Looking at the G3 for an all round laptop. Wife is a teacher and kids will be doing assignments & some gaming.

I'll need to have a bigger SSD. Can you add a 2TB 2.5 inch HDD, and have the 256GB SSD just for Windows?

    • External, yes. Internal, not if you take out the SSD probably.

    • +3

G3 has both 2.5" and msata bays, not sure which one the SSD takes up but definitely expandable.

    • If this doesn't have the Intel Optane thing then it should be ok to upgrade. You'd have to check if the M2 slot or the normal sata 2.5" slot is not being used though.

I opened up a G3 that had a 1TB HDD and that had the M2 slot occupied by Intel Optane 16GB stick.

      • +1

You can disable Intel optane in the PC settings then replace it with a regular m.2 drive no worries.

Optane is meant to accelerate the HDD by caching recently/often accessed files on the drive but if you have an SSD as the OS drive it's not needed anymore.

  • g3 cooling is no match for i7. go for g5 if you want i7, and in general g5 is better build quality.

    • I might go for that one instead, as it has a 1TB HDD.

  • Looking for gaming laptop for nephew. That G5 has a GTX1060 Max Q. Looks to be 15% slower than a normal laptop GTX1060 processor and slower memory. Price is good though!

  • G3 has better cpu with 6 cores. G3 better than G5 at this price point

    • +3

Lol. Both will suffer thermal throttling anyway.
      Not to mention a 8750H is epic over-kill for a 1050Ti.
Ideally they would swap CPU's to have a better match for their GPU's.

      • +4

If you are using it to render videos or CAD work, then having a more powerful CPU with a mid range GPU can be the sweet spot when it comes to CUDA/openCL rendering.

For instance when rendering source 4k 10 bit 4:2:2 footage in Adobe Media Encoder to 1080p 8 bit 4:2:0 H264, CPU will be utilised 100% while GPU just a little bit to help speed things along.

      • Both will suffer thermal throttling anyway.

        People can't see beyond headlines.

    • +2

G3 has 256GB SSD. G3 better than G5 at this price point.
G5 has GTX 1060. G5 better than G3 at this price point.

(I'm picturing a caveman as I type this).

      Be specific regarding its use-case.

The G3 will be the better machine for most, however if somebody only uses it for gaming, the G5, with its significantly more powerful GTX1060, will be the better choice.

  • How do the g series compare against alienware ?

    • +1

Alienware are Dell's premium gaming machines while G-series is more like the budget to mid range gaming.
You pay a premium for Alienware for both better quality and higher end graphics cards but also because of the name associated with it.

  • I don't know much laptops but need to buy for myself. How this compares with https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/447438?

    • XPS is way smaller and lighter but at the same time more expensive.
XPS could be compared to MacBooks while this one is like a "normal" laptop. Heavy and with a pretty bad plastic case.

Personally, I would go with this one if weight/size is not an issue. Just buy another 8gb RAM module.

    • First decison you need to make is what your preferred screen size is. This is 15" where as the other you linked to is 13".

  • +1

Make sure to check reviews before deciding.

  • +3

The G5 is $1279.20. This coupon this time has a max discount $1000 instead $300 so you get the full 20% off.

    • +1

      Thanks. Updated.

  • +2

Isn't this a better buy at this price point?:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/447216

    • You get a smaller battery in the MSI.

      • Slightly yes, but also increased storage in the MSI. Is the 1050 Ti a Max Q in the G3?

        • MaxQ in the 1060.

  • Am I the only one that gets triggered when companies highlight the W,A,S,D keys on laptops?

    • +1

Yeah looks clumsy. It's a gaming thing though, so unfortunately gotta roll with it.

    • Don't see whats so bad about it.
Don't see whats so good about it either.
Either way it wouldn't affect my decision to buy a laptop.

  • +1

Both laptops have a pretty average screen on them with low brightness. The G3 looks decent but the G5 looks like a chunky old Dell laptop.

Other than that they're both pretty good.

  • +1

Double check the brightness of the G3's. Last I saw the G3 had a brightness of 210 nits which is shockingly bad compared to the 410 of the Xps range.

