Free Online Will - Normally $150 [EXPIRED]

1600

In aid of National Law Week 2011, Slater & Gordon are giving away their Online Will Service for FREE for 1 week only.
This service normally costs $150.

There are no hidden catches and if your circumstances permit, you can go through, do your will and receive it as a PDF, without ever having to talk to a Lawyer or pay a fee.

Enjoy…it is not very often that a Law Firm gives something away for FREE :)

WOW I never realised what the Oz Bargain effect would be, Sorry for the server issues and slowness. I just added a an extra processor and I will add an extra server tonight, just to cope with Oz Bargains….if you have any questions you can email me at [email protected]

Hi eveyone, just a quick update. I am currently working on speeding it up so it can cope with all of the Oz Bargain enquiries. I twill be faster in the morning.
Also I found out that as a new member I only get 5 posts a day and I have used them up today. If you have any questions please email me at the above email address.

Slater & Gordon are a reputable law firm from my days working in that industry. The offers definetely worth checking out.

I guess the benefit to Slater & Gordon from this would be side-effect advertising, and those people that look for legal services often keep to the same firm/lawyer.

    good on slater and gordon.

On your site after you sign up there are two options a free online will or one for $150.

Is the free one the one you choose or is it the $150 one, which after you complete, you get given for free - needs some clarification

    Thanks

    • +4

      Hi Pete,

      Choose the Free one…

I hate how my mind is always fixated on technology :(

    • +3

I read the same thing too.

    • +4

Same… And I do legal work.

      • +17

Same, but I really do need to pee at the moment so I might be biased.

    • +1

i posted that as first comment and it got removed :(

    • I read the same thing!

    • +2

Same! Doesn't help that some places might sell the Wii (by itself) for $150 as well

    • The Wii worth about $150 as well, and I prefer to receive a free Wii, though I already have one at home.

  • +8

  • +1

This should be another blow out! :)

  • Awesome, thank you. I should of done this ages ago. Have now, just need 2 signatures to make it legal.

  • Guys, thank you for the great sharing. Wondering, let's say, if i have applied for this free will, and assuming in the future, i want to make some changes… does it cost me any extra money?

    • +10

      Hey there,

You can make changes to the Will for 3 month after you have completed and received your documents.
After that time the interview is hidden from your homepage and not able to be restarted.
The reason we hide it after 3 months is in case there has been any legislative changes during that time, we dont want you making changes to an out of date format. If there hasnt been any changes (which actually occur very rarely) we are happy for you to email support and get it made available for editing again.

      Hope that made sense

      Steve

      • that is great Celidh. impressive.

    • From what I've read from one of the files which accompanied the attached will, it's free to amend within 7 days.

  • … and if anyone needs someone to leave something to … ;)

AAMI offer a free online will to one and all (don't even need to be an AAMI customer)

    http://www.aami.com.au/special-offers/free-wills-online

Original will gets stored by some large law firm in Melbourne (whose name I can't recall at the moment) for free

    • +1

      Hi Bandit74,

There are actually quite a few free wills out there, but whilst I will admit to being biased, I would recommend you download the sample documents and check them out.

The one at S&G Online tends to be much more comprehensive that the others on the market.

      regards

      Steve

  • With regards to the option for a "free" or a "$150" will, are there both the same? I don't really want to create a will for free if it turns out to be watered down version of the paid one.

    • +10

I can guarantee that it is not a watered down will. It is identical to the $150 version…minus the fee.

      Steve

  • Awesome deal, have been meaning to do a will for YEARS, thanks!!

  • +1

Members of CPSU (and maybe other unions) get free access to S&G's online will anytime (need an access code you get from the union).

    • +1

That is correct (and yes there are a few unions with access).

These union agreements will continue after this current promotion for Law Week

  • +2

I think S&G's server is choking on OzBargain members.

  • +1

Server just went down in the middle of trying to complete this :)

  • Ozbargained I suspect

  • +13

with all the junk ozbargainers buy, you would expect something like this to be ozbargained. everybody wants to make sure their junk go to the appropriate beneficiaries!

