Here is a short-ish stay quick itinerary suggestion … fly into Lisbon then immediately from Lisbon take a train to Sintra for 3 nights then a train to Porto for 2 nights then back to Lisbon for 3 nights and fly out.

Portugal is well worth the trip. And compared to other western EU counties, value for money really makes a positive difference.

To top it off, Qatar are fine for an economy flight.

    • I like it although in summer I'd be tempted to make Sintra a day trip out of Lisbon and instead spend a couple nights located somewhere on the Algarve. A popular place for sure but there's no where like it if you can still snag accommodation.

      • Yeah I wouldn't be spending that long in Sintra. Day trip is fine.

        • Sintra has a lot to see and do. Don't know how you'd knock it over in a day trip. We did it the first time as a day trip from Lisbon then stayed 3 nights on another. Quinta De Regaleira and Pena Gardens (Inc Palace) alone take a solid day toghter (ideally split them up as Pena Gardens is substantial). Then you've got Capuchin Monastery etc. No way to do just those three places in 1 day. Each to their own.

          • @nonpop: Coming from an Oz winter some people are going to enjoy summer days exploring the most breathtaking coastline landscapes on the planet. Others will enjoy wandering the hallways of monasteries. As you say, each their own :)

I've done both, here's Cruz Alta at Sintra and Lagos on the Algarve.

its a great price to lisboa and shorter hours but a stop over would be great to rest. is a free stop over and hotel offered?

  • Ryanair and Wizz are big at Lisbon.

Can jump on a London flight for $30/$40

Why attack Canberra? It is an excellent travel destination, with a mixture of civic, cultural and natural sights. It is a terrific weekend destination.

          • @vetopower: its ok for a school kid. definitely wouldnt be top of my list to international visitors
