  • Definitely metabox for best value. They have a couple of new models just launched.

I'm unfamiliar with this brand. How do they compare to Lenovo? In terms of the build quality, keyboard etc.

The prices certainly look reasonable, for the specs.

      • Search up Jarad Tech on YT, he's done plenty of reviews on their PCs.

    • Metabox is a mixed bag. The laptops tend to have decent specs for the price. However, if you go high end, then the laptop cooling tends to be inadequate and you will end up with a machine that is thermal throttling a significant amount of time.

The second thing to consider is how much is warranty and tech support worth to you. On paper both of those look like they would be great. Not so much in practice. I can say, based on several issues that I had over the years, that you will need to go into a considerable amount of effort to chase and follow up everything, over weeks or months. With things like BIOS issues and updates, you are simply out of luck. You are probably better off returning the laptop straight away if you spot a BIOS problem.

      • I can't seem to find any reviews for this model (Alpha-X NH58ED) but the specs look fantastic for the price, at least in comparison to the ThinkPad X1 Extreme I've been ogling for a couple of months now. It's a shame about the offset keyboard though (which I know is pretty standard for 15.6 inch gaming laptops). Is there anywhere in stores (aside from Perth) where Metabox laptops can be seen in person before purchase?

        • I ordered that one already.

$1500 now for a pretty high end laptop, $1500 in 2 or 3 years for another one to replace it, and $500 in your savings.

  • HP Spectre 360

I'm assuming you meant a gaming laptop?

How dare you assume with all the information provided by OP!

    • a mix between gaming laptop and study , I am studying I.T .

found a dell i7 laptop in a dumpster, new SSD and works great.

$600 for a laptop is enough unless gaming.

  • Anything with replaceable parts. I bought an MSI GE62 a few years ago and regret not paying a bit more for a model that you can upgrade the GPU.

Alienwares are big and heavy and not really portable or pleasant to carry around (we have two of them). Depends on your needs for a laptop.

If you are a gamer, for that price, you could get a desktop for gaming, and a light laptop for on the go/travelling stuff.

No point getting something like an alienware for non gaming. I remember my daughter not being able to run a lot of software on it when she was in highschool because it was too fast!

Not really a fan of alienware laptops here, if you can't tell. But if you are gamer it's a great option.

    • thanks for that. Thats a helpful post. What about MSI ? that looks like a good mix between work and gaming.

    "hit me"
Yeah I will hit you because 3500 is too much better save some $ for rainy days.

    Kidding. I am just jelaous.

    • HAHA, no you are right.

What are your requirements, do you want portable with less powerful specs, or a beast for gaming that is also very heavy. for $3500 you can pretty much buy anything but the most expensive notebooks. 5k will get you pretty much the most powerful notebook available.

  • what are you wanting to do with the laptop?

You might be better off getting a desktop and tablet combo.

If you want to game desktop is better - gaming laptops heavy as.
A tablet will allow you a little more portability to do other things.

More and more these days i am not even powering up my personal laptop.
I tend to head for the tablet as it loads faster.

If i want to game i have desktop and consol.

If you require a laptop for school you can just switch tablet / laptop

    • Yeh you are speaking a lot of sense.

  • I'll sell you a laptop for $3499 no worries.

  • Meta box is having a sale right now, so they'd probably be the best value wise.

Search up Jarrod's Tech (hope I git that right) on YT fir reviews on them. They generally seem pretty good.

You need to tell us WHAT your usage is. For everyday and light work? Do you need a mobile workstation for work? For gaming? Do you draw and design?

    • Gaming, and coding.

  • if you require portability:

Macbook Pro or Dell XPS 13
HP Spectre x360 are shit quality

    • MSI STEALTH?

      • The build quality on the Stealth is pretty good, not amazing though. It's highly unlikely you'll bend/dent it unless you were trying to on purpose.

I find 15" laptops a little unwieldy as a daily driver though, so I wonder if one that is 13-14" would be better for you (unless you're fine with carrying an extra 2kg?)
