ZHIYUN-TECH SMOOTH 4 SMARTPHONE GIMBAL – BLACK
(SMART PHONE NOT INCLUDED – FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY)
The black Smooth-4 Smartphone Stabilizer from Zhiyun-Tech has been designed to provide cine-style functions to content creators using their mobile phones for video capture. When used with the free, downloadable ZY Play app, the control panel enables Android and iOS users to control both gimbal and smartphone camera functions such as focus, zoom, time-lapse, and still photo settings. The Smooth-4's controls reduce the need to touch your phone's screen, thereby minimizing unintended jostling while recording. A dedicated "Vertigo" function emulates the perspective-shifting, dolly/zoom effect dear to many filmmakers. Compared to the ZT Smooth-3, the Smooth-4's controls are more ergonomically laid out and better labeled with icons. The Smooth-4 also has a significantly larger focus/zoom wheel, a PhoneGo mode for quickly grabbing the action, multiple time-lapse functions, and object tracking. With the ability to support smartphones weighing up to 7.4 oz and measuring up to 3.35" high, the Smooth-4 is compatible with almost any mobile phone.
In a nod to its filmmaker-centric design, the Smooth-4's large focus wheel even has a witness mark that can be lined up to focus marks you place on its textured band. The wheel is located on the left side of the handgrip, with a button placed to its lower right that lets you toggle between focus and zoom functions, with a button light indicating zoom mode. Scroll and press to select settings with the central Menu/Return button, or choose the Parameter Display button to switch between close shooting, still photo, and full-auto modes. The Smooth-4 offers 300° of pan and 240° of tilt and roll for nimbly capturing your action shots, or for smoothly gliding along more tranquil scenes. Choose between Pan-Following, Locking, Full-Follow, or the full-speed PhoneGo mode to adjust your level of axis control while shooting.

Powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, the Smooth-4 features a maximum runtime of up to 12 hours. A USB Type-C port on the handgrip enables you to add a separately available power pack to extend your shooting time even further. An LED display indicates your remaining power, and an output port enables you to charge your phone while shooting with the stabilizer. The Zhiyun-Tech Smooth-4 Smartphone Stabilizer includes a mini tripod, carrying case, and a USB cable. A single 1/4"-20 female thread on the handgrip bottom can be used to mount the stabilizer onto the included tripod or other support, or to attach a compatible accessory.

  • This is a bit off topic, but what would be a good gimbal for a compact camera like g7x?

    • +1

You will need the next size up (e.g. Crane M) if you want something out of the box. The phone gimbals generally aren't strong enough for a 300g camera unless you find/make some counterweight mounts - for example I use a Zhiyun smooth q (now discontinued) with an RX100 III because someone was selling a modified counterweight mount. There are a few youtube videos showing the smooth q with an augmented mount working with the G7x

      • Thanks for the advice, Too bad the Crane M is way out of my budget and not included in this sale anyway.

        • I have a RX100 (3 grams lighter than the G7X) and have just bought the Feiyu G6 Plus with this promo for $279 to replace my Crane M which it's USB port just broke.

The Crane M was great though, but it's been discontinued with no apparent successor so I had to look elsewhere for a replacement.

          • +1

@vu: Yep, G6 plus as far as I can tell is the cheapest option new right now in the 300-800 grams range. It also works with smaller DSLRs with a prime lens and mirrorless.

          • @vu: Hi, how is your experience with the G6 Plus? Do you recommend it?

  • Zhiyun Smooth 4 or DJI Osmo Mobile 2, which one to choose? If not considering cost differences, which one has better features and easier to use?

    • +1

      Zhiyun > DJI

Has a greater range of motion
      More stable
      Cheaper
      Has a detachable base
Micro USB port to charge your phone
      USB Type C charging port

Zhiyun's app is unpolished and drains a lot of battery whereas DJI's app is far superior with better object tracking

      • Watching comparison videos makes the Zhiyun look very sub par compared to the Osmo in practice.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzN35SBbwpU

I suggest people have a look at the results rather than the specs, as it doesn't matter if a function is included if the execution is so poor.

    • +1

From the reviews which I watched, the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 seemed to be smoother and more stable. It's also much more compact.

    • +1

The DJI has a far superior app if that matters (i.e. the tracking actually works, but it is kinda gimmicky) - however you might not want to shoot with the DJI app anyway.

In terms of stabalisation they are much the same.

Anybody using this please share your experience of this gimbal use with bigger phones like note 9 or iPhone 8 plus

    • +1

I ordered mine from Last deal Received mine using on iPhone 8 Plus. So far really happy n still learning

    • I am using this on an S10+ and it works fine. Even with a case on. Working good for me, but definitely still learning all the features.

    • Yep no good with Note 9 with very thin TPU case - works okay without the case though.
As someone else mentioned, counterweights can be used

    • Worked great with my 8 Plus and works perfectly with my XS Max.

      • With case?

        • I took the case off, the 8 Plus and the XS Max are the largest phones it could take, so I removed the case.

    • +1

There is an adjustment for the centre of gravity. You need to set this based on the phone (size/weight). It will then balance accordingly.

I put my iPhone X in and it pretty much worked out of the box. When I put in an old IPhone 6S Plus, the phone swung down and based on the instructions, you should use the gimbal adjustment part to ensure proper balance before turning it on.

