I was about to buy this game the other day, perfect timing.
I got this game a while back in a humble bundle with I think age of wonders 2, magicka 2, Europa something 4.
So, what's it like?
Interesting I guess. Nice graphics and seems pretty unique. If I had to describe it I guess it’s a strategy hexagon grid turn based tactical RPG game?
So like a fantasy RPG version of Civilization?

Yep pretty good as a turn based strategy. Like a mix between Civilization and the Total War series in a fantasy setting. I enjoyed it.

Is this like Age of Empires?
Possibly, but also possibly not - mentions it’s a turn based strategy. I’ve never played a turned based strategy (only RTS) so cannot comment on what the gameplay is like.
I’m in the same boat of not playing many strategy games so I could be wrong with terminology but my best comparison would be that AoE is a RTS game while Age of Wonders is a 4X game.
Same genre and war focused but definitely not the same

It's a fantasy 4X, and the best of the lot. But not as good as AoW2.

So I've never used steam before. I've created an account and activated the product key. What do I do now in order to play the game?
once you activate a product in steam. it should appear on the left bar in your library page for you to download and launch
Once you have the client installed just click on 'Library'. All your games will show up there.

Already own it and all its expansions, but strangely it allows me to redeem the key still. Normally it will say you already own the game.
Perhaps your copy came from a bundle and it is associated with the ID for that bundle? I think I had the same with one of the Goocublets games.
