  • Battery vs wired. What’re everyone’s thoughts on the way to go?

    • Personally went wired but we were getting electrical works done at the time already. Went wired as some time ago I recall reading that the night light was a bit brighter over power. That and there’s less need to deal with batteries even if their lifespans solid.

If I didn’t have an electrician coming through already perhaps I’d just go battery to make it a self install.

Just note that Google killed the Nest API if you want to do anything outside of using the stock app for these.

    • "Moving forward, we will shut down the Works with Nest developer program on August 31, 2019, and focus on delivering a single consumer and developer experience through the Works with Google Assistant program."
Thus, appears API access is just shifting to the Google Assistant API.

      • +1

It appears that only a very small subset of functionality is available through the Google APIs.

I would avoid buying anything Nest branded (and offload all existing Nest devices ASAP, if any) for more advanced IoT setups.

        • I have to agree, sad.

    • They will still work with hue and lifx bulbs

  • Bloody Google. Hope they don't kill IFTTT support

    • +1

Though Google is promising improved security and privacy with this change, this will also end up breaking some existing third-party integrations. And, one of them is IFTTT (If This, Then That)

They certainly are from the looks of it.

      • Man. And here comes the email from them directly:

On August 31, 2019, Nest will be retiring its Works with Nest program. In turn, Nest services on IFTTT will no longer work due to this change.
        The services impacted are:
        • Nest Thermostat
        • Nest Protect
        • Nest Cam
Your Nest Applets will remain active until the end of August, when they will then be turned off and removed. We will send another reminder before Nest Applets are turned off permanently.
For more information, please see Nest's FAQ.
At IFTTT, we believe every thing works better together. We look forward to working with Google and others to help consumers benefit from and control their data.
        Thank you for your understanding.

      • Now I am waiting on the email from Philips to say Hue integration will also break. So stupid. All that investment and they take away the features that make it an appealing product. Now it's just an overpriced detector with an app. BFW.

        • +1

Philips will still be supported as they follow secure connections that Google will support with working with Google assistant

          • @asa79: oh good - the flashing red lights may seem like a gimmick but it give the people in the house some attention and urgency.

            Thanks for the update.

            • @singingwolf: This is one of the features that I like about it

    • Too late

    • Curious to know what advantages IFTTT provides for these.

      • +1

I have set up a whole lot of applets that do things like notify other family members via SMS and email of alerts, notify me of low battery, flash lights under certain conditions. When you are not home, the more people you notify the quicker you can respond.

IFTTT gives you the power to do a lot more., You could send a tweet or post a Facebook message, trigger a camera etc etc.

  • What other alternatives are there that aren't tied to Google or Amazon?

    • I found a workaround rather than alternative.

Roost make 9V smart batteries. They work based on the sound of a smoke alarm. So I ordered one and will put it near a Nest so I still get to use all the IFTTT applets:

  • So i have purchased two of these units.. how will this affect me as i was also looking at purchasing the doorbell?
