Ooh nice! Just got my first iPad and am looking for an Australian paper to subscribe to. Cheers.

  • What's the AGE? Never heard of it.
-Edited: Melbourne version of Sydney Morning Herald.

      Melbourne version of the SMH.

      • +9

I thought the SMH was the Sydney version of The Age ;)

        • +8

SMH pre-dates The Age by 20 years so I'm afraid not ;)

        • +2

Logic doesn't work in Victoria - so dont try.

    • C'mon man… If you don't know what The Age is, newspapers probably aren't for you.

  • They're making it very tough for me to keep resisting getting an iPad.

    • Don't. They're awesome. Get TIOD and you have full access to all your SAMBA shares too.

get the cheapest ipad u can find, its still ahead of honeycomb in terms of development.

google still being a bi*ch for not letting android 3.1 into open source for the community to improve it.

Wow. Mind blown. That's about the most objective comment about iPad vs Honeycomb tablets I've read thus far. It's like every word was carefully chosen. Well done, sir. It's like you've satisfied both Apple and Android fans without pissing either one off. In so few words, you've summarised why the general public is better off getting an iPad (FOR NOW) by explaining the geek side of why the Android Honeycomb tablets are not exploding in market share like Android phones are.

I'm stealing your comment and using it everywhere else on the Internet. I'm still holding out for the first Kal-El powered Android tablet (by which time Android tablet market will start progressing at a more rapid pace) but that was an awesome comment.

if they included an ipad, it would be a good deal…

    • +3

see how you got negs, thats because no one wants an ipad, even with a free ipad it would still be no deal!!!!

      j/king apple fan boi's!

      • +3

yep… looks like not many people here want a free ipad… :)

        • +3

actually the jokes on asher moses the smh/age computer writer who is soooo anti i anything. Must be boiling…

        • No one like fanatics. They couldn't pay me to peddle their brainwash others with their mindless religion.

    THIS IS A GREAT BARGAIN.

Personally I think this is the best Ozzie newspaper app there is … indeed one of the best in the world. Why? because you get the whole paper … every word … no more, no less.

MUCH better than the endless and boring propaganda put out by Limited News - let's face it, anything is!

The app doesn't appeal to people who want "more" than the hard copy version … but in my experience more bells and whistles usually hides less content.

lol as if Fairfax doesn't have it's own agenda and propaganda… Obviously their political views are similar to yours…

      • must be ;)

  • Will this only be for ipad owners who have active Telstra sims in their iPads? or for all of us?

    • +2

from reading the article, it appears it will be a special version of the app, so i would say it will be available to everyone…

      • correct, boss just confirmed it works on Optus…

  • My rave about the app above was for the first/pdf version (which I happened to like).

We are about to get version 2.

  • what does this have to do with The Beatles?

    • -1

There was a story about them in the Fairfax press a few years back…

  • Good on yer SMH!

  • +1

    really awesome. Thanks.

BTW, you can get access to PressDisplay (posted way back) through the state library website and you can read them on your iPhone/iPad via the web browser. Not the Displaystand app though because that requires a direct subscription.

edit: oh… just realised it starts tomorrow. was wondering why it said 7 day trial.

Question: If someone forgets about the App and doesn't cancel the subscription by December, will they be charged automatically thereafter? Caveat emptor.

    • How could they charge you, it's a free app…

      • A free app that is normally subscription based.

      • The App may be free but the subscription might not be. Well, I've never joined any subscriptions through the App store so I can't say for sure. That's why I didn't make a statement, but asked a question instead.

        • I would say no.
However, I can't say 100% until I actually have the app.

        • Have downloaded app, used old fairfax login which has no financial details, so its an opt-in (pay-in) model. No auto charge

        • The new doesn't require you to login….well at least not initially……to get free access.

not negging deal, but paying $9 a month for a digital news subscription after freebie ends? fail

why pay for news information you can get for free online?

good on ya murdock…. i guess you have to figure out a way to buffer the loses in circulation of print media.

    • Fair comment, but you can enjoy the new app for 6 months for free. AND for the drolls, they say there is a version due in 3 months time.

Dont understand the murdoch comment. Fairfax is not one of his papers yet.

BTW murdochs online version offerings do not have all the content that is in the digital version. Not that I would pay for it either. BUt at least 6 months gives you an idea if the Fairfax model is worth paying for your news.

They are saying they will be providing those with a paper sub, a cheaper subscription rate. As I have a brother who has the paper delivered, I currently get access to their current App free using his unused online access, although he is looking at an iPad, so that might be history….

  • I just got an email confirm that my TheAge app will be free for 7 days. Is this the same app as advertised here?

    • no that's the old one, the one above will go live tomorrow.

      • Oh,so I was supposed to actually READ the opening post… cheers.

        • updated link to itunes store now app is available

  • The online versions of Australian broadsheets have degraded below "National Enquirer". I only read The New York Times now.

    • +1

The paper they call "Hell's Bible"? Good work.

  • i downloaded the age but then since im in NSW i think SMH suits me better.
    well, both are similar, right?

  • Gotta say, not that impressed with the new version. Can it be pre-loaded like the old one? With the old one, I turn on my ipad at home, dl today's paper and go to work. No need for internet to access the paper. this one seems to need constant connectivity. :/

    • thats why its sponsored by telstra.

      • So I need to pay for 3G, will need to pay (in 6 months) for the App AND I'll get adds every few slides of the page. Sounds like a win win win….for someone else.

        Aarrrggghhh, I'm a whinging Ozbargainer….noooo!!!

        • lol, it was a joke btw… but would be a good reason why telstra would sponsor something like this… to get data rates up! (though it does work for optus sims too)
