  • Newbie question if I have a modem and router then do I have to connect a modem, then a router then this Access Point? Secondly would this AP cover a double storey townhouse?

    • You would add the AP to your existing modem and router.

I'm sure some others can offer better suggestions for multilevel but generally speaking, the signal travels horizontally more so than vertical. It would also depend what the upper floor is made of as to how well the signal would penetrate.

Overall I think you'd be better off with an AP for each floor, or a mesh system if cabling to both floors isn't an option.

(There was some talk about multilevel use in other posts for this unit)

      • Currently have a mesh system but it doesn’t seem to handle large number of connected devices well and i find I’m having to reconnect every so often.

    • You should have no issues with this in your double storey townhouse judging from my experience

    • Coverage through floors is reduced (so slower) but does work. What really matters is distance. Walls and floors have a constant fixed “cost” of around 2dBm. But signal rapidly deteriorates with distance as an inverse square law. I bought 3 of the unifi pros for my two storey house. I probably could have gotten away with 2. But definitely couldn’t get away with 1.

The reason I bought UniFi was precisely because a single wireless router/modem wasn’t covering it. But with three WAPs there is always perfect coverage, every room, and devices just use the nearest WAP automatically. No more wireless problems. I did have to run cables but that was no big deal for me.

    • It will flood it with 2.4 and you will get decent coverage of 5.6 but you might need to put two in to get better satiation of 5.6

I think the AC Pro V2 doesn't come with power supply.

I was of the understanding that the singles include a PoE injector, the 5 packs don't.

      • You are correct

Depends on the supplier and which one you are getting.

Some dodge suppliers, will break up multi packs and sell as individual

    • Some will come with a POE injector, and some without, you need to check before ordering, otherwise you will need to purchase a POE injector if your switch doesnt support

For anyone looking for the USG as well under "PEACE" deal, cheapest I could find at the moment was here: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UniFi-Security-Gateway-Enterpris… at $164 from BudgetPC.

Unfortunately some of the earlier versions of the Ubiquiti Pro's were plagued with issues and they left a really bad taste in our mouths.
But these newer versions and the L3 Cloud controller option is actually quite good. Hadn't had any issues so far.

However I wouldn't recommend these units to home users unless you know what you're doing.
    It takes some training.

I've had a AC Pro V1 for years, and not had any issues, do you have a source for that?

I would say these units are simpler to set up then a google wifi.

      1. Install Unifi Controller on your PC
      2. Plug in Power to Access Point
      3. Launch UniFi Conttoller, Will automatically detect Access Point.
      4. Click on Adopt for the Access Point
      5. Set up your WPA Key and done
      • Checkout the ubnt forums, there are dozens of people complaining about the "Square" AC Pro's. https://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Wireless/UAP-AC-The-Squa…
We experienced overheating, DOA units, units that had to be replaced within a months, and roaming problems all the time. There was a chipset in these units which caused all of these issues. Can't remember the name exactly but it was a major issue at the time.

As for installation, you're definitely simplifying things because you've done it before. Give this to neighbour and ask them to set it up. They'd have to consult a YouTube tutorial to get it going.

The concept of a controller, and adopting access points is not very "plug and play" for the average home user who is expecting to navigating to 192.168.0.1 with a setup wizard.

As a pro user, it makes complete sense. We have a hosted Cloud Controller and we can manage all our networks remotely.

        • You must have a very messy network if you cant adopt a access point correctly, the new phone app allows you to adopt a device from your network, and assign it to a remote site with no issues, just adopt, set up for site, and then send to site, they plug in and its done and running.

I just recently adopted two new switches plugged them in and the controller showed them ready to go, not sure how long its been since you have used it last but must of been a while ago.

Every product has DOA units, so your saying becuase a dozen users had DOA units that its a crap product. Thats like saying Playstation or Xbox is crap because some users have DOA units

  • Wondering when we will have mesh wifi supporting 802.11ax …
Well seems like it has already been introduced by Netgear

    • +1

Mesh is cheap and nasty wifi. You never going to get full speed from a mesh satelitte

    • Agree, Mesh is so bad.
The only time you'd value Meshing is if you're ethernet cable's data pair dies. That way the access point can still be somewhat useful.
The likelihood of that happening is super rare though.
