    Jaycar…. No way !!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Jazz 2 years ago
I've been Gary's borther for six years and I really dislike the guy.

-ve vote for ripping off other people's hard work for your own profit…

This issue has been raised so many times, years after it occurred. People love putting the boot into Jaycar, but strangely ignore more serious abuses by big businesses!

See my comments last deal about this regrettable issue from years ago.

Change.org petition called for that product to be withdrawn - Jaycar withdrew it 2 years ago

Unfortunately, producing a product made of off the shelf components, mainly just designing a box & compiling a manual - is difficult to protect from copying! (Would possibly be protected by copywrite, but would involve an expensive court case with no guarantee of success. It would be difficult to prove it was original as many online tutorials & videos exist covering the same areas.)

It is unwise to go into business without getting advice about IP, risks, & how to avoid your work being copied by others. In business, if you don't protect your own product, don't expect others to do it for you!

With so many issues with other businesses not paying staff correct wages, billing the dead, forcing small businesses out of business through copies of their product or underpricing their product, etc - why single out Jaycar years after the event??

And given the number of Ozbargainers waiting for businesses to make an error so they can benefit - it's a bit hypocritical to complain when a business does it to provide a product at a lower price to consumers (for that business's benefit)… Both can have dire financial consequences for small businesses.

why single out Jaycar years after the event??

have they admitted fault and compensated the guy who developed the kit?

have a look at the steps they went through to copy the guy's manual.

If you want to support a business that does this, that's your choice.

I've known about this case for years.

But if people don't get advice, protect themselves & understand the consequences…

In our legal system, it is the responsibility of the IP owner to take action against infringements, not the other way round. It's not nice out there jv.

It's an instructive case for all entering business based on their own ideas & design.

The product was a good idea, not a business.

@INFIDEL: So you think Jaycar did the right thing by stealing his work?

            • @jv: Do you protest shopback because they set up an almost identical business to cash rewards?

            • +1

@jv: That's not a legal or business question, but a moral / ethical one. The primary role of a business excludes such thought, concentrating on the financial return to owners / shareholders. Feel free to campaign to change that, as I don't like it.

And by definition what is reported is not considered stealing! It's a civil matter. But it's not nice!

So what you are asking is up to individuals to make that choice, Cardinal jv.

But, do you ask yourself that question when you consider products made by poorly paid workers, shop at stores caught out underpaying & exploiting their workers, designers who appropriate other cultures IP to boost sales & price of their own trendy clothes, tech that "borrowed" their developments from the ideas of others, the knock off look alike packaging by major supermarkets - ripping off so many small businesses… If not, why not??

But that choice needs to be informed by the facts. Leaving out the fact this is a case that was resolved (no further action taken) by withdrawal of the product by Jaycar 2 years ago, rather than a current problem - may mislead! And I know how hard you are in those who mislead😉

If the originator of the idea decides not to protect it (or in this case, may be unprotectable as it draws on the work of others in writing the manual) - it becomes open to those who want to benefit from it…
People have been copying others ideas for millennia. It's vitally important for our development👍

I've had my own designs copied, so changed how I made money from them - running courses etc, and released other designs free for anyone to copy. As I commented last deal

As I commented above, some Ozbargainers prey on businesses (to provide product for their own business or personal benefit)… Which has consequences for businesses.
              Where's the similar moral outcry??

(I complained as Ozbargainers placed large orders for a ridiculously underpriced product from a tiny WA family owned hardware store. People saw they were a legitimate target & should have protected themselves, so saw no wrong in what they did. I was criticised. It cost the small business dearly - manually cancelling & refunding the large number of orders.
There is a moral equivalence between what some Ozbargainers think is their right, & what some businesses do…)

              • @INFIDEL:

That's not a legal or business question, but a moral / ethical one.

Thus my -ve vote as per the voting rules.

                • @jv: I answered your question of whether Jaycar was right for "stealing" - which is not what they did.

You're just 2+ years late to this issue. You've expressed your opinion & seem to have taken revenge through your vote.

But the issue does not relate to this deal. So it's a very dubious neg.

                  • @INFIDEL:

But the issue does not relate to this deal.

You can vote -ve for the store, not just the deal… Read the voting rules.

                    • @jv: Oh I know those. But how many years can people claim that defence for their negs? It's now been years.
You have not shown any link to this deal. It's like a feud.

                      • @INFIDEL:

But how many years can people claim that defence for their negs?

That would be a personal preference.

                        • @jv: By personal preference - you mean the Mods preference…

                          • @INFIDEL: No, the voter's preference.

Very misleading to compare the price of refurbished items to new ones.

    • Very misleading

Not only misleading, but illegal according to Australian Consumer Law.

      • Negging because this refurb comparison, and because jv has used up their neg already for another reason why this is dodgy AF.

  • What kind of discount would you be doing on the Brass Monkey fridge/freezer (36L & 50L)?

    • -1

Here's what's out there right now - Brass Monkey.
      Note: stock is limited.

      • Thanks, but they're the same prices as listed on your website. Is it 70% off the pricing on your photo or is there no discount on these items?