  • Server Down?

    • +5

yeah server gone - now everyone get off so I complete this

      • +6

        you first.

  • Ceilidh…what's up with your server?

  • Once completed how long does it take till they email you it?

I finished mine but still have not got my email

  • In India it is much simpler. First the spouse gets the leftover money. And then when both parents pass away each child gets an equal share. That way there is no bias and everyone gets what they deserve.

    • +2

      and they have papadums!!!

      • +2

Nice stereotyping into a serious comment.
How is the fish and chups going lately?
        =P

  • Nice timing, I've been meaning to get a will done for years. Will be interesting to see how this pans out.

  • +1

Same - good timing this was on my "2011 I must do" list thanks

  • She's dead, Jim…

    • It appears that reports of death are premature

  • +1

    Hi Ceilidh,
I'm not really familiar with online will. Does it mean, your company will store it on unlimited basis (or is there any define period?)? And also, how can someone else access the will if I suddenly died (do I have to share my ID/pwd with someone else so that he/she can access it in case something happen)?
Also, will it be free to cancel in the future (I read above that we have 3 months to modify, but how about cancellation)? I don't know if someday we decide that it's better to make another will with someone else, can we cancel the one on your storage?

    • +1

i believe the "online" part of the process is just for the preparation of the will (ie as opposed to sitting down with a lawyer in their office for example). once you complete the process online, you get the will as a PDF, which you would then need to print and sign etc to make it 'active' (dunno what the proper legal term for this would be). you then arrange for the storage of this hardcopy will yourself. S&G can do it for you.

re: cancellation, maybe you should check out their FAQ topics on Amending or revoking a Will > Can I revoke my Will after it is signed?

the FAQ looks pretty good actually… will probably answer most of the questions you might have.

  • NOT KNOW WHAT'S THIS

    • +3

No yelling in the house, you kids.

  • +2

If you do this online will make sure you do it in "me time" to let you concentrate. No screaming kids around as that may be distracting! It is taking awhile to load each new page so you could register and save to do later when their server isn't so busy

  • +5

i'd like to add another + vote for OP upping the processor/server to cater for ozbargain demand :)

  • Advice needed I gave got 88% completed and pressed save but it is still loading …..should I just wait and wait?

    • Just wait, I was able to complete all steps with heaps of waiting.

    • +3

I wouldn't wait too long, it's the quick and the dead around here.

  • The benefit to Slaters is that they will now have your details, and in the unfortunate event of your passing, it is likely that they will also act for your estate/beneficiaries in regards to your Probate (which is required to make a Will enforceable).

Lawyers don't make much from Will (if any in some cases). It is the Probate and other legal services which they make money from.

    • +1

That is not right. The online will created has not been signed. So, unless you give them a signed copy, they can't probate the will.

  • Anyone got theirs emailed to them yet?

  • +2

Thanks All good! I got mine (email) within 3 mins.

  • +39

I can imagine the Wills of fellow OzBargainers.

Upon my death I leave the following to my wife :

1 x 1 year subscription to Comodo Internet Security
And all my Lonely Planet Iphone Apps to places I had no intention on ever going.

have you seen the one about Evan Longoria? +ve this comment if you read that as Eva Longoria and not Evan Longoria (MLB player).

    • Phew! At least I'm not the only one!!!

  • Awesome deal, been putting this off for way too long. Done mine now and had it show up within minutes.

  • "UNABLE TO PROCEED ONLINE - YOU NEED LEGAL ADVICE" :( I guess I'll go without a will for a while longer then.

    • +3

assuming that's because your affairs are more complex than covered by the standard will, it probably means there's even more reason for you to get one done…?

  • hm..I just registered but got the following error when login:
Exception of type 'System.Web.HttpUnhandledException' was thrown.
User folder not found for username: [email protected] name: 'lastname', 'firstname'[email protected] parent FolderId: 211 Click the link below to go back.

May be it is not my time to provide a will.

