Best of the latest Lenovo offers I think - there is a link for the overall deal, but most laptops aren't really a good deal, this one is. If a mod wants they can add this specific info to the deal already posted, as it currently is it's hard to know which laptops are a good deal under the offer.

The coupon brings it to $656.10. That gives you a 2nd Generation i5 processor, 1GB mobility RADEON graphics seems like it's a RADEON 6630M which is very decent for this price. You get a well built laptop with Thinkpad quality, a seriously fast processor that clocks to 2.9Ghz in Turbo mode and an anti glare screen.

Agree with you.. but I reckon OZBargain users will neg you for that comment. I'll most likely get lots of negative votes for my comment. I am interested to see how many negative votes we will get.

It is rather interesting that this deal gets more positive votes than the original post.

Not sure why the duplicate rule is much more relaxed nowadays. How about I post a good 13 inch laptop deal and a good 14 inch laptop deal with the same discount code?

Tried to customise some 14 inch laptops in the Thinkpad Edge series.. but the screen cannot be changed… so probably not going to bother. Not a fan for 15 inch laptops - they are a bit too big/heavy for me.

Besides.. there are cheaper 15 inch laptops with i5 CPU - though Thinkpad is meant to be business laptops (better quality) - which is why I don't quite get Lenovo not offering option to upgrade the screen.

      • +1

I don't know why you seem to have an axe to grind. Anyway, here goes:

        • I don't see any cheaper laptops with a second generation sandy bridge i5.

        • I don't think anyone except dell lets you customize screens, at least in this price range

        • +1

This is about the discount code. It is the same one from the other post.

Re: second gen. i5 - you are making it sound like the 15 inch one is the only way to get cheap i5, where the 14 inch equivalent does not cost that much more. Furthermore, the 14 inch one is 6630M / integrated switchable. The 15 inch one, it just says 1GB - which means in theory IBM can put any 1GB card in there.

All I am trying to point out is… read the original deal, you can use the code on other laptops.

        • Reply to comment below since I think you can't nest any further.

I don't care what deal gets more votes or whatever, it's the fact that you keep posting misleading info which might lead to someone not making a good buying decision that is annoying.

The 14" version with i5 is much more expensive and has integrated graphics only, there doesn't seem to be a 14" with i5 AND 1GB graphics, not in this price range at least.

          Mate…
          1. I never indicate this is a "bad" deal. Stop making false statement.
          2. I only complain about Lenovo's limited upgrade options for the E series.

Think about it, I was playing around with the options - meaning I was interested… It is just I want more than a decent CPU in my next laptop. CPU is not the only thing I consider - that's all. I might check other Lenova series.

Since you want a Sandy Bridge / i5, you obviously know its stengths and the key changes, so it should be no suprise to you why I mentioned Blu-ray and 1080p.

Lastly, the code CAN be used for other Lenovo laptops - so just shop around. It does not hurt.

      • +1

One guy pointed out - it is possible to get an i7 for $890 (see comments below).

There is no real reason to single out 1 particular deal. Since the discount is on, the options would also be discounted - so if BD-Rom is offered, it could be around $48 after discount. Getting a better screen with the discount (if it is availabe) is also worth considering.

NOTE: People.. IF you really want one of these, I recommend the 2x2 Wireless N upgrade. I hope I am wrong BUT 1x1 means 1T1R Wireless N - which is basically Wireless N 150. A lot of people feel that you really shouldn't claim wireless N, unless you have AT LEAST 2T2R (2x2) - wireless 300. Even 2T2R is not THAT great (would rather 2T3R or better).

Wireless 300 (2x2) upgrade is worthwhile (in my opinion). That's one of the things I don't get about Lenovo about this E series. Thinkpad is business series and you offer 1T1R? Besides, my mate was able to get a Blu-Ray ROM with his R Series nearly two years ago - and R series is like the budget series. Again, this is about Lenovo, NOT about the deal or the discount code.

Basically, treat 1T1R kinda like Wireless G with a boost. The reason they are offered as default is no wireless chipset companies want to make G only chipset anymore. Selling 1T1R as wireless N is not something I feel is right BUT everyone does it - good marketing trick.

        • thx for the explanation - was wondering what 1x1 & 2x2 meant

  • I know that. Well you could have bothered to read what I posted at least to find out why I posted it. If there is any better deal around I would love to know about it!

