I can get whole eye fillet $25/kg at Aldi. Why should I buy yours?

      Why should I buy yours?

To pay off their holiday house at Portsea.

They will claim its super fancy meat, but its not.

      They advertise regularly on here.

        its super fancy meat,

        So is this…

      • +4

Have you bought some? The comments I see from people who have are almost always glowing.

          Cognitive bias.
For something so expensive but subjective, reviews are worthless, and only double-blind tests count.

@bargaino: Thanks for the psych lesson but not sure it's entirely relevant. If there's anywhere that people are going to complain about not getting their money's worth it's here. I've not bought anything from this store before but look at the threads every time they're posted and the return buyers are usually happy.

This specific deal probably isn't the best example as there have been cheaper ones in the past, but as someone who loves a top notch steak this price isn't anything crazy.

            • @Hinee: +1 i regularly by from Sutton and their meat is top notch. Comparing it to the local coles or aldi is really showing how stupid some people are. Even comparing it to a butcher. Just because someone owns a Butchers shop it is assumed their meat is good. There are various ways they can get their meat to save a buck to you know. I can tell you my local butcher is definitely nothing to rave about for the price and is actually more expensive then Suttons.

I get better value packs and better meat from Sutton. And if you see how the meat is packed and delivered to you then you will know why it is slightly more expensive. I'm happy to pay to get it shipped to me properly.

Sutton can post and can get good votes and comments. Just depends which winners take notice of the comments and have nothing better to do but complain about the price of something they know nothing about. Even neg because the deal doesnt suit them. Good ol Ozbargain aye.

$40/kg is fine. But can't you get similar from a local butcher? If not then try them.

I just question the value of reviews for something like this.

    • To clarify rep I'm not trying to be a prick. Sell me on it! I'm sure probably heaps better.

3kg for The Price of 2kg Eye Fillet Steaks $119

$40/kg for raw steak is not a bargain…

  • I absolutey loved the rib fillets from these boys a few weeks ago. Restaurant grade steaks at home. My father in law is still talking about it back home in Maryborough. Haha

  • OP can you please post a photo of the cryovac beef eye fillet?

This will show us what brand/station this has come from.

If its economy though it's usually around $18 a kg..

It would want to be Wagyu 9+ at that price point.

    • +3

Be a bit realistic.. you won't even find a 9+ Wagyu eye fillet in Australia. All that gets exported.

Anything Wagyu would also be around 3kg for an eye fillet as the cows are around 600kg - 750kg.

A 1kg eye fillet would be a yearling. Doubt it's even Angus.

At this price point we couldn't even hope for Rangers Valley or anything cheap but premium. My guess is it's just yearling.

    • +2

Where can I get grade 9+ Wagyu at $40/kg?

      • True, I was referring to pre-discount price. Have seen 5+ around the $40/kg mark a few times though.

        • +2

Nice, I'm a tightarse so never tried wagyu, but even grade 5 would be tempting for $40/kg.

In my area coles basic eye fillet is $43/kg, grass fed is over $50/kg and most of the butchers are dearer.

For the time being I settle for clearance meats close to the best before from coles or woolworths. Just had a clearance t-bone for lunch today, it was $8.80/kg.

        • Difference between 5 and 9 is astronomical.

  • +2

The usual price for top quality eye fillet at most butchers is around $40.

  • Quality GRASS fed (not grain finished) beef is always more expensive than grain finished beef. These are on par with Cape Grim at $60/kg at our local specialist butcher.

Completely different flavour and texture alltogether.

I always thought these kinds of meats were pretentious - but once you actually try them you understand the reason behind the premium price.

    • I always thought these kinds of meats were pretentious - but once you actually try them

Given that most beef in Australia is grass fed, and only 1/3 grain-finished according to what I read, i find this statement surprising.

Is it really common in Australia to have only eaten grain-finished steak?
Or are you basing your comment on reading American literature?

  • Price corresponds to the quality. I was pretty happy with my meat when it got delivered.
