I've been looking at their prices the last month or so and this seems to be their going rate.

    • +6

It is and has been for at least the last 6 months, since thats when I signed up to it.

Its a good price IMO - but it is also their standard price.

  • Such a good deal.

Can't wait for my TPG contract to finish and then Exetel for life.. frack it I am gonna risk it for the biscuit and pray they stay in business forever and have really good performance.

    • +5

As someone who's been on exetel for many years, the only reason I'm still with them is that it's never a good time to be without internet for weeks while I am churned over. Otherwise I'd have ditched them ages ago.

      • +7

Are you able to elaborate please macrocephalic? Why do wish you’d ditched them? Just wondering cause I’m looking for different telco’s that have the best deals, not doubting you but. I’m with barefoot, and they’re okay but I don’t think I ever get the 50 I’m paying for.

        • +6

Been with them from the start - only because I hear horror stories with all ISPs.

Service pretty reliable, speed good, but it was pretty pathetic when I lost FTTN NBN for 3 weeks due to a problem with the supply beyond the boundary point - for them to refund $10 of the $80 monthly. Upon me querying, improved it to $15 instead of the $60 that I was claiming. Then didn't answer the next email and I gave up. So they won based on my time being worth more than someone's in Sri Lanka. Excellent strategy.

Also cost me around $100 of mobile data charges and had to buy their POS modem to prove it wasn't the $250 one I bought to replace their previous POS modem that died, before they'd schedule out a technician.

So just another bunch trying to compete on prices and leaving themselves no room to stand behind their service.

BTW, got it fixed and my BYO modem 15% faster than their recommended ZTE thing that can't even cover half my house. All looks good on the brochure.

          • @Janko: That modem business would have driven me up wall, as would the disruption of service without reasonable compensation. That’s pretty sub par I have to say. :/ Sounds like it’s been a bit of a pain in the tuchus.

          • @Janko: Do tell what is your better BYO modem please.
            Important information!

I a few times a year I suffer failures on my line (ADSL). The line continues to sync, but a PPP connection cannot be made (i.e. the line is fine, but I can't establish a secure connection with their system). I never get any notice that this has happened - even if it's a known outage. Often it can be rectified by simply resetting the port on the dslam, but to get that done I have to ring tech support, sit on hold for 20-60 minutes, go through the usual tech support script (do you have any other devices on the line, etc), and finally get someone to reset the port. They then don't want to wait on the line while your modem reboots, so, if that doesn't fix the issue then you have to ring back and be put at the end of the queue. It's such a hassle that I don't even bother calling unless the net has been down for more than a day, sometimes it comes good on it's own, and if I can avoid having to call tech support then I will.

They have an online ticketing system, but tickets don't normally get answered until a week later.

The speeds during peak hours can be pretty bad. I have the ability to work from home, something which I take advantage of sometimes, but on more than one occasion I have had to pack up and head into the office because I couldn't even sustain a VPN connection to the office (line stats hadn't changed).

I'm sure that there are problems with all ISP's, but I'm more than ready to take the chance on someone else. I'm supposed to be getting NBN later this year; unless exetel offer a truly amazing deal I'll be trying someone else.

          • @macrocephalic: This also sounds irritating. I gotta say, between yours, and Janko’s post I’m not exactly leaning towards Exetel.

      • I moved from after being with iinet for 12 years on ADSL then 6 months NBN. Have been happy with iinet but I find it does not matter who you are with for NBN they are all just wholesalers for NBNCo so decided to go with the best price.

Comments on Extel NBN (FTTN)… I find no difference at all in speeds or quality of service, get exactly the same speeds I was getting with iitnet NBN but at a cheaper price. The only issues I had was at changeover from ADSL to NBN which took 3 weeks without any internet and was out of control of iinet. The only thing that I find impressive with iinet is support is there 24/7 but once connected you you really don't need them. Took 2 weeks to changeover from iinet but I had Voip number that I was keeping which took the time, otherwise no issues with changing over once appointment made it all happened smoothly in a few hours.
I used my own Modem/router and Voip box, got a No lock-in plan just in case I wasn't happy I could move. So far very happy with extel. Anyway that's my experience.

        • +2

does not matter who you are with for NBN

This is just wrong. It absolutely matters and crap RSPs like this will oversell CVC much more than a more expensive provider.

      • @macrocephalic
what was the Exetel process for churning?
which provider did churn from and is that how long exactly did it take?
which type of service did you churn with, HFC, FTTP, FTTN?

    • +2

In my first 3 months with them I had 3 drop outs. Lasting as long as 14 hours. Each time calling them you spend ages going thru the standard script, then it’s off to techies for support and the risk of losing $180 if it’s your fault, ie, nothing they can do.

Every time I call, it suddenly fixes by itself before the tech comes, so gotta call to cancel or else pay the call out fee.

I stopped calling now and just wait for the eventual self fix, but yea, you get what you pay for with Exetel.

      • I had issues with dropouts but with iinet at around 11pm/midnight but usually came back on in about 10-15 mins. I really don't know if they are actually issues with the wholesaler or NBNCo. I found NBNCo is to blame for a lot of the issues.

