    sigh
I remember the good old days when you could read Aussie papers here

    • +10

Using it “outside of australia” gets you additional titles including Aussie papers ;)

  • +1

    Sweet deal, thanks nocure

  • +2

Awesome! Any easy way to browse these on iPad? the missus would love to have all those food magazines. Actually I would love not to have hundreds of physical magazines hoarded.

    • +2

PressReader app does the trick. Join your local libray and get free access. A few other apps get the same magazines and others. Check out your libraries web page for details of what else can be had .

  • +5

This is awesome thanks a lot. My subscription to Love Patchwork & Quilting was coming up for renewal, so this will save me a bit of money.

  • +9

    Also worth a look: https://www.rbdigital.com/

Lots of Aussie libraries offering magazines and comic books.

  • +2

this is rather awesome thanks mate

  • Will this work with a Kindle?

    • +2

      or a kobo?

      • No neither one

  • +1

Thank you so much OP. This is awesome :-)

  • +4

Great deal but seriously that UI is terrible. Makes reading very difficult.

  • +2

Wish they have the Financial Review or any good finance/economics papers

    • +4

Easy. Disable Javacript on their website and read away.

      • +2

Easy. Disable Javacript on their website and read away.

had to use google to find out how
        disabled Javascript
        now get a blank screen

Not advanced computer literate, so assuming that you were joking?

        • +3

Not joking. Disable Javascipt in the browser settings and you can read any article on the AFR website. Works for me using Safari, Chome, or Firefox.

          • @rickb: Oh ok
I thought you were talking about pressdisplay website :)

            • @docians: Ah sorry. I should have been more specific.

        • +1

You can also just hit Esc on your keyboard the instant the page has loaded.

          • @ak47wong: Any way of doing that on android

            • @Xiaomate: Tap the stop icon. AFR just displays an overlay on the content to stop you from reading it if you're not a subscriber, but it's loaded after the content. So you just need to stop the page loading after the content is loaded but before the overlay is.

Australian newspapers are limited in number due to News Corp <— that's a good thing

    • +3

Avoiding all mainstream news media is a good thing.

People far smarter than us (well, OK, me) have been pointing this out for decades eg Manufacturing Consent Noam Chomsky.

      • +2

oh i agree.. I posted a video recently where Chomsky brilliantly describes how the corporate elites sway elections using fear, tribalism and demagoguery. The Murdoch media empire is the main propaganda vehicle and then you have various Koch funded think-tanks and super-pacs who throw money at independent right winged pundits.

  • +1

nice, but how to view the magazine pages in full screen?? the interface is not great.

Any library has digital herald sun?

    • +16

That comment alone deserves a permanent lifetime ban from this site……

    • +4

Quilton toilet paper is usually on sale on Amazon mate. Much better quality - even when it comes to reading as well.

  • +1

Thanks! Works great - note to other "newbies" and technically challenged - add the 8 numbers (or library card #) in Barcode.

  • Can this only be accessed by PC browsers? I'm on my phone and all that seems to be available are newspaper publications.
I'm interested in accessing full magazines eg. National geographic, cosmos.

    • answered my own question, Yes.

      • At worst you could select to view the desktop version. Firefox does that, but not sure about others…

  • Pretty good.
The website seems confusing for a first time user

  • How do I get access? Do I need to sign up first? Thanks

    • +1

If your library provides access to PressReader, all you have to do is use your online library account to login

    • Just put your library card # (or any 8 digits in the Barcode field)

  • +1

    Amazing!! Thank you!

As mentioned above, disabling javascript works on some paywalled sites. I have a simple Firefox plugin called YesScript that lets me Blacklist javascript on a site with a simple button click. Enabling Private Browsing works for some sites (File> New private Window in FireFox). Setting the User Agent to GoogleBot works for some sites (User Agent Switcher extension in FireFox does this).

The best all in one solution is the FireFox anti-paywall extension here: https://github.com/nextgens/anti-paywall/releases

  • Call me an idiot, but I really cannot figure it out to use the website with PressReader. Do I download the PressReader as an app on my phone, then login with my library details? My library is Ringwood Vic.

  • +3

So I think I worked this out.

Download pressreader on iPad (or whatever).

Then go to login, and select “library” below when you put your details in.

When it asks for your library, type in Warwickshire, and pick that one (was the second of two options for me).

Then put in any of the afformentioned barcodes, and voila!

    • Good job dude

  • I am having an issue with the magazines. Example, I choose APC then get the front cover I try the next page arrow or even on of the page thumbnails and it just brings me back to the PressReader homepage. I am using Firefox 66.0.5 64bit and have enabled Flash for the site and have diabled ABP. Anyone else having this issue?

  • Thanks so much OP. I didn't know this existed.

My local library isn't listed, and all Australian libraries I tried wanted a barcode and pin and mine didn't work, so I copied ptrg above and used Warwickshire. Your 4 listed barcodes are all "in use", but a little playing found one that wasn't.

My worry is - what about the poor subscriber whose number I have used. If they subsequently try to use their perfectly legal library number, what happens ??? doesn anybody know ???

    • Poor old tiger is in strife (first code listed)

  • Where can you get The Herald Sun Vic?

    • +3

      Werribee treatment plant.

  • Anyone else having problems viewing this website in Chrome? Comes up as a blank page for me. Works perfectly in IE. Not sure why?

  • +1

Thanks for a great link nocure. @menace208- I'm on chrome, no problems here. I'm using the 41111111 barcode only, no email address or password, going straight thru'.

  • +3

Please consider using your own personal library card number when using this. It's free to get one via your local library (most) and only takes a few mins - for many you can do it online. In this way libraries (and in turn this service) continue to get funding to run as they see the user numbers. Otherwise councils look at the reduced number of users (don't realise people are using fake/published numbers for services like this) and cut the budget to them and we all suffer in due course.

  • Is it just me or are Australian main newspapers now not available through Pressreader using a VPN ?

  • +2

For those who want a more 'personal login' you can apply for a library card from the National Library of Australia.
This is FREE (see full terms & conditions when applying).

    1) https://www.nla.gov.au/getalibrarycard/
    2) After you fill in your personal details, you will get your card in the mail and can then access PressReader from the nla.gov.au site
    3) https://www.nla.gov.au/app/eresources/item/4307

This is the most legitimate way of accessing PressReader and ensures libraries like the NLA can continue to provide this free service.

  • Just checked Libraries SA for the best way to (legitimately) log in and found the following:

    https://www.pirie.sa.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/Shared%2…

In a nutshell: "Cancellation of Shared Subscriptions PressDisplay and WorldBook Online"

    • this link is now dead unfortunately

  • No longer working without logging in, unfortunately

    Invalid barcode/library card number

  • Same as above "Invalid barcode/library card number" - workarounds welcomed

  • Press reader now only shows the front page when using library card number, is there any way to view the whole paper without paying $$$ ..

  • Anyone got any way to get in now?

    • +1

I used to be able to log in a couple of months ago, all of sudden it says my library card number is invalid