  • +1

Needed counterweights for note9 in a case..

    • Do they come with them?

  • "This code can't be applied to your order."

    Do I need ebayplus? :(

  • if anybody interested, there's an adapter for Sony rx100 to fit on this. 3d printered one selling on eBay.

    • How much is it?

      An iphone is 200G
      RX100 is around 300G..
      7.4oz is 210G :|

Zhiyun apparently can't go over 210G

      • The counterweights will allow it to work.

        • Awesome. Will have to test this out!

It's been already quite popular thing in Korea.

He also made mount for LX10. Check price on eBay.

Is this good with the new Huawei P30?

  • +5

Over the years, of all things I have bought via Ozbargains, this (earlier model) is the most underused item of all. In over a year, I've played around with it for about half an hour and I think it's sitting on a shelf, in a cupboard somewhere in the house.

Don't buy unless you have a genuine need for it.

    • +4

:( ok thank you. saved me a purchase

    • +1

May be dumb but genuine question - why do i need to buy it over just a selfie stick for mobile phone ???

      • +1

Research what a gimbal is, in short if you want to capture stable video footage that eliminates/reduces jitter then you will need a gimbal.

      • +3

        It's not a selfie stick.
        It's a 3-axis stabilizer for smooth video.

        • +2

Looks, it's a nice piece of kit that gives smooth video when using small cameras/phones but I have a Note 9 and the gimbal struggle to cope with the size of it.

Most importantly though, 95% of us don't need this sort of smoothness and if we do, it's probably for 0.01% of the time. That's more of my point…..don't buy it unless you really, really need this function. I certainly don't.

          • +1

@gasman70: You can buy counterweights for a couple of bucks on eBay or there are youtube videos on how to DIY but yes unless you are a mobile filmmaker or want to do like Instagram videos you probably don't need it.

  • +3

It’s really big gimbal and no 360 degree , also not user friendly enough for forward filming with GoPro

    • +1

Yea came back into stock was tempted but its just soo big. I can tell I will regret taking this with me on holidays
Will wait for the dji osmo 2 to come back on sale

      • +1

Or , you could get the newly updated moza mini S coming up next week, lot smaller , foldable and extendable for selfie :
        https://www.amazon.com.au/Extendable-Smartphone-One-Button-H…

        • +1

          ooh affordable

      • I can tell I will regret taking this with me on holidays

Until you get some sweet sweet gimbal shots.. then you will think, it was almost… Almost worth lugging this thing around.

      • +1

Osmo isn't that much shorter the smooth 4 also comes with a tripod & the USB port on the OSMO is in an odd odd spot to use while in use.
If it was me I would try to find the Freevision Vilta M on special.

        • I did a lot research on these and I too liked the Vilta over the other 2. However I ended up going a different way and got an insta360 one x. I love it!

          • @ShipShapeRC: Oh nice! Yeah been looking at that but expensive atm!

  • +1

I bought this gimbal from the same seller when I posted a deal last time it was on sale.
I used it for couple of days and my experience with it isn't too bad. But obviously there are improvements to be made.
First is the app on Android as a lot of users have mentioned.
Second, it will take a while to learn how to control it. As a user moving to Smooth Q from Smooth 4, it doesn't have the joystick to reposition the frame, so it will have to be done by the full follow button or by pulling the phone.
To me, it isn't that much bigger or heavier than the Osmo Mobile 2.
So I think to those who can't decide, what you should consider is that are you going to use the gimbal with iPhones or Android phones? If iPhone then the Smooth 4 is great IMO. Also, the Osmo Mobile is great for someone who just want a basic, simple gimbal to use, while the Smooth 4 is capable of doing a lot more, with the features that it comes with. But again, would be better when paired with an iPhone than an Android phone.

    • All the gimbal apps seem to work better with apple. There are limitations built into android - such as stepped zoom on android, smooth zoom on apple.

      • +1

Agree. But I think the osmo app is still better on Android. Just want to point out, coz not alot of people gonna change phone because of the gimbal.

  • Looks like it is sold out now

  • Seems like back in stock now.. just bought one :-)

  • For these do they only function through an app, or would you be able to use all its stabilising features during, say, a Facebook live video?

    • +1

Stabilising features work when the gimbal is on. (phone can be even turned off)

But to use all remote control features, u need Zhiyun app or Filmic Pro <- which is the BEST camera app & supports zhiyun smooth gimbal)

      • Filmic pro is that the one $24.99? Is it good for editing?

        • Good for filming. Can disable iphone’s digital stabilization & record maximum bitrate. Can also film Log or Flat color profile.

  • +2

    Just bought one..not sure why?

    • Well it was a great price, you just HAD to.

  • Moza Mini-MI Smartphone Gimbal is better than this and more cheap.

    • how cheap? I see in TEDS $149. Smooth atm is $103.

  • It's back to stock again.

  • ordered yesterday, arrive today. pretty impressive piece of kit, will be using it for work. thanks!

    • Are you in Melbourne, not received mine yet,I am in Melbourne though.

    • Hi,
can you please help me to check if you trigger buttons are responsive? Coz mine sometimes work, sometimes they don't. Thanks

  • Can't download zy app it say it not available: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zhiyun.zyp…
