liver for better health.

            I would challenge this thesis.

          • @Dsquall: Getting some food in before ibuprofen would be a big help, though.

  • +24

1.25ltr of coke, greasy food & grog bog

  • +4

water, gatorade, sleep. Your hangover is mainly due to dehydration secondary to fluid loss whilst drinking.

    • +1

Don't forget respiratory depression and hypo-oxygenated state.

Fluid replacement + bariatric chamber/oxygen tank actually works a treat.

      • +5

Jesus - what do you have at your place Walter White?

        • +4

You'd need a warrant to know.

      • As a past scuba diver, I concur.

        • +7

As a past scuba diver, I concur.

          Saddest words, my friend.

  • +20

Party with a med student, and they'll hook you up to a saline drip. Bye bye hangover

    • +4

      Sounds like a cool party

    • There's nothing normal about normal saline

  • +1

All the methods I have needed to happen before your "friend's" drinking session. Eating a full meal, don't mix the types of drinks(eg. beer and wine, or beer and spirits, etc.), drinking lots of water between drinks and finally pace yourself.

    • +9

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I learnt from somewhere that the thing about mixing drinks is a total myth. Alcohol is alcohol.

      • I don't know about the biology side of things. But from my experience in my younger days, it works. Mix wine with beer, hangover next day. Drink only wine or only beer, no hangover.

      • +1

Don't get a hangover on Wine. Hangover on Beer is hard, as you need to drink a lot ( unless you drink crappy beer like VB )
As for Spirits, only drink Vodka. Vodka + Red Bull = Ideal Party mix.
If you want to get drunk in style, have French Champagne. Best Hangover ever: Mostly because you had a great night and probably because you won't wake up all alone.

  • +12

    Dirty kebab.

  • 2 ibuprofen pills works for me. No hangover for a few years now.

  • -3

    Realising your getting married

    • +7

      That certainly is sobering..

  • lots of water before bed. crack a fair bit of pink salt in one glass of water and down that before bed. also 2x B complex vitamins before bed. and when u wake up another one or 2 b complex.

done this at least 20 times and no hangover at all/very very minimal hangover.

i read an atricle ways back saying alcohol dehydrates u so pink salt and water is good and alcohol makes u drain out b vitamin like crazy.
so it said do that. it works.

    • Salt dehydrates though

      • +5

Salt by itself can be dehydrating but when you are consuming large amounts of water you will need electrolytes (i.e. salt - Na+ Cl -) to help transport the water into your cells and minimise water loss through urination.

  • +12

Sitting on the floor of the shower is about the only thing that makes me feel better with a serious hangover. That and making myself spew just for the 10 minutes of freedom from the nausea.

    • +3

      Cost effective!

    • +11

Coming to the realisation that you won't start feeling better under you have a tactical chunder is the turning point of every one of my hangovers.

      • +5

        The old tackyak

    • Exactly mine.

  • cold shower

  • Sleep

  • -8

Panadol forte on a empty stomach x 3, works wonders hahaha. That's if you can get a script. But if you can't, Big bottle of power-aide, couple of nurofen, and sleep!

    • +1

Bit of oxy works like a charm 🔔😎

      • +1

AHHAHA yes, but its a lot easier to get a script of Forte :P

  • Drop a vitamin B tablet before a night out, then drink plenty of water.

  • Sleep and water. Three ibuprofens and three paracetamols if you want to push the boat out.

    • +3

Best deal for Ibuprofen and Paracetamols please. Tony Abott said that he would stop the boats.

      • Get generics at Chemist Warehouse. Can't remember prices, but should be able get a packet of each for under $10. Supply should see you through several doses and hangovers.

        • +2

Under $10?!! Do you buy yours at the supermarket/newsagency/petrol station?
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/307140
$0.69 for 100. Even at full price it's not $10…

          • +2

@lainey13: That's on the paracetamol. How much do you pay for the ibuprofen as well (same 100 pack)?

            • @Seraphin7: Just bought 50 ibu for $3.49

              • @lainey13: That's a good price.

100 para + 100 ibu for $7.67. Should see you through a good number of hangovers for well under the $10 budget!

    • -1

Only if you're looking for permanent kidney damage. Taking higher than recommended OTC pain killers is more dangerous than you'd think.

      • -2

Yes and no. The kids versions of these specify amounts based on weight. You then suddenly become an adult and everyone's on two tablets? Big difference between someone at 50-odd kgs and another at 100-odd kgs.

        • You reckon your kidneys keep growing if you become an adult and gain weight?

          • -1

@pos: I'm saying to have the effect.

I would assume that an overall larger person (190-odd cm weighing the better part of 100kgs) would have larger kidneys than a smaller person (160-odd cm weighing 50-odd kgs). Or does everyone get the same sized kidneys?

            • -1

@Seraphin7: Well your 160cm 100kg mate will almost certainly be in a bit of trouble based on your advice. I definitely wouldn't go on a forum claiming it as a good idea.
For all we know, the size of you or your kidneys isn't even related to the damage caused. You'd need to speak to a specialist to really know. But we're not specialists. They are dangerous. Stick to the packet dosage.
As you advised - ibuprofen and paracetamol will do a lot; no need to take 3.

              • -1

                @pos: I'm confused.

I thought your original point was that the impact of dosage was a function of the size of your kidneys?

Now you appear to be saying that the relevance of kidney size to this whole discussion is not known?

                • -1

@Seraphin7: My original post is talking about risk of permanent kidney damage by taking more than the packet recommendation. You asserted some theory where your weight (and possibly height) is somehow relevant. I assumed (possibly incorrectly) that you think larger people have bigger kidneys that could possibly handle larger doses. I pointed out that weight may not be relevant and that even if it was, it still may not apply to some people, and then they will get permanent kidney damage.
The only way to know is to speak to a specialist who would almost certainly say to take, at most, the packet dose, only as needed.
I've heard of people abusing ibuprofen and have severe kidney damage in their early 30s (usually to self-manage chronic back pain) - and are looking at dialysis and hoping for a kidney transplant. To look at that kind of risk to manage a hangover is beyond stupid.

  • I knew a Dr who said a saline drip was awesome, very budget friendly. But you gotta know how to do the IV line.

    • +1

      Enema?

      • No IV (intra veneous, into your veins)

    • +2

Had to go once to the Emergency because of a Hang over. Mostly caused because we mixed Instant coffee and vodka. Too much of both.
While getting the IV I was already feeling better, and found myself thinking of having a beer later on.

      • +1 for effort!

  • water

  • +4

    Keep drinking the next morning.

  • Normally I'd take a bottle of cold light lager, like Miller. Or a bowl of Borsch (tomato soup).
Don't forget to dump shit, as you will release yourself from that stuff from last night sitting in a guts.

    • Btw Borsch is beetroot soup.
But any soup will do with hangover, thats the easiest to ingest and digest

  • Hair of the dog and electrolytes + coconut water.

The notion is if a hangover is methanol toxicity, you’re going to have another drink and the ethanol displaces the methanol off the enzyme and you will feel better.
    Explained here

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtGrtR5Gq68

    • Whilst true, it is not a cure. It's a very effective delay.

Just loading up on the precursor to methanol which happens to have a higher affinity.