  • +18

Standard on-going deal , has always been this price.

  • +1

how is Exetel in general? I am pretty easy-going as long as my Netflix and gaming doesnt drop out. Reviews on PR website are horrible but I generally take those with a grain of salt as more people put in the effort to complain than praise.

    • +3

From the (light) research I did when choosing my provider earlier this year, those reviews largely came from the adsl2 days and were warranted then. Their nbn offerings are very competitive and the couple of people I've spoken to have had no issues.

    • +1

for me, its been pretty well with youtube via apple tv and gaming at the same time. all comes down to your area, line quality and nbn connection type

      • Its been pretty good for me, I am on Tangerine atm getting 35-46mbps, but the promo price will be ending next month, so money talks!

    • I switched from TPG to Exetel. Apart from the first two weeks which I sometimes have no internet, I have no problem so far afterwards. I usually get around 43-45mbs for my 50mbs plan. During peak hour sometimes can go as low as around 35mbs but it still doesnt affect me streaming video, sometimes I even stream 4k video from youtube..

    • +2

As long as nothing goes wrong your fine, but if something does you better get praying.

  • Are these guys throttling bittorrent and VPN?

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2385638

    • +2

Yikes, you do realise that thread was from 4 years ago?!

    • I know they used to, but not sure these days but the reason for throttling torrents was it was such a heavy use of the pipe back in the day, but these days Netflix and other streaming uses so much pipeline it makes throttling torrents irrelevant.

    • No they aren't. There are newer threads on whirlpool that clear this up.

    • In my experience they don't.

    • Just pay for a cheap seedbox. They won't throttle FTP transfers.

  • +3

don't call their support line too much otherwise they will deem you unprofitable and cut you off.

    • +2

wait what is this for real or just bad experience with tech support?

      • this is real. it happened to me a few years ago. i don't know if they have updated their contract, but it used to have a clause in there about it.

    • +4

You'd have to be a masochist to call their support line much. Unfortunately it's the only solution to technical issues, if you lodge a ticket then no one will look at it for weeks.

    • +1

TPG did that to me back when I had my ADSL2+ with them and was always getting <1Mbps. They literally told me to leave if I didn't like the service. So, I did!

  • Geez. Same price as my 25Mbps ABB but unlimited data.

My house only does 30Mbps so I doubt that I'd even notice if peak time speed was crap (I can afford to lose 20Mbps anyway!).

PS: Anything I can do about my crappy 30Mbps max theoretical speeds?

    • If you're in an area serviced by fixed wireless providers such as Uniti/Nuskope (now Superloop apparently) they may be worth looking at.

    • did you remove all extensions from the line

    • +1

Check your internal wiring. Ensure you only have one copper cable line into 1 phone port. If you have multiple phone port/ RJ45 ports in your house, remove those lines/ disconnect them completely from the point where all the copper cables meet up (junction point etc). However you'll need a cabler or electrician to do this I believe. It can make a huge difference to your speeds! I've seen people jump 20-30Mbps if their internal wiring is completed correctly.

      • I tried asking the NBN technician and they said pfft, no.

Yes we have a BUTTLOAD of RJ45 connections in the house. Like, 5 or so.

        • +1

Yeah if you have 5 RJ45 ports then that could definitely be contributing to your speeds Beca obviously the weakest link is the copper so you want to ensure your internal wiring is up to scratch. I'd try and see if you can get a cabler out to do a quote. Explain your situation and find someone who has experience in this. It wouldn't be a hard job, I've heard it cost people around the $100-150 range? Could be worth it for a 5-10 year investment in your home internet speeds. See what they say

          • @slosh: RJ45 are network connections. You need to look at the telephone ones which are RJ11 or RJ12, can't remember which it is.

            • @OzB123: You're right yes, my bad. RJ11*

        • Get an electrician to remove them all but the one you need.

    • 30Mbps

so were basicly back at ads2+ days again?

      • +2

Yeah, by anyone else's standards. My house got max 3Mbps on ADSL2. So NBN is actually ten times faster for me!

Which is fine for now. But in 10 years with multiple teenagers it will not be enough.

        • +1

I would've been ECSTATIC with 3Mbps but got far, far less with TPG!

    • Yeah upgrade to a wire mesh system or get a better router. Improved my speed from 25Mbps to 45Mbps.

  • Pricing is dependant on location too. I'm on Aussie BB for $2 cheaper p/m (vs 100GB Exetel plan that shows $69.99 p/m when I enter my address) for twice the amount of data, with the added bonus of no lock-in.

    • But that would give you speeds of 25 instead of 50, right?

      • Nah they're both 50 plans (Aussie BB plan is custom 200GB).

        • Oh, well done.

I'm currently on similar with Aussie, but only 25 speed.

Was this a special promotion they had?

          • @movieman: It's everyday price. You can even log into your account and adjust the plan there.

    • I checked AussieBB (https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/nbn-plans/#builder) and 100Gb at nbn 50 speed shows as $65/month (200Gb is $68/month) so not sure how you see it cheaper at ABB.

