  • Fairly older specs now though, CPU 2 gens behind and the GPU 1 gen behind, but would still perform well @ 1080p

Yeah, agree. I just got an MSI with 9750H and 2060 (16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 120Hz) for $2000. I think this older gen stuff should be heavily discounted now to move on stock.

      • May I ask your own opinion about quality of MSI laptops? Can they last 3-5 years?

        • +1

Only had it a week. Seems strong, sturdy build, good hinges. Nice keys and display, but still getting use to the traction pad and mouse keys which seem to lack a responsiveness. Has a plastic build which is fine, pretty good size and weight considering it's power. Picks up lots of fingerprints, which is annoying but I guess they fade or rub off simply enough. Thermals are probably as you'd expect in a half decent gaming laptop, but I think fans are strong and responsive.

          • @muwu: Thanks mate, for your detailed review :)

      • Could you please provide an link that seems like a good deal, or is it already expired :(

      • where?

      • You sure it wasnt 8750?

      • That seems like a great deal, in comparison to this one, where did you get that laptop at that price?

It was part of the 20% Computer Alliance eBay deal last week. I tried posting it but quantity was only 5. They had sold out later on the first day.

          Yep, definitely 9750H, with 2060, 1TB SSD (via PCI-E), dual lane 8GB x2, 120Hz. For $2000

          Here's my new machine:

          • @muwu: I think that is a great price to specs you got, and powerful enough that it should last you many years for gaming. I have envious eyes.

      • I agree that 1060 and 7700hq are very much outdated right now, this should cost much less.

I will be honest, I am not a fan of MSI. I haven't seen a single model that didn't have some strange design decisions or inadequate quality build. I haven't touched MSI for 2 years, though. what do you think about your model?

        • This is my first gaming laptop.

I think time will ultimately tell.

I'll still pretty excited about it. I love the power. I love the speed and booting/loading times. I love the keys. I love the display.

The chassis and the trackpad are the two things in particular that haven't impressed. I'm also getting CPU temps up to 90 and GPU temps up to 70, which I'm guessing I should expect when you fit in these sort of components into a small form factor (I know the natural shortcomings of gaming laptops; I just hope degradation isn't too quick, I want some longevity out of it.

I decided it was either MSI or Asus, since they have the biggest marketshare and generally good reputations (every brand has it's critics). I think I'll be happy with this a year or two down the track, just a question of how it holds up.

          • @muwu: good luck with the purchase!

bulky at 2.6kg. short battery life (not-so-power-efficient).
but great screen (91% sRGB and 120hz). photo and video editors rejoice. (except for picky 4k video editors)

anyway, too bulky and power inefficient to my liking.