    • -1

You indicated "seems like it's a RADEON 6630M", but the specs. in the PDF says - RADEON 5145. Thing is ATI RADEON 5145 is just a 512MB card.. so most likely not that. Where does it say RADEON 6630M?

Also, dunno why the it is not possible to upgrade to a blu-ray drive or the screen (other than changing the colour to red).

  • Thanks for the heads up. been looking for a cheap fast i5! (they didn't exist, until now!) :)

    • thank you so much! I just bought it!!! i can't wait for it to arrive!!!!!!!!

  • awesome. would def have gotten if i didnt get the xps 15 from the 30% off sale. 2nd gen i5 and anti-glare and so so cheap

    • -2

XPS 15 has a lot more customisation options: HD (1080p) LCD screen, Blu-ray combo (for $60 more), Quad Core i7. I reckon 15 inch 1080p LCD screen with Blu-ray would be pretty cool.

      • +2

        Geez..

The XPS 15 was $1300 with the special discount last week. That is TWICE the price of this laptop. This laptop is $656! You want to buy a 3 series BMW and want upgrade options to upgrade to a 7 series?? Just buy a 7 series in the first place, you'll have to pay double that's all..

        • -1

Geez… I am just trying to let the guy know that buying the XPS is not so bad.

XPS - $1300? You sure? $1300 - you get a Quad Core i7, 15 inch XPS this week (with 750GB/7200 rpm drive, 2GB graphics card). So in a week, Dell upgraded a dual core i5 into a quad core i7 with better graphics card for the same price? That seems hard to believe.

Personally, if I were to get a 2nd gen i5 with an ATI graphics card, I would prefer to have at least a Blu-ray drive in there (and hopefully also an 1080p LCD screen). A portable Blu-ray drive is only $60, but it is annoying to carry another Blu-ray USB drive.

One of the major selling points of an 2nd gen i5 is its super fast speed at decoding blu-ray / hi-def movies. That's the feature most review sites are raving about.

  • for $823 ($656 + $167) you also get 4 upgrade options on the basic i5 2410M config:
-Intel Core i5-2540M Processor (2.60GHz, 3MB L3, 1333MHz FSB) with Intel Turbo Boost Technology up to 3.3GHz
    -8 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
    -500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
    -9 Cell Li-Ion Battery

  • Great Deal

  • ooOOOOO I almost bought the Lenovo Z560 i5 2.4GHz (Turbo 2.66Ghz) from MNL online but then Centrecom had it cheaper so I was getting close but found this.
I'm very close to buying this one. This one's got blutooth as well.
Is Lenovo Z560 a first generation by the way?

  • Z560 is first generation, i5-450M since it says Turbo to 2.66Ghz

  • What is the weight?

    • I think its 2.56kg
      and supposedly get 3.5 - 4.5hrs (discrete/integrated) from the 6 cell battery.

      • Says 'starts at 2.4kg' I think the dedicated graphics would make it a bit heavier.

        • thats a "light slim laptop"? are you serious?

        • It's not a "light, slim" even though it's called edge. It's a low/mid level consumer laptop, 2.4kg isn't too bad really, 13" MBPs are 2kg.

  • Don't understand Lenovo's strategy. They sell Edge cheap here but T series and X series are expensive. It is the opposite in the US.

  • seriously fast processor that clocks to 2.9Ghz in Turbo mode

The i3 in my desktop is 3.3ghz.

Shouldn't the i5 which is a better model have a faster speed?

    • +3

Desktop CPU =/= laptop CPU. Laptop CPUs are smaller of course they are not as powerful as the Desktop CPUs.

    • Laptop processors have smaller die sizes and TDP, basically, they need to consume less power and generate less heat that needs to be dissipated in order to be able to squeeze them into a laptop with limited ventilation and space for fans and heatsinks for cooling. So they will usually run at lower frequencies.
Also, you can't compare frequencies across generations. A 2.4 Ghz sandy bridge i5 (where the 4 digit model number starts with 2 e.g. 2410M) will be faster than a 2.4Ghz first gen i5 (3 digit model number e.g. 450M).

  • Anyone know what the 2x2 network option is compared to 1x1 standard?

    • appears to be more/better antenni for the wifi. For $10, seems worth it.

  • How much does similar specs of laptops go for these days?
Are there any other brands with similar specs at this price?

