Plumber or Electrician for Power Issue

I have 2 toilets and they are both triggering the power to cut out when flushing. Not sure if this will be a job for a plumber or electrician as a first step.

Sounds like you probably need both

Yep, but sparky first to hopefully make it safe.

Not sure why… Just turn the water mains off (while the family is out for the day), flush the toilet several times so it's empty, wait for it to dry out, then get the electrician in. Any cable correctly installed won't be affected by water even if it's laying in a puddle. (The insulation isn't supposed to be porous.) If the cable is porous, replace it. If the cable is fine and it's a connection getting wet instead - like water getting into a junction box, power point, or where two wires twist together into a connector - those should be pretty obvious to the eye - so again, remove any bare connections with a new one-piece run of cable, or remove the power point. And if water is s getting into a junction box - then chose who fixes what - either move the box, or fix the toilet leak.

Electrician, do you have a macerator? Or is your house connected to a stormwater tank?

Usually the power dims/shudders when I take a dump on the toilet.

What about when you do it somewhere else?

You should lay off the beans and chilis

… take a dump on the toilet

You should probably try taking your dump in the toilet, instead of on it

Sounds like a lot of crap to me

Is it common to have toilets connected to power? All the ones I know of simply open the cistern and let water out/in of the bowl… Or am I just sheltered?

On newer properties the toilet, outside tap and washing machine are connected to the rainwater tank and pump which senses a water pressure drop and activates the pump when you flush, if there is a fault in the circuit it will trip. Some toilet that don’t have sewer access have a macerator which pumps waste water up to a sewer, basement toilets etc. I’d do a visual check of the tank pump while power is off, like a damaged cord plug etc

      • Ah, thanks for the explanation!

Are your toilets connected to a rain water tank?
If so it could be the water pump.

    Do you have a watertank/sump/pump?

if not, you've got big issues.

    irrespective, you need an electrician

    • Thanks, I've turned off the power to the water tank, and that's stopped the issue till the electrician comes.

    Shaman

Op, if you can't find a shaman, try an electrician.

  • This sounds potentially incredibly dangerous. You need an electrician to identify where the problem lies. As soon as you can.

  • The water pump is faulty and tripping the power. I'd get a plumber out to replace it or possibly DIY if it plugs in.
