If anyone is curious, I've completed this course with Ace about 12 months ago and can highly recommend it; thorough, focused and practical.

  • what sort of jobs can you get after this course, besides of-course the usual drone operator?

    • +4

      Drone salesman

    • It's illegal to fly a drone over 100g in almost all of the Sydney metro area for example.
(even if it's just for fun)
These courses would allow you to do so.

      • then it's a pretty expensive hobby.

It is, and with so much more restriction now a day unfortunately.

I still have a DJI Phantom 3 Advanced from over 2 years ago. Did quite a number of flights in Sydney and also once at Great Ocean Road and 12 Apostles. Now many places have banned drone flying, I am running out of idea where I am going to fly next, so haven't flown mine for over 6 months.

I suggest people thinking of buying a drone should do lots of research. Find out where about you are allowed to fly and whether you are prepare to travel to those places, before you spend the money.

          • @edfoo: This is a good comment. I purchased a spark and whilst I love it, I am at times struggling to find places to fly. Happy I only forked out for it as I’d be spewing if I spent $3K for a Mavic Pro 2 and was in the same boat just trying to find small pieces of land to fly. So much fun though! Shame a few people have ruined it for many.

      • 100g?

        What is the g?

        • +1

100 grams maximum drone weight before you need a license or are limited where you can fly it.

        • Gram in weight.

          • @edfoo: That is a pretty small drone, so all the big name ones are illegal?

            • @Grok: They're not illegal, you just can't fly them near airports and helipads, which means almost all of each capital city.

Most places around the inner west appear to be ok so long as there's no manned aircraft in operation to and from the aerodrome/helipads within 5.5km of you?

        • All of the inner west is within 5.5km of Sydney Airport, which will be in operation during during the day, and you can't fly at night.
          also,
"You must not fly over or above people. This could include festivals, sporting ovals, populated beaches, parks, busy roads and footpaths."
"You must not fly your drone within 30 metres of people, unless the other person is part of controlling or navigating the drone."

          • @bondiben: Isn't somewhere like here ok so long as you're not aware of any flights in operation near by in YCCD Concord? It's not in the red zone and it's deserted on Sundays…

            • @lolcoaster: Seems to be ok.
I'm no expert - just going by the links I've posted and the app.
Note there are two other helipads covering that zone as well as YCCD, and the harbour is a no fly zone too.

Inner west Sydney, from fringe of CBD to Ashfield and Dulwich Hill, forget about flying your drone at all.

You can download the free app "Can I Fly There?", you will see Sydney Metropolitan region is full of no-fly zones and restricted altitude zones for drones.

    • People who want to advance their skills?

      • You legally wouldnt be able to fly at a wedding as cant fly near crowds

  • So where exactly can one fly a drone if you live in Sydney or Melbourne?

    Any suggestions

  • ABC reports that soon everyone in australia flying drones will need a license/rego - however it sounds like it will only cost $20-$160