    • HP Pavilion DV7 - i5 2.53Ghz (Lenovo's Processor is better)

17.3 Inch LED Screen (Better than Lenovo)

HP Media Centre Remote Control (Helps when you connect your PC with TV)

Blueray Drive (Lenovo - Extra $60)

HP Laptop's look is better than Lenovo's

Other specs are same - Price $769 (Pick Up)

      • Just wondering where I can find this HP at this price?

  • Great price based on the CPU and the presumably 6630M graphics. But having trouble convincing myself I don't care about USB 3.0 (if only eSATA had daisy-chaining). Only one of the USB ports being powered also seems a bit odd.

  • deleted

  • According to Lenovo specs they cripple their 2410m processors to not use turbo. You need to get at least a 2520m if you want turbo.

    • Are you sure it's not just a mistake, and can anyone check this with Lenovo, I don't see how they can cripple the turbo boost or why intel would let them.

Why would you get a quadcore.. and not have a dedicated graphics card? O_O

      • Intel HD Graphics is an onboard graphic on the CPU and beleive it is quicker, isn't it? no sure…..

        • No it's not, it's much much slower than tha ATI mobility solution.

      • It's an i7 dual core, not quad.

  • Got It MADMAY…….

    • On a par with you, at least. Chinese rubbish LMAO. So pretty much all you use or wear are disposals, more or less.

    • +2

haha…..though I am asian, but I prefer not to buy Chinese made stuff.
BUT trust me….90% of the stuff are made in china now.
there is no where to run and hide…they are all made in china.

just think it's IBM…IBM….IBM….IBM!!! Then it'll make u feel better!

And MrZ should have checked ur shirt, short, books, bags, couch, mobile, everything….probably the only thing not Made In China is your wife!!
BUT Trust me…with the massive population in China and the girls population there, IF YOU BEEN THERE, maybe your wife will likely be Made in China. (just go there for a holiday trip and u'll know)

      • Heh, my shirt is actually made in Mexico, and my TV made in England. But fair point.

        • +1

and my TV made in England

          What TV is that?

        • lol, I knew that would get questioned. It's a Sony. They used to build the PAL widescreen sets in England, because widescreen/digital was far more prevalent in UK and Europe than it was in the Asian region at the time (plus alot of Asia is NTSC I think). The picture tube is made in Japan, but the set itself is assembled in UK.

      • +1

why think IBM? IBM sold its laptop/PC division to Lenovo in 2005. The new machines no longer have the IBM logos on it either. =D

but put it this way … the giant Arks in 2012 were built in China too ;)

        • why think IBM?

          Psychological therapy.

Actually Lenovo have been making ThinkPad long before IBM sold the title rights to it. Yes, you old trusty ThinkPad is made by IBM, but inside a Lenovo factory and designed by an IBM engineer who is probably working for Lenovo now.

    • +2

Chinese have proven to be able to measure up to any required standard.
If they're asked to manufacture rubbish to meet a price point, so that big brand/reseller can make the margin they're targeting, then they can do that just as easily as manufacturing the highest technological and quality products one can imagine.

      • Well, the Chinese have yet to display the ability to produce the highest quality vehicles in the world. They don't come anywhere near the Japs or Koreans.

        • +4

… 'cause they're targeting a lower price point.
Watching a documentary on China today - noticed that government now uses locally made VWs.. Wait a while and you'll see China making VW for the world, and I bet they won't be any worse than German, Belgian or Mexican VWs, if indeed these other factories are still open by that time.
I'm not implying that Chinese are all geniuses and deserve all the credit to making their country the factory of the world - what makes China so attractive is mix of low wages, lack of political freedom and relaxed pollution control.

        • +1

VWs are hardly the best quality cars in the world to begin with. And of course a German-designed car built in China will be acceptable. What about an entirely Chinese design?

        • +1

What about an entirely Chinese design?

Like all foreign companies in China, VW is a joint effort. I don't know how much of Chinese VWs are German right now, but you can bet your bottom dollar the Chinese will absorb as much expertise as they need to eventually get rid of the Germans and make their own.

  • Just ordered one of these. Needed a laptop for the oldies. This is probably a bit overkill for their needs but seemed too good to pass up. Thanks OP

  • Chinese made things r OK. As long as they r designed elsewhere and the quality aassurances r met with standard. That's why all factories r moving to China. For cars I can only see the GRAET WALL which……I don't know wat to say. Cheap is prob the only reason I see them running on the road.

But trust me the Chinese r the best copy cat in the world. Just check out their replica iPhones.
