Pantagonia seems to be a good outdoor brand?

    • +7

      Highly respected yes.

    • I believe most people consider it to be on the same tier as North Face, or better, depending on who you listen to. But I think they’re both considered to be a “casual” brand by people who buy these things for outdoor use?

Either way, should be good quality.

      • +3

        Patagonia is top tier

      • +2

Patagonia is pretty top tier, mostly a cut above North Face in terms of technical performance. But it definitely depends on the product.

They also offer a very good repair service - never had to use it but there's plenty of stories of people getting very old gear repaired for free or at a really good price. Their products are also ethically produced + environmentally friendly (eg traceable down, recyclable materials, no sweatshops etc)

North Face focuses a bit more on 'outdoor fashion'. Although that's not to say that Patagonia hasn't become a bit of a fashion statement itself, but I'd say they still tend to be true to their roots as a business and focus a bit more on the technical aspect.

      • Depends on the particular garment. Both The North Face and Patagonia are considered top tier and, due to their popularity, branched out into making more gear for the casual user.

However, both brands still make exceptional gear that you will pay significantly for.

    • Bought their Nano Air Hoody last year. The most comfortable, flexible, high quality and good looking winter jacket I've ever bought. Perfect if you are going to snow or cold regions.

Yes they are expensive but if you can pick one up on special then go for it. Not sure about this particular jacket but the Nano Air is slim fit and so I had to go one size larger than I normally would.

  • Would love to know if Shopback is eligible

  • +4

it is a trendier logo than macpac…all the private school kids wear these

    • +6

Private school kids are sheep. Not trendy.

      • +2

I think you just described trends, but made it sound like a problem to want to wear things your friends wear too

        • Not really. Private school kids tend to wear what their older brothers/sisters wore, even what their parents wore when they were younger because it is part of being a private school kid. It is more of an unofficial uniform than a trend.

  • +21

Good quality and they’re sweatshop free and very ethical which is a nice bonus. Worth the $ imo.

    • +1

Plus they have a lifetime guarantee. If anything breaks (within reason), you just take it to one of their stores to get fixed. They have a whole workshop in their Sydney store.

      • +10

Yes. I've got an old Patagonia puffer jacket I bought over 10 years ago. Without a receipt I asked if they could fix a few rips on it, thinking that I'd get a run around and a 'tsk tsk'. But no, credit it to them, they fixed it, free and no questions asked, ready for another winter.

The fix obviously can't make it look like new again, but still, it's amazing to see services like this in an era of fast fashion.

    • +5

+1 to this. I reckon worth the price difference - lifetime guarantee, the option for repairs, likely better build and higher-quality product. Patagonia is an incredible company and worth supporting.

    • Example of them being a great company here:
      https://www.sbs.com.au/news/patagonia-donates-10-million-tru…

  • Thanks for posting OP, bought one

  • Does anyone know what their sizing is like? Over or under size in general?

    • Also wondering this

      https://www.patagonia.com.au/pages/size-chart-tops-mens

Seems smaller than macpac? Not sure

      • +1

I did a comparison with macpac and it appears Patagonia S is similar to Macpac XS

        • Thanks, so M is probably similar to macpac S.

          Very helpful cheers

    • +1

      TTS in my opinion.

    • I'm between S/M and bought M. I tried it on before purchasing it and found the S a little too small (short on the arm length). M was a little less tight fit, and arms just a bit longer for me but was ok.

      • how tall are you? im 6 foot 3, looking at going for a large….

        • I'm about 5'8" i think?

          • @ryf: uh oh I'm in the same situation between S/M, 5"10 and bought an S

looks like it might not fit & they're out of stock so i can't exchange for an M…free refunds in store I think

  • +8

tempted. but it is not that cold to wear this sort of jacket in Sydney..

    • Yea maybe useful 5 days a year.

  • +1

    damnit already have the macpac

  • +15

Patagonia, RM Williams and a Chino…. you're set for young liberals success.

    • +2

Must be beige chinos, there're gangs of these guys at my work!

    • +1

I almost bought this jacket but stopped at checkout because I reflected on just this point. I'd rather not look like a aspirational liberal voter. To be honest $170 is a long way close to buying a jacket you'll really love.

Although I would say I do love Patagonia and I think RM Williams do brilliant shoes. But as a city dweller I simply don't need this stuff.

  • Whats the code for 10% off?

What’s Patagonia like compared with Kathmandu?

    • +6

Patagonia are B Corp certified and their warranty policy is incredible. There's no comparison in my opinion.

    • +3

Kathmandu is of inconsistent quality due to their mixed sourcing. A bit like how Coles/Woolworths have their own homebrands sourced from different manufactures depending on the season and price. The trouble is Kathmandu put on a premium price to create the illusion of quality. Pure anecdotal evidence from friends has shown that some Kathmandu gear has been solid however other items have fallen apart with little use.

Kathmandu have a bit of a bad rep among outdoor enthusiasts (bushwalkers/climbers not the 4WD/campervan crowd). Patagonia on the other hand is far more reputable due to their controls on production, this means consistent quality backed up by a solid warranty.

What’s Patagonia like compared with Kathmandu?

It's wheelie bin day where I live, which has inspired me to make the following comparison:

Patagonia make good products, while Kathmandu make rubbish.

  • Thanks bought M

  • Ordered 10.29am this morning and it still says processing, doesnt looks good

  • ah….I ordered an S at 11:37am and it still says processing. Was worried abt it being too small, but I guess it's moot if we don't get it lol

    • Mine is still processing, no email yet but looks very likely to be cancelled shortly

damn. really wanted this. Thanks for post anyway OP.
