I've been in the market for a backpack which can handle everything I need for daily cycling commutes to and from work. I needed something which could hold my work clothes, shoes, 15" laptop, breakfast, lunch, water bottle and other items. It had to be suitable for all weather conditions. After doing my research, I decided on the Osprey Radial 34.

I have this bag and it is really great for commuting by bike. This is a good price too.

  • Would this be good for overseas travel as a carry-on and moving between hotels?

I'm guessing it's a bit cumbersome as a day bag?

    • I bought this as a bike bag, but I still prefer my Deuter Trans Alpine.

However, I have repurposed the Osprey as a travel bag, and for that it is very good.

The Osprey does feel significantly larger than the Deuter (34L vs 30L) but it is not as comfortable to carry.

I really like that the Osprey has an internal frame structure that allows it to stand on its own.

Technically, at 54H x 33W x 34D (cm) it is a bit wide for carry on (which should be more like 56H x 36W x 23D (cm)) but I have not had any issues to date.

Thanks for the review DirtySteve. Nice username lol.

I really enjoy OzBargain, not just for the bargains, but for the reviews from members.

  • I'm trying to decide between the talon 22 and escapist 25 for a all rounder day hiker backpack for a family of 3.

I've got an old Deuter Race EXP which I use as a cycling commuter pack and day hike pack (worked for 2 people), however I need something larger to fit kids stuff.

    Any experience out there?

    • I have the Talon 22 but I don't really like it much. Therefore I don't use it very much. Basically, it is one big sack, and I would prefer several smaller pockets.

I would recommend you look at the Deuter Trans Alpine. It is 30L but it feels very streamlined and it is incredibly comfortable. 10kg feels like 5kg on your back.

There is a new Osprey Syncro in 20L size which may be suitable, also.

      • sychro looks pretty good for ventilation.