  • +13

sign up but don't complete. in few days you'll get an offer of a one off $20 discount. covers the modem shipping fee

    • Can confirm this works, received the $20.00 offer via email 1-2 days after not completing my sign-up.

    • Wonder if they'll cancel the modem for me as I dont need one, even though its free.. :/

      • +1

They can. Just have to order over the phone and they can cancel the model out for you.

        • Sweet, thanks!

        • But i want the pretty model

    • didn't get email for $20. Only reminder 'Forgot something?' Did you go through payment step?

      • +1

Took me 3 days I think

        • Received the reminder email with $20 credit, click through the link but it doesn't allow me to enter installation address hence cannot proceed. Anyone got this issue?

          • @MiaSanMia: I got the $20 reminder email today which was around 3 days after I half completed the sign up. When I tried to click through the link and fill out the form it didn't allow me to enter installation address either so couldn't procedd like you. Did you find a way around this?

            • @IRON: not yet. I called Exetel, they are aware of the issue but won't do anything, asked you to wait until the system 'self-correct' the issue. I think it's just a bait to attract new clients, hopeless!

              • @MiaSanMia: Very unprofessional. Anyone else getting this issue as well?

In the terms and condition at the bottom of the email it says you only have 3 days to make use of the $20 credit.

A $20 credit will be applied to your first Exetel invoice if you order the above service online within 3 days of first being made the offer of $20 credit. Exetel will email you advising that you have 48 hours left to place an order. Orders placed after the offer expires are not eligible for a credit. This offer is not transferrable.

        • Do you think it’ll work if you don’t have NBN in the area until end of the month or better to wait until it’s up and ready to go?

        • How do I tag someone?

          TarquinOliverNimrod

          • @bobwokeup: sorry, I'm pretty sure there's a time limit on the link.
also I don't think you can sign up in advance. The NBN has to be live.

do it with Aussie broadband instead. also 59 for only 6 months then switch to these guys.
with Aussie you can book in advance

            • +1

@follow: TarquinOliverNimrod Cool thanks mate. I thought that might be the case, cheers for the advice. I was thinking of doing that but after reading some reviews and comments on here I’m conscious that it might take weeks to transfer to Exetel and possibly be without internet, how would we survive haha

    • How do you sign up? On the website all I see is a bunch of plan options and a price and phone number at the end.

      https://www.exetel.com.au/broadband/nbn

Are you supposed to download their app and apply through that? It's the very last thing on the page.

      • enter your address
        Click order now

    • didn't work for me either… a spose its luck of the draw

  • +3

I’m with Exetel and am on this plan.
I cannot fault them. Have been with them since mid 2015.

    • +1

      MeToo

    • Came here to post this. I had some initial (FTTP) connection issues, but they were quickly sorted out by an NBNco technician. Since then Exetel has been exceptionally good value. Great speed and stability, and a free phone number which was ported without any issue from TPG. The free modem is great for VOIP (I have connected a separate wifi router with NAS, and a pihole) and my public IP address has never changed. For privacy reasons I no longer use their DNS, but it's also very fast. They recently introduced IPV6 and it was a seamless transition.

    • I am also on FTTP 50/20 Exetel, for the last 8 months. Consistently around 45+/18 during peak times. Only once have I had some troubles: for around a week( at the start of April) with my DL at peak time sometimes as low as 5mbps ! This has been rectified since I brought up the issue by support. Was going to get Aussie BB initially, but they had my area on hold for upgrade. No regrets getting Exetel instead.

      • Wow literally the same thing happened to me…

  • Im interested want to watch this thread to see if anyone currently has exetel

  • im on this plan atm, i was at my old place but because of the line quality and nbn type i was only averaging about 27mbps down but now that im in my new place with better line quality and nbn type, im getting pretty much close to 50mbps

  • I'm on this plan with Exetel since Jan2019. Haven't had an issue with a tribe of a family on streaming services and games. No complaints from the family.

Usage last couple of months is just under 1TB download /mth.

  • Signed up earlier this year, no issues with the speed.

On the one occasion that I've had to contact customer service, was on hold for close to 30 minutes before speaking with someone - problem was solved straight away. Modem I received was different to the modem I thought I was going to received. I did miss the email stating that I had been upgraded free of charge.

Although they would benefit from having a live-chat service.

  • Is there a cost if i break contract before 12 months

    • +1

      it's contract

      so yes ?

  • +2

Not an Exetel customer and I have nothing against Exetel but people should know wait times are currently very long for support https://www.exetel.com.au/contactus
    https://imgur.com/a/ZdMx9w0

    • True, but that's actually a huge positive for me. I know how much time to set aside, and I can do something else while I wait. Are there any other ISPs who publish this data?

      • +2

Um, knowing it's a 2hr wait for support might be a good thing, but having to wait that long is simply outrageous. I can't remember if I've ever waited for ABB.

Hey, internets is down! - Got it, in 2 hours we will let them know!

    • Sometimes it can be a long wait, but there is also the call back option. I've found the support staff polite, competent, and understanding.
