Kobo Clara HD eReader $138 + Delivery @ Harvey Norman (Online Only)

190

I have been looking for an eReader I could use for borrowing Overdrive ebooks from my library. This is the cheapest price I have seen for the Kobo Clara HD and a lot of reviews seem to rate it just as highly as Kindle's Paperwhite. Usually $179, currently on sale at JB Hi-Fi for $159.

Key features
• E-Ink touchscreen, 300 ppi, print quality
• ComfortLight PRO automatically changes colour temperature to help reduce blue-light exposure
• 8GB of on-board memory, store up to 6,000 eBooks
• 512 MB RAM for the most demanding content
• Compatible with EPUB, EPUB3 PDF & MOBI files.

  • Love My kobo Clara

  • Delivery $7 for Melbourne metro.
Very tempting. Torn between waiting for the new kindle on the 12th April ($130) or going for this. This has better blue screen dimming by the sounds of it but other than that its hard to know…
    Anyone have one?

    • I have found no way to send books to my Kobo over wifi. With Kindle I can just simply send the books via email to [email protected]

Just use calibre to get books on the kobo over wifi.

Calibre can email books as above so you don't have to keep plugging in. Especially if you hosting Central calibre on a server with easy way to plug usb

          • @asa79: Yes, I tried Calibre, but it is only a little bit better than USB cable. It still communicate using my wifi network which means the devices need to be close together. And Calibre needs to be installed on my laptop.
I wonder why they don't have email option? Ebook can be sent from virtually anywhere.

@Averell: Sorry I only have set up for kindle and Sony ereader not sure about kobo

      • Have looked at a few videos of the more advanced Paperwhite ($180 bracket) and the Kobo, yeah the Kobo has better lighting options, looks better with a smaller bezel and similar screen and is lighter…but the kindle has the entire kindle ecosystem, it has less of the extra features but seems to be a better option overall if you just want it to work.
        I think I'll wait.

  • It looks like a kindle with the kobo written on it

That's a great price. I got one for my daughter 6 months ago and it's been great. We've never owned a kindle so can't really compare but basically if you want to borrow ebooks from Australian libraries then forget about kindle.

We are using overdrive with Brisbane city council library and it just works so seemlessly. You only have to put in your library card number once when you set up overdrive.

The only thing to consider is if you need it to be water proof or prefer a bigger screen then go for the aura h20 fur the extra dollars.

    • Yeah…it’s the biggest disappointment I have with the Kindle…can’t use it with the local library because of the ‘locked down’ ecosystem.

Otherwise, I like it, and of course if you like to buy eBooks, then Amazon offers a pretty big range (and you get the 1,000 rotating titles with Prime too).

Don’t like the backlight ‘temp’ on the Kindle Paperwhite though.

      Really, just need both. ;-)

  • I am interested in this for reading pdf textbooks but I think a 6 inch screen might be too small. Any recommendations?

It's back up to 179 now unless I'm missing something here

    • Hopefully drops back down again soon!
Looks like it's just Myer, HN online and JB that stock them