  • The G5 with 1050Ti also looks decent value if you want the G5 instead of the G3. The i7 probably overkill for most folks.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-G5-15-Gaming-Laptop-8th-Gen…

    AU $1,119.20 after discount

  • Why is the g5 more expensive than g3? Apart from gpu, it seems to be lower spec?

    Also g5 description says 1050….

    • I believe the G5 is a better chassis with more cooling but also thicker. So….

    • Because these are laptops with non upgradeable CPU/GPU so they can tempt you to buy/customise the correct but usually more costly laptop specs you want.

  • +1

So your choices are better CPU with worse GPU or better GPU with worse CPU.

    • There are other small difference in the builds.
But yes, the main difference between these two models is CPU vs GPU.

  • Theres also a G3 with i5-8300, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, GTX 1050 TI for $1087.20 for those who want a bit cheaper. Its probably better to pay a bit extra for an i7 G3 though.

  • GTX1050ti is really not powerful enough for gaming i got a 'gaming laptop' with a GTX1050ti and it strugglessssss on triple A titles

    • I own a Matebook X Pro that has a Nvidia MX150, nowhere near as powerful as the 1050ti, yet I can play Apex Legends at 30fps and Civ at high settings. I find it hard to believe the GTX1050ti isn't powerful enough for gaming… What games are you running that struggle?

      • Fallout 4, Total war War Hammer 2 etc all struggle on anything other then low to mid settings

        • What's your other specs? Pre-built PC or laptop?

          • @Clear: 16GB ram
            Intel Core i7-7700HQ 2.80Ghz
            1THD with a 128 SSD

            • +2

@Trying2SaveABuck: Shouldn't be an issue with those specs. I know there are FO4 1050Ti optimisation mods but for the others there has to be something causing it. Google should know.

Laptop? There are settings that can throttle. I'll have to find them.

              • @Clear: One setting that will throttle is battery saving mode.
Don't know any others off the top of my head.

                • @FireRunner: I think that was it. Power settings not using the full potential.

    • +1

It's not going to run all AAA titles on absolutely max. everything. You'd want 1060+ for that.

  • Any better gaming laptops from Lenovo or HP in same price range?
Is this G5 the best gaming machine you can get for less than $1300?

    • Totally the best gaming laptop for the price

Posted the same deal a little while ago and got 7 upvotes. TA give me your secret

    • +2

      Haha same here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/445187

Didn't repost as figured these were basically the going price now judging by the lack of upvotes.

      • 17 +1s for my first time
47 +1s for the next time

I guess it depends if you can get enough initial votes to get to front page.

        • Night time usually works best.

    • +3

      Fanboi's basically.

  • +1

Got the g5 with a 1060 for the missus for work and odd gaming for me..

Be warned, this is not a small/light laptop. Yea its portable, but lugging it around, especially with the brick powerpack - adds up.

Design is lacking, but its a good laptop specs to price.

    :)

  • can i attach a freesync monitor to this to make use of adaptive sync on the 1050ti?

  • I would suggest having a look at these before purchase. Like other posters said , poor screens and heavy. I was keen till I seen them in person. But if you need the specs and are on a budget, they will win.

  • This 20% off keeps on extending which is great.
TA can you ask Dell to have a discount on the G7 :)

  • Any recommendation for Engineering design laptop, ones with dedicated graphic card? Can these two be engineering laptop.

    • Depends on what field and what you're using it for.

For design work, gaming laptops are not ideal. If you're into manufactoring or designwork (autoCAD or Solidworks) these will run ok but not well as the cards are not designed to work with a consumer level graphics card. Preferably get a workstation pc or laptop like the precision series if you're doing that. For everything else these will be fine, I have a 6 year old alienware that runs stuff like MATLAB, Pspice, Multisim and Simulink without any issues.

  • Got one of these Dell G3 i5 for my partner, as soon as it arrived, booted, crashed, LOL!
Called in Dell support and the guy on the other side said that at least another of their customers had the same problem.
    Anyone received theirs OK?
Sent it off, but Wot a Hassle…
