  • What the hell is Powershop?

It’s a really neat energy provider with the best customer service. It’s also dubbed one of the greenest (if not the greenest) in Oz.

      • +2

Strange name for an energy company.

        • Yep saw the deal tagged as home and garden and figured cheap tools… Was disappointed.

      • +2

Yet they are one of the most expensive power companies when it comes to purchasing green power

        • Isn't it like their energy is, by default, greener? Then you purchase even more greener.

          • +1

@pizzaguy: Yes this is true, they carbon offset all their energy however every company offers the additional purchase of 'Green Power', this ensures that all power is purchased from renewable energy sources (note not supplied as that's not possible on a grid with differing energy mix).

  • By using referral links, both sides get $75. Correct me if I'm wrong, it's instant - not in 4 installments like in this deal.

    • +2

      In three $25 installments.

  • Just be aware that they do credit checks.

    • Don't all electricity companies do?

After all, it's a postpaid account. You use the electricity first and then pay for it.

Every electricity company I signed up with in the last 3 years or so pinged my credit file.

I'm not overly concerned about that as it's not a finance company/ credit card/ bank so future lenders will not be fussed about that I presume.

      • Origin and AGL don't as far as I know. Most do, though.
Also there's not a lot of transparency when it comes to how banks view credit files so probably still better to keep it as minimal as possible, but who knows…

      • How do you tell if somebody "pinged your credit file"?

        • +2

You can monitor your credit report for free using dedicated services.

You will likely have three different credit reports and credit scores. Four if you ever lived in Tassie.

Here's a guide I wrote that may be helpful.

I started using powershop a month ago after my co-worker recommended it to me.
You can pre-pay your electricity by buying power packs and the rates works out to be cheaper than AGL (I used to be with them).

    • you should look at Pacific Hydro/Tango, no discounts gimmics, just cheaper rates & connecting chargers.

Powershop used to be a bit of a darling here & on WHirlpool. they quite cheap and power packs all bought at Xc/kwh for Ykwh. then they suddenly changed to some weird system designed to confuse, So everyone bailed.

I just had a quick look, they're still 5c/kwh more expensive for me. without having any powerpack gimmicks.