    Any idea Stephen?

  • IIRC this is the Law Firm that taught the young Julia Gillard the basic 'tricks of the trade' - that might be a good or bad thing depending upon your perspective! he he he

  • +9

Hope you got your server a free will, looks like it is dead.

    • +3

I think that joke's been killed, it's time to lay it to rest.

    • Someone who OZB'd the HP microserver deal send it on to S&G

  • +4

Deadset the best bargain i have seen in my lifetime.

  • I believe in determinism.

  • do i have to finish the will within this offer timeframe to get it for free? or can i sign up for it and finish it later….

  • how come every single thing i click it says
"UNABLE TO PROCEED ONLINE - YOU NEED LEGAL ADVICE"

It also asks me to go to meet up with an Estate Planner or sthing, do I need to pay for that?

    • how come everyone is getting at least close to the end?
I am like stuck on 10%!

      • I finished it quite quickly. The difference would be in you have real estate etc it makes the will more complex, which means you need something more comprehensive than this basic will.

        • +1

in order to get it for free,
          u need to be
          married &
and just want 100% of ur money to go to ur immediate family - wife and kids?

Can i have a response as to how true my statement above is?

          thanks in advance ozbargainers!

        • pretty much…. although there are a few other bits and pieces….
as you found, anything too complicated and it stops and advises you to get legal advice

        • thanks andy19363!
i got stopped at 10% and it doesn't like my answers, cos they are always the one on the left, not the right! :D suxx for me………

  • +1

Now no one will be able to neg this deal until he is dead and it is not working ha!
    Oh wait…

  • Thanks so much!

  • +1

    WILL give this a go.

  • +13

    Hi Guys,

I will try to answer as many questions as possible in this post as being new on this site I only get 5 posts a day. (please note: none of the answers below should be regarded as legal advice. I am a Techo, not Lawyer, but I have been doing this long enough to "offer opinions" on "fictitious scenarios")

Twisty - Your Completed Will documents will be emailed to you automatically within minutes of clicking the finish button (unless you chose "Postal Delivery"), if you don't receive them within an hour email support (or me…my email is in the original post) and I will sort it out for you.

surat - The folder error you got was, as most people expected because the site was being "Oz Bargained" :). The site received a 50 fold increase in traffic when I posted this on Wednesday. All errors should now be fixed, if not feel free to email me and I will correct them. Even us Techos can't be perfect all the time, but we get there.

molla22 - To qualify for the free offer, you just need to register by Sunday night. You can complete your will at your leisure. You don't have to do it in one go, you can save and return anytime.

    cateyneow - The will caters for Single, Married, DeFacto and Same Sex relationships. It also allows you to leave gifts of goods or cash to anyone (inc charities). You tend to get the UNABLE TO PROCEED ONLINE - YOU NEED LEGAL ADVICE" when you;

    a) have circumstances that should be catered for in a more complex estate plan (such as a partner or child with diminished capacity)
    b) have circumstances that may cross legislative boundaries, i.e. property in another country may attract "Death Duty (Taxes)" in that country.
    c) are trying to produce a will which does not cater to the beneficiaries you are responsible for (i.e. leaving out a child)
    d) and other complex circumstances where speaking to a lawyer is unavoidable because of your particular financial or personal circumstances including for example complexities such as being in a business partnership, owning shares in a private company or control a trust. Many other 'simple will kits' often let you complete a simple will even if you do have these issues and a simple will is insufficient.

Whilst anyone can produce a "simple will" for any scenario, if your circumstances are complex, it may not achieve what you want and end in failed gifts, incorrect gifts, or even legal dispute. That is why the site directs some people away from the online will and recommend that they speak to a solicitor (which doesn't have to be Slater & Gordon…although you do get the first hour long consultation both Fee & Obligation Free…and yes that was a shameless plug :)

I hope this was useful…any more questions I will try to answer in another epic post. If you have any legal questions rather than general questions you want addressed send them to me and I'll pass them to a lawyer for response.

    regards Steve
